Milky Way Made Easy: www.fototripper.com/store/mil...
This landscape photography vlog is jam-packed with adventure and photography tips. I even give you a free 'night photography' tutorial with the help of my flatulent assistant Uncle Grumpy.
After some delightful sunset photography at the hoodoos, I was very curious to see how the Fujifilm GFX100s would perform with astrophotography nightscapes using an f/4 lens. The results might surprise you.
Amanda gives a trucker some questionable hand gestures, Grumpton sings the same Abba song for a solid two hours and I have to shed my appropriate footwear to avoid rattlesnake bites.
Will I find a glorious composition before the sun goes down or have Grumptons many Tea-making pit-stops used up all of our time at 'Writing On Stone Provincial Park'? Will the lamest version of Bohemian Rhapsody ever witnessed make us a viral hit?
There's really only one way to find out. Hit play, then like, then watch again :)
Oh and if you tell me about that sensor spot in the mid-left of my sunset shot I definitely, 100% won't think you're a complete knob.

Rattlesnakes are active at night. I was doing nightscapes in that area and was walking without a headlight. I realized that probably wasn't the best idea. When I turned on the light, I found I has a three foot rattler shadowing me as I walked. I think it was hoping I would starttele up a snack for it. We had a lovely midnight strol together.

Loved this vlog. We love the badlands and had no idea about the snakes. But the astro was really enjoyable Gavin. I thought when Adam said "Just one .... after another" was gonna be the punch line. I loved the experiment outcome. Looked just like a car manufacturers poster. I love light painting. It's amazing how it works and the results are gorgeous. Finding a great foreground is the key isn't it. Thank you Gavin really lovely vlog.

If I had that sort of money I'm not sure I'd buy that Fuji Gavin but it certainly put up a good showing on astro. Have to say I can't understand Grumpton not appreciating Astro. The first time I watched an Alyn Wallace video it blew me away and seeing the Milky Way that first time was magical but it still never ceases to fill me with awe and inspire me. Makes me realise how 'small' we are. I only dabble in astro but really enjoy the challenge so appreciate what you make look easy is anything but.👍👍

Wow, there are some great images in this video Gavin! The milky way shot was my favorite for sure! I see two opportunities for some revenue there, the truck manufacturer and maker of the camper will be knocking on your door any day now. But the best thing for me, was what we call the "wife beater" shirt you had on and "trucker tan" on the arms 🤣. Not sure it that resinates with anyone but me but I had a good chuckle at your expense anyway. Thanks for another great video and sorry Fuji made you give that camera back.

From a technical standpoint, the GFX at its sensor size and pixel pitch, are diffraction limited starting after f/4. That's because there's soo many pixels, its pixels are actually smaller than even most APSC cameras. Now the reason why that matters, is when you focus to infinite with a lens that wide, the near DOF limit is just a couple of meters, with the far field obviously being infinite. That means you gain zero benefit from focusing to infinity above f/4, unless you're trying to also get something in focus that's within ~6ft in front of the camera. So all dropping down to f/8 or f/11 does is create a less sharp image due to diffraction, with zero useful increase in DOF or sharpness, and a longer exposure time. If you focus on anything after ~2 meters, you're in infinite focus. So taking a picture of anything off in the distance in a landscape, does not see a useful DOF increase, because the DOF is ~2m to infinite. Basically, unless you're trying to control vignetting (which I can't see that being a problem with that lens), you really should never shoot above f/4, because it's pointless for sharpness/DOF, and actually reduces the sharpness of your images.
@georgec9948
@georgec9948 2 жыл бұрын
Literally nobody cares what you have to say. And nobody cares about diffraction calculations. At least real photographers don't anyway. Go away
@peoplez129
@peoplez129 2 жыл бұрын
@@georgec9948 It definitely matters, and real photographers definitely care, especially when it comes to astrophotography. If gear isn't used properly, it will be used inefficiently and perform poorly. Imagine someone owns a $2,000 lens but it's soft because they're using f/8 and they have no clue why, so they just figure it's a bad lens. So they sell it, get another lens, and have the same issue. Or imagine spending time shooting at longer shutter speeds when it offers no useful benefit, and wasting your time taking all these long exposure shots when you could have exposed for shorter, with potentially less issues like tripod shake. It all matters. Real photographers do things like DOF and exposure calculations and know their camera/lens characteristics.
