IF I was ever in the position to do so, this is the yacht I would hire for a week. IF I was ever in a serious position to purchase, this is the yacht I would want to buy, the Captain, Chief Engineer and the Chief Stew as integral parts of any deal. Love this Captain given he treats the yacht as if it's his own. AWOL owner is well-served. Good luck with the sale.

The term "anchor watch" always reminds me of a daytime standing watch while on a single stern tie on the leeward side of an unmanned oil platform in the Gulf of Mexico, approx 10 miles south of Galveston TX. I was operating a 135 ft crew boat in the oil fields. We rarely anchored. We had time to kill waiting for orders. The rest of the 5 crew were down below in the galley. Scanning the horizon on the windward side of the platform I saw a ridge of water. I first thought a large vessel had passed. There was no white water. It stretched horizon to horizon. It was advancing quite quickly. It dawned on me there must have been an earthquake in the Gulf. This was a mini tsunami advancing. I alert the crew below, just before a 3-4 ft tsunami rolled under the platform. Of course it passed under the stern and then the bow. The boat pitched wildly twice. I stared at the line, expecting the shock load to part the line or rip a cleat out. No damage except a shaken crew. There had been an under sea earthquake aprox 150 miles away off the coast of Florida.

I part-time work on a sailing charter yacht as a technician/engineer and although we don't have that many systems running on anchor there are similarities. Question do you have guests on board that are interested in the how to off the vessel? Personally I would be all over the engineer, picking his brain about the how and why about the yacht.

You are a Pro. In USA 34 people died on the dive boat Conception when it caught fire off the coast of Santa Cruz. All paying passengers died as they were sleeping. They could not escape because of one small exit to upper deck blocked by fire. The paying customers were all sleeping below deck in a large galley of sleeping bunks when a fire broke out. They could not get out and all parishes. None of the crew was on watch as they should have been. The crew above deck survived.

The difference from my times in sailing one generation or more before the present time is this: in my times it was a pleasure, today it is an incubus and we did not relay on electronics (prone to failure) but simply on the old art of navigation and watch keeping with your eyes, senses.

Then outside pireus in greece we didnt manage to hive the anchor because the depth was 90 meter and the hydraulic motor was in bad shape . We had to use the capstan to get it up .

enjoy your videos, very informative. Question? what is the training needed for a captain to move up in size from say the size you work on to one of say 350 feet, obviously there are docking constraints as not all ports can accommodate super large vessels and the maneuverable ability of the super size boat has different constraints . The responsibility for such a huge vessel seems daunting. Do you have a video on this where this is mentioned?

I just realized smaller craft tend to use snubbers on the chain; large craft do not. Also do you have a chain stopper or is the windlass used to secure.
@JCrook1028
@JCrook1028 3 жыл бұрын
smaller craft generally don't have a way to lock the drums on the windlass like a large yacht does. That takes the strain off the gears, same as a snubber does for a small craft.

Do you always have channel 16 on standby even when docked or is there sometimes as reason to have the local port channel on standby instead?
@ryano.5149
@ryano.5149 3 жыл бұрын
Channel 16 is always monitored, as it is the international distress frequency, as well as used for "hailing," that is, establishing communication between two entities before switching to a working channel. In the U.S, if a vessel has more than one VHF as most commercial vessels typically do, they may also monitor channel 13, as channel 13 is set aside for bridge-to-bridge communication between vessels. Depending on the area, there are other channels a vessel may want to monitor as well. Aside from channel 16, what else is monitored can vary.

Never worked aboard a vessel but I loved night flying and night shifts as a security guard. The world is yours and there is usually no one to give you any static. Curious why you haven't arranged side arm carry permits for at least some of the crew given the dodgey nature of the situation around the med. If you have VIPS aboard and then creepers at night... Second? Why only one anchor? If you want to be secure would you not set at least two? Spaced so you nose into the prevailing wind/current? 3rd? Why not darken ship at night? Leave only required nav lights on that would allow you to more easily see threats moving against you. You might consider goggles below deck to preserve your night vision.
@dmorga1
@dmorga1 3 жыл бұрын
I used to wonder that, too. But there are some other KZfaq channels that talk about this. International waters, maybe no big deal. But charter yachts often venture into territorial waters and are subject to the laws of that country. They can be boarded and searched, and a concern some countries have is about drug and weapons smuggling, so having sidearms for your crew, no matter how legal that might be in your home territory, could subject your boat to impoundment and your crew to detention while it gets sorted out. And you'd probably lose the weapons. So, for most vessels like this one, it's mainly vigilance and reasonable defense, whether through a fire hose, OC spray, or a number of hands on deck. For a captain like Tristan, firearms would be a tremendous liability. Can you imagine what would happen if you shot an intruder on your vessel with guests on board? Not only would that end that voyage, it would probably end your charter career.

In the video he shows the radar screen and the anchor circle. Nothing is in that circle. They could swing 360 degree circles around the anchor all night and not hit anything. If they start dragging the anchor alarm goes off, that's what anchor watch is for...
