I taped this show every Sunday night and watched it at 3AM when I got home from the late shift. Lost the tapes over the years in moves while raising a family. I’d like to personally think all the people who saved their tapes, digitized them, and uploaded them to KZfaq so that we could have this fantastic archive. This is treasure to me ❤

This is show was proof that 80s music was king. Stayed up late as a high schooler to marvel and groove to this magic.

It was a dream for me to see jazz on television, but this show did so much more. It was fun, weird, and introduced me to some terrific new music. When a show has Conway Twitty performing with The Residents...that will never happen again. Glad these rare gems are around for people to watch.

Thanks a bunch for the incredible post of this specific edition of the monumental NIGHT MUSIC. I never saw this particular show but I do recall John Cale during my work stint in East Village and I can say that he was one of the nicest gentleman I had the pleasure of dealing with on numerous occasions. In terms of Harry Connick jr., he was way ahead of his time not in terms of his musical abilities but his generosity and character as well as commitment to his fellow musicians from what I know.

That was the most enjoyable evening of television I've had in way too long. (btw - that is Katie Webster, NOT Gladys Knight). Thanks for posting!

Wow I had John Cale confused with J.J. Cale! I was like wait a minute J.J. Cale was in Velvet Underground? That makes no sense and why didn't I know that? Okay wrong guy! lol

Sanborns sax solo at the end of Boulevard was balls. And props to the bass player for doing the mashed potato while playing. I was always so impressed on how tight the band sounded on songs they had never played before that week.

Much respect for HCJ, but Paul said it right "almost a little too over-confident" Haha! Harry was indeed... this early in his career he was really pushing those boundaries almost too hard... Yet within 5 years he would refine his style and exercise more discipline than one could imagine... Truly he was a modern day Sinatra by the mid 1990's. (Check out 'RedLight/Blue Light')

Supposedly Lou tried to get the folks who commissioned Drella to take Cale’s name off the album. 🙄 He was such a difficult person.

So Lou had a stipulation that stated John Cale not be included in the finale? Also why wasnt Conick Jr. on piano for this and who's bright idea was it to cut the song short.

Ariel Cohen Yeah, he didn't have the same impact in modern music as ...Jools Holland, Harry Connick Jr., Paul Shaffer and Glady's Night. Are you fucking kidding me? An ex-new wave band musician and tv-presenter, a Sinatra crooner revivalist, a TV bandleader and session musician and a decent soul singer. Compared to them, Lou Reed might as well have been Mozart.

It is far better to remain silent and appear to be a fool, than to open your mouth and remove all doubt. Lou Reed was a seminal voice in avant garde "modern music" whatever the frack that means. Too bad you missed it.
