Sometimes older Lionel engines don’t have the best light output and a simple upgrade to LED can fix that. But if your engine is older command control, it’s not quite as simple as swapping bulbs. Check out this quick installation guide to fix your TMCC and Legacy Command Equipped Trains!

Nice. Swapping out the old bulbs for LEDs makes a big difference. Even on conventional engines. You can also get LEDs with resistors already soldered in to make it easier.

Very cool, So I have a bnsf coal car with a EOT light that quit working, n I'm no electrician, but what would you suggest to fix it?

Since the EoT likely draws its power simply from the track, you could just replace the bulb with either one of the same type or a small LED like the ones I’ve used in this example. Likely wouldn’t need that resistor. Is the light within the EoT easy to access or remove?

How many volts is the LED rated for?

Well you tried and show it well but there is a lot missed. LED's require DC current, LED's are rated at 1.5 to 3.0 volts.and these trains run from 5 to 25 volts, so any AC type loco for these to work will need a diode and resistor or a voltage regulator circuit to not fry the LED. In your case the resistor as you are using it shows a load to the electronic circuit so it knows there is a light on it when it was designed for a heavy load bulb and the LED is a light load light.

What’s the good thing about a 2 chuff rate instead of the modern 4 chuff rate for Lionel Trains, especially for your two Challenger Type Locomotives?

Funny you should mention that, as one of my Challengers is just a 2-chuff and the other is the 4-chuff. But they both sound fine to me. Can’t really tell until they’re going slowly
