On my 4th day of orientation as a new grad RN... because of the pandemic I wasn’t able to get a job for 5 months out of nursing school. I feel so overwhelmed of how much information I forgot and still have to learn from being new. Thank you for this video and the comments I feel a lot less alone on this journey!

Nurses like you, who appreciate and respect their techs, are the reason we don’t quit! I am so much more willing to go above and beyond for a nurse who sees my value and is even willing to help me out or even teach me things sometimes. It’s the most exhausting and stressful job I’ve ever had but also the most fulfilling because I’ve had the honor to work with some super amazing nurses. I’m binge watching you tonight because I’m just so excited I will begin nursing school in two months! 🤩

I’m a tech while I’m in the nursing program and I can tell you, so many new grads have acted like they’re too good to deal with bathroom related messes and other things . Please please help your techs. You might be busy but remember for the 4 patients you have they have 12! Also the more you help your techs the more they will help you too!

Ugh I’m a new nurse and I really didn’t know for a few days that I should dump the beside commode out. I thought I was being helpful answering call lights and helping patients go to the bathroom but I didn’t know if they needed to chart pee or stool so to be safe I just didn’t dump it out :( and it gave the aide the wrong impression of me.. learned my lesson

Your so helpful. I'm on my 6th day as a new grad RN, I feel like I'm drowning. I had two pts code on me so far. My mind went blank I had to have someone come in and take over. I felt like a failure. 😔
@NurseLiz
@NurseLiz 4 жыл бұрын
There is NO WAY you can successfully participate in codes 6 days out, heck 6 months out. You aren't expected to know that yet! Please don't beat yourself up about that. You will get there. Give it time. Nobody popped out of nursing school knowing how to do everything, I promise. I don't think I was helpful in a code until I had been a nurse for probably a year.

@@NurseLiz I try to tell myself "you can do this." but there is SO MUCH and it's all overwhelming! I'm trying not to beat myself up about it. I know it has to get better eventually. I’m a new grad nurse, about 5 months in on a tele/PCU unit. I still feel super lost and really dumb so I needed this video. I’ve talked to some of my grad friends but they don’t seem to resonate the same feelings I have. It’s comforting to hear you address exactly what I think and feel. Trying to hang in there and remind myself I’m still learning and new but it’s definitely hard.

Omg I love your energy and that you are all about being helpful and nice to everyone in the hospital, no matter the job! I am an x ray tech and while many nurses are great to jump in to help, there are some that do not or they disappear as soon as I walk in with my portable machine. While most times I don't need help there are times I do and it is so wonderful when I get an eager nurse to offer help, even when I end up not needing it. I also work prn in central telemetry, as I had a major surgery and was put into this job full time for six months due to a lifting restriction and I was just surprised and sad with how rude many nurses are to the telemetry techs. I was appalled with how I was treated as a telemetry tech vs an x ray tech, I was talked down at so much in telemetry but in x ray I am a lot more respected by nurses....yet I'm the same person with the same attitude. I am now finishing my prerequisites for a BSN program and I will always treat everyone with respect. Thank you so much for your tips and info!

Not a new grad (graduating in May!) but even in nursing school it took me until now to really become comfortable being my own advocate and taking control of my own education when it comes to clinical. I felt fine asking my professors questions about the lectures all the time, but asking about skills that I thought I should have mastered already? Absolutely not! Haha!! I have actually been really proud of myself for not caring as much about making myself look dumb because like you said the nurse (and patient) would much rather have me ask a silly question than do something wrong and potentially harm someone! Thanks for all your tips and advice! I always feel so encouraged after watching your videos! (PS I’m kind of binge watching all your videos to unwind after a somewhat stressful day! 😂)

I've just finished orientation and am now on my own. I was so overwhelmed during my last shift that I forgot to raise the HOB up for a patient that has continuous tube feedings. I also forgot to turn the Lopez valve back to open for the feeding and the feeding got all over the towel. This happened during the last 45 min of my shift and the oncoming nurse went ballistic. She literally was screaming at me and I was so panicked that I was unable to answer her questions appropriately. I felt so small, dumb, and incompetent. I also saw her complaining to the charge nurse. I still feel bad about it because I forgot very simple but important things that could have had huge repercussions. It was one of my worst shifts so far and I know there will be worse. It's pretty disheartening.

ugh i'm so sorry that you had that experience. It's absolutely OK to make mistakes. They should never be met that way. How are you supposed to know everything?? you cant. Ugh. I'm sorry.

your video has helped me tremendously! i had my third shift yesterday as a new grad in a nurse residency program and my day ended with me crying in my car at the end of shift. i felt so overwhelmed and feel like i know absolutely nothing, despite doing really well in school. After watching your video, i took a deep breath and realized that everything i am feeling is normal and that i WILL get through it. thank you !

I'm not a new grad but this video is great. There are days I still don't know! I'm never afraid to ask questions. I think the minute you stay silent is the min errors can happen. I also agree networking is the best! There are always more people feeling the same way as you!!!

Nurse Liz I want to THANK YOU soooo much for uploading this... you don't know how much this really helps me as I start my new grad journey in a week... really great tips and confidence booster. Especially when I was in nursing school, sometimes when I asked questions to my clinical professor, she'd be like "umm you are supposed to know that." And then I felt so stupid and made me ask less questions to her. You made me realize that it's better to get yelled at or being seen as dumb than jeopardizing patient care. Thank you so much Liz!

i'm an lpn and want to go back for the bsn but ive been discouraged especially at the facility i work because lack of support and i wasn't trained/oriented, it makes it harder.. i feel like i don't know what i'm doing. watching this video has given me hope again, i think i just need to find a place where i can get the proper training, knowledge and skills that i was taught.

I’m a LPN too and I’m in a BSN program currently. I am working a facility that gave me 3 days of training on the floor then put me in a newly opened unit by myself with 19 patients and I average 2 discharges and 2 admissions a shift. I have no clue what I’m doing and that nurse to patient ratio is insane and also scary from a patient safety aspect. Skilled facilities are very scary places. I’m hoping this gets better when I am a RN in a hospital.

Hey girl hey! I’m in a weird new grad spot. I have had my license since Dec 2017, however I haven’t started working yet as I have had two babies since graduating nursing school in June 2017! Although I’m approaching one year as a RN, I am still a new grad. Once I get settled with my new family, I can’t wait to start working to put these tips to use! I love your channel because one, you are a mom so to see you balance work/school/family is inspirational. And also, it wasn’t until I watched your videos that I truly understood what it meant to be an NP. Thanks for all of your tips and thanks for sharing with us and showing us newbies some love!
