This video discusses what it is like to work the night shift as a nurse. I give an hour-by-hour account on how your night might be as a nurse and what you can expect. Many new nurse graduates start out working the night shift. In addition, I discuss the most dangerous times you may feel sleepy, the disadvantages and advantages of working night shift.

So glad I found you, wish I found you a lot sooner. I would have had a much better time with being a new grad nurse. You are wonderful, Miss Sarah. You are a gifted teacher. There needs to be more like you on hospital units everywhere!! I don't want to go back to bedside nursing in a cardiac med-surg unit anymore. It was MISERABLE. You keep on being terrific. Thank you for all you do. I too, am a mom and want to get my BSN in nursing. Right now just have associate's degree. I am home and I enjoy being home but would like to find the right place for me to be working as an RN. I passed NCLEX on the first try. I studied well and I felt confident. Thank you again. :o)

+MercRN Hi MercRN, Wow, thank you so much for your comment. I am absolutely touched by your words, and they really mean a lot to me. I want to help others in the nursing world and let them know "we can do this together", and your comments were so encouraging to me. I'm so sorry to hear about your experience with bedside nursing. There are some units out there that are horrendous to work and it sounds like you were on one. Just know that there are better places for nurses to work and you will find something you like. Congrats on passing NCLEX the first try. It is a tough exam and passing on the first try is an amazing accomplishment. Thank you again for your comment and taking the time to share your story with me :) -Sarah

I’ve worked nights for almost 20 years both on the ambulance as a paramedic and the ER as a nurse. I’ve always managed to work a week and off a week so that I can have a social life with my family but when I’m on that week for nights my wife is almost like a single mom! LoL! I love nights though on the ambulance (strictly 911) and the ER.

I worked 11p-7:30a 5 nights a week in my first RN position. The work was fine, but I physically could not tolerate the hours. I decided that unless I could find a day shift position within one year, I would leave nursing for something where I could work normal hours. I thankfully got a job on day shift and I am now very happy. I don't know how things would have played out in my life if I could have worked three 12 hour night shifts instead of five 8 hour night shifts.

+ooooo3 Oh, wow that is very rough working five 8 hour night shifts like that. I don't blame you because night shift is hard all by itself. Studies have shown it is very hard on the body and some women have fertility problems due to working night shift. I'm very glad you found a day shift position. Thank you so much for sharing your insight :)

I have a question. I just graduated from RN school as ADN...and planning to go to BSN program. I applied to school and got accepted for this fall. I also got hired as New grad. Both are far away. Would it better to go to school or get some experience? I might not even obtain 1 year experience if i'm going to school. What would you do?
@RegisteredNurseRN
@RegisteredNurseRN 7 жыл бұрын
It really depends....on what you want to do and if you can juggle doing both at the same time. I've worked with new graduate ADN nurses who earned their BSN while they worked (they earned it online...don't know if you are doing that?) and, they did just fine. Some prefer to gain a year's experience and then earn their BSN...while others want to just get it over with. Personally, (since you asked me what I would do)...I would concentrate on learning the ropes of being a new nurse because it can be intimidating at first, and then may be 6 months to a year later pursue earning a BSN. For me, it would have been too much trying to learn how to be a new nurse and go back to school at the same time...but that is just me. Best wishes with your decision :)

How did this work out for you? I'll be entering nursing school and have taken a PRN PCT position. They want me to start on nights and I told them I would. I'll be leaving a good job to go back to school, so I know I need to keep some employment while I'm in school, but I'm a little worried about being tired in class, time to study, etc...
