Curious to see a day in the life of a marine biologist? For many of us, work in the field looks something like this, where days quickly turn into nights, and nights into days.

OMG! I loved every single minute of this video, please never stop! I'm manifesting my life as a marine biologist by watching videos like this and I'm truly loving every single one of them. Congrats on being able to stay awake, do your job and still have a good time with your partners. That's really cute and inspiring. Anyway, congrats! The video is amazing!

I would love to do all that research. I have always wanted to be a marine biologist since I was a kid. But I had a stroke when I was a kid. It gave me earning disability so my family will not let me go to college. I volunteer at my state science museum. One day I want to get a degree in marine biology.

Learning disabilities shouldn't keep you away from this kind of work. There are many ways to get there, and volunteering at a museum is definitely a great way to get started! I kept away from science for years because I thought I wasn't going to be able to do it. I struggled during my undergraduate degree as well. Ultimately, what really saved me was perseverance, motivation, and networking!

Marine's Science Café I love your channel! I do not want my family or my disability to stop my dream of marine biology. I hope one day I will get there. I read a lot of science book. At my state there is a sea turtle hospital I have helped the owner at environmental education about sea turtles by making an education cart about sea turtles. She wants me to make her a cart too. I try to put the ocean in my volunteering.

Great video, Marine! What did you want to know from DNA? Who is instructing each person of the team about their responsibilities and duties? Or each of them is doing their own research? Thank you!
@marinessciencecafe5098
@marinessciencecafe5098 5 жыл бұрын
Sorry for the lack of background in this video! I was trying to make it as simple as possible, perhaps a bit too simple... In this case, Elisa was responsible for the sampling during the night shift, so she was the one who decided when we did what. As part of the night shift team (only 3 of us), I had to help with all sampling activities. The DNA part is so cryptic, I should have described it more! Perhaps in part 2 ... :) In a nutshell, I was testing a new portable and quick species identification method on fish. In about 2 hours of prep work (DNA extractions and PCR library preparation), and 2 hours for the machine to run, I can then identify the species of up to 48 samples, right there, on the boat. Pretty cool!

Thank you for answering! ) actually for a person who has never been on a research vessel (for me) your video was very interesting and informative. And I don't know how much you can tell about this scientific work but for sure it would be great if you could add some information about research organization in your next video (what Institute or Uni is doing the research, what data you are collecting, what you anticipate to find and where the results will be published). And thank you for making this vlog! Very helpful for those who are just on their way to become marine biologists)

Can I become a marine biologist with marine science and technology/oceanography major?
@sharks2571
@sharks2571 Жыл бұрын
Hi. Maybe this is too late but I wanted to answer as this is something I've done. Yes! Personally I did my degree in Marine Science with Oceanography and Robotics at the Scottish Association for Marine Science (would highly reccomend studying there, I really loved it), but there are lots of marine science degrees out there. In the UK Bangor, Southampton and UHI (SAMS) are all well respected marine science courses. In the US, UCLA and Scripps have really good marine science departments (there are many more but these are the ones I'm most aware of). In Australia James Cook and Deakon universities are well known for their marine science programs, and university of tromso/UNIS (Norway) are the best if you want to do Arctic stuff (SAMS also does an Arctic degree). Also, yes, even if your degree technically isn't in marine bio you can definitely do a marine bio career. I've done a few marine bio internships and research experience mixing marine biology and Robotics, and am about to start a marine biology/technology PhD
