Nigel the last two letters in the designation (-DO) indicate which factory constructed the plane. (DO) would be the main Douglas factory in California (Santa Monica?) (DT was the Douglas factory in Tulsa). As in Britain various manufacturers made other company's aircraft under licence. All the American factories were assigned different two letter codes.

Glad to see you back and firing on all cylinders Nigel! Sorry to hear about Jess. I just got two of these kits delivered last week which has rekindled my researching. A couple of points that might be of interest for Boston IV versions: I read that the RAF IVs didn't have the forward firing 50cals. While I can't find any good reference shots for the RAF, I did find some 342 Loraine Sqdr pics that show the gun ports covered - and pretty permanently, not just taped over for flight. As a sister squadron to RAF's 88 sqdr, my bet is that they'd been the same. The evidence for Mk XIV bombsight is growing too - so I'm glad I saved mine from the BM Lanc build. Are you still planning to build a 'J'?

Dear Nigel, Another review of a good looking kit from HK. I remarked elsewhere on formation lights as I gather they were fairly standard on US aircraft of the era. Good work sir!! Regards, Z

Unfortunately not in the video. jeje Good to know that Jess is doing well. Another great model. WIth al the beautiful kits i don't know what to buy. Hi Nigel, with regard to the engines, both the G and J models had the -23 variants, the H and K the -29, with about 100 extra HP. The exhaust stacks are the clayton s type (also seen on the B-25) and seem to have been introduced from the G-35 (i think) and all Js, Hs and Ks,for better flame damping. Nerd out burst over! 😂 great video, though. I'm really looking forward to seeing your build of this one!
@NigelsModellingBench
@NigelsModellingBench 5 ай бұрын
I have been looking into this tonight and have read that the exhaust arrangements were shared between G,J,K,H so there could be any set up on any airframe? I cannot find anything that links the 23/29 to the different exhaust layout?
@user-vk3tk4oy6h
@user-vk3tk4oy6h 5 ай бұрын
@@NigelsModellingBench I think you're right on that. Certainly the aircraft with the -23s in them carried both types of exhaust, not so the ones with the -29s, as far as I've seen, but i dont think that was engine related. Apparently the -29 was put in the Hs and Ks as Wright had discontinued the -23 production, but Douglas went on building A-20s!

In part 21 of the G build you will see me have a proper rant about the Wolf book on the A-20. I am looking into different recognition and identification light packages. The book goes into detailed explanations about the style of wiring used, fuse supply by different block numbers and so on, then just says at block xx the lights were changed to AAF style? It also says that at block XX the lights were changed from A8 to A9 type???? What the hell does all this mean?? They also go on to say that the exhaust types are random across different models.... Great!! Wingleader books are much better than that waste of money.

The lights under the rear fuselage are not formation lights. They are coloured identity lights. (Red, Amber, and Green I think). They were used to flash a morse letter/colour combination to antiaircraft guns/friendly ships etc (colour/code of the day). Somewhere in the cockpit there was a control box to select which lamp(s) to use and a key to tap out the morse letter. They were used in the same way as an Aldis lamp or the various colour flares combinations fired from a Verey pistol.
@NigelsModellingBench
@NigelsModellingBench 6 ай бұрын
Thank you. I'm not sure many of the US planes had them at all?
@rileyk99
@rileyk99 6 ай бұрын
First I've heard of them being used for Morse, I always figured it would be a "code of the day" type of thing for nighttime ops. The lights in the tail of the B-17 were to signal bomb release to trailing aircraft.

At last! Great review as ever Nigel - my order's in. As for dates, the Wingleader book is slightly out. Although the Boston IVs weren't flown 'en mass' until mid June 44 as they say, the first Boston IV (BZ449) actually flew its first op with 88 Squadron on May 1st - a raid on marshalling yards at Hirson. I also remember my father telling me that the new IVs were flown into Hartford Bridge throughout May and all were parked up on the far side of the airfield. When he asked why they weren't flying them he was told they were being held back as replacements for after D Day, from which they didn't expect too many of the IIIa s to return from. A comment he didn't find too encouraging! So what stripes the 400 series of IVs had is a bit of a mystery I think. BZ449 flew again on 5th May but not again until 12th June when BZ412 was also introduced - a plane which my Dad went on to fly later in that month. I imagine that these May flights were more tests than anything else. So, what stripes the rest of 400 series of IVs had is a bit of a mystery I think. The first of the 500 series flew on 1st Jan 45, with BX515 (as in the HK kit) flying its first op on 2nd. so I think its pretty certain that they all flew with the post October 44 recognition markings. Sorry for the nerdy ramble!
@markfranks1329
@markfranks1329 5 ай бұрын
Not nerdy in the slightest. Fascinating, in fact. Thank you for sharing. My Father too was a pilot in WW II and it's always interesting to hear from those whose circumstances were similar. Nothing to do with A-20s/Bostons, I know, but in the time frame you describe, Dad was the far side of world in Australia, flying across the Timor Sea, shooting up Japanese fuel dumps and strafing parked aircraft. These World Wars, eh, it was all go, wasn't it? 👍

Nigel, just a thought: With all these detailed interiors included in the 1/32 Lancaster, B17 and A-20 kits for example, it would be neat to see someone get out the razor saw and build a kit with the appropriate side panel material removed for an open display of the interior from the nose to the rear. I just think it's a waste to always cover up all that detail. Some thought would have to given to equipment lost from the removed panels. I think one opened aircraft model would be a nice addition to one's collection. Great review!
@Model_ig_uk
@Model_ig_uk 6 ай бұрын
It's 2024 not 1984 😅 all of our hard work in interiors can be seen forevermore on our socials, usually much more than the actual build itself. Personally I don't understand going to extreme measures detail wise to hit high accuracy levels only to cut out panels which destroys the illusion of reality. 1:13:09

Fair review, Nige of what is essentially 95% A-20G. (I seem to recall, AMT doing something similar with their '48, 90s offerings.) This does look a nice product, no doubt, but has your mate at HKM made you privy to any future releases from them? It seems at the moment it's just Lancs, B-17s and Havocs. It'd be nice if you could herald a Halifax, Wellington, Hampden or Whitley. Imagine a '32nd Manchester? A Liberator, Marauder also from HKM. Wonderful. All easier said than done, I know, but one can only have that many Lancs and B-17s, surely?

@@NigelsModellingBench Thanks for the response, Nige. I came across your review of Hobby Boss' 1/32 B-24J from about 5 years ago. I was left with the impression you really liked the kit but it had its issues, namely the props and perspex representations of the fore and aft turrets, to name a few. A search on the site of our mates in Lowestoft show lots of a.m. now available but still no solution for the turrets. Is this the reason there's been no build of this kit? A build video from you on this a/c would be really good. Tell your mate at HKM a big Lib's long overdue from them. 😉👍

Your reviews are among the best out there, but at the same time somewhat disconcerting in terms of price. The basic A20 kit is £240 (Hannants) and all the extras you refer to must add between £50 and £100, which is frightening rather than disconcerting! Unfortunately such sums put these models out of my reach. However I shall continue to watch and enjoy your reviews and builds.

Its actually £216 at the moment on pre order at Hannants and will be cheaper else where eventually. As I said a few times in the video, it will build beautifully OOB, BUT, I am just letting you know there are options out there.
