Rogue traders Found this on a boiler swap today. bad pipework , undersized gas , incorrectly piped. shockingly bad really. Working in Bramley in Leeds today. New gas combi boiler ,We've come to do a boiler swap. We're going to take out an old Ferroli boiler. So a customer's been having a few problems with radiators not working. So they decided they'd have a new boiler, so we've come just to do a new boiler, but we found a few problems once we've started lifting some floorboards up. So I'll just show you what they are now.
So we are here today just to do, well, to do a boiler swap and also get the pipe work, but when we've had a look under here, when we came and quoted this, we've seen they had 22 gas and then so we just assumed that it's okay because it's obviously, it's 22 mm and that's what we need for his gas supply, but when we looked down here, it reduces down to 15 mm on a compression fitting under a floorboard, and so one thing we wouldn't want a compression fitting under a floorboard, but also we wouldn't reduce the gas like that either.
So that's something now that we're going to have to sort out and then the fuel spur which we would have expected we could connect into the wire goes down there, goes along there and it's been connected up to an extension lead under the floor, so again, we're going to have to update that. And then we look at the pipe works. It's got 22 mm pipe there, and then when we look here, it goes to 15 straight away, so all the house is then in 15 mil pipe, but it's worse than that. And so we didn't, these bobs, somebody's butchered these bob before, so we've only just, we've took them back up in some places, so they're all smashed to bits but we have done these.
So, then if we have a look downstairs, some of these pipes, this radiator, on the floor from the radiator goes through into there when it should come to here, but instead it comes through into there and it goes into this old radiator in here, so it comes through here, into here. So then it has to go through this radiator to connect to the radiator on the other side, so what that means is, if either of the lock shields are turned off on them radiators or if the furnace stops on the radiators would have closed, then not all the heating system would work downstairs.
Thank you for taking the time to watch our video, Nightmare Installs.

Can anyone suggest why there are 50 dislikes to this video? This is a real educational experience and is of great value to all gas engineers who are looking to improve themselves not just newbies. Perhaps all 50 of them are rogue gas installers and are on guard as they know that their time is limited!

I had central heating installed by so-called heating engineers. I had just put new floorboards replaced on the landing and bathroom. They were screwed down and very neat until the heating engineers decided to lift them with a large crowbar, they broke every floorboard they lifted, they took out the old pipework and replaced it with push-fit plastic pipes which they lay on the joists in small cutouts which wouldn't let the boards lay flat, the used the broken boards which we're nailed roughly over the joists. The only engineer who made a decent job was the one that fitted the boiler. I was forced to lift the broken boards and increase the cutouts in the joists then once again replace the broken floorboards. There are so many people doing bodge plumbing now due to the lack of apprenticeships.

Wow, that was so shocking I wouldn't have believed it if you didn't film it. The icing on the cake for me was the extension lead under the floor boards, it's not rocket science to add a fused spur onto an existing socket circuit. How the previous installer cocked up the flow/return install I will never know, just goes to show that experience counts for more then any qualifications you can obtain from a crash course in gas engineering. Keep up the good work bud.

At the company I work for, we had a problem recently. Flow and returns come from the boiler in 22mm, but then under the floor everywhere the flow and return circuit was 15mm, then splitting off into 8mm on rads. The heating was jumping from one rad to another. Some would get hot then others would cool down and vice versa. So we sorted out the run changed rads to 15mm circuit to 22 and all worked like a dream. We also did there boiler before as well. Installed baxi platinum!. Then all the radiator problem occurred.

That's sick, and the worst part is that it actually worked.. The gas line made in 15 copper is way too thin for a 36kw machine, when in runs for 10 meters :) so next time always check dynamic gas press before install (if the old one still runs)

As a consumer, this is completely shocking. But as somebody who has been soliciting for new boiler quotes, I sense these nightmarish installs are becoming the norm. Sadly, some installers are seeing gas safe registration as akin to winning the golden ticket in the Lottery. I have witnessed people who were incompetent plumbers 6 months ago, now charging 1200 pounds installation fee to swap out a combination boiler, now they are Gas Safe Registered, but boasting on social media feeds how they did install in 15 minutes! As a consumer these are really frightening times, and something needs to be done about it! But it is heartening to see engineers like Allen are doing a great job exposing these crooks!

Great video, quick question is it ok to have my cold water and hot water piped in 15mm from my boiler, I’m re doing my house just now from old steel pipe which is a mess and needs stripping out. So I am planning to re do my cold and hot water in 15mm jg pipe. I see it already comes out my boiler in 15mm copper for a distance then it transfers to the old steel pipe which looks to be 22mm. My thinking was replace it all with 15mm so it doesn’t go up and down in size. Thanks, Robert

This is interesting to me as when my husband has lifted a floorboard for one reason or another I can see the pipes going to all my radiators are like thin pieces of string, just draped across the air below ground like tinsel on an old tree. It's either 8 or 10mm. But all the pipes going into and coming out of my boiler are fat pipes.

This kind of shoddy work is (almost) unheard of here in Denmark. I sense that pride in a job well done is a sentiment in rapid decline among tradesmen in the U.K. It is NOT the same here.I cannot give an explanation for this but do hope the moral compass can be reset over the North Sea very soon.

Hanne Catton Its not (usually) proper professionals doing this kind of work. We have a lot of rented property with landlords who just want to spend as little as possible, and if they dont do it themselves (many do!) employ the cheapest person they can find (who is probably not qualified to do the job). Then there are the DIY folks, who think they know enough, and often get away with it (we have lots of DIY shops that actively encourage some work). And we have a lot of old, repeatedly “upgraded” properties. Yes, there are some professional tradesmen who still do poor work, but most are good.

Hi Allen I'm renovating my small 3 bed house and trying to sort the central heating out. Out of interest how much 22mm pipe should I have on my feed and return before I drop to 15mm. At the moment there's about 2 meters on both feed and return from the combi boiler then 15mm to all radiators. Any advice is very welcome and don't worry I'm not going to tough the gas pipe.

Landlords are notorious diy bodgers. If this is owner occupied then the fitter should be reported to gas safe.

Why would you quote for a new boiler without looking at the system its on? Seems remiss to me

We were changing boiler as the other boiler was very old. The customer wanted something that worked and has warranty. Thanks for watching.

steve french Absolutely correct. Gas has a latent energy released by combustion to give heat. A 60% efficient boiler releases 60% of the energy whereas a 90% boiler releases 90% making it effectively 50% more efficient than the 60% one for the amount of gas burned. So of course the volume of gas used must differ, It's simple arithmetic that even my 7 year old can get.

pmailkeey my reply demonstrates the laws of thermodynamics and does not refer to boiler age but it's efficiency. Natural gas produces approx 1000 Btu per cubic ft. A 60% efficient boiler burning 1 cubic ft produces 600 Btu, a 90% efficient boiler produces 900 Btu for the same amount of gas burned. Thus a 90% efficient boiler will produce 50% more heat for any given volume of gas burned and will therefore need to burn 50% less gas to maintain the same temperature. That's simple thermodynamics... It's true the age of a boiler is no measure of its efficiency, however we all know older design boilers are less efficient than modern ones.

pmailkeey my comment is correct and verifiable. Whilst the actual heat produced by combustion is the same, the boilers ability to transfer that heat into the system as usable energy depends entirely on its efficiency. Again simple and verifiable.

pmailkeey . The heat USED is what matters NOT produced by combustion. Whilst I respect your right to have an opinion... Having actual facts best. This link proves my approx 1000Btu/cu.ft. www.engineeringtoolbox.com/heating-values-fuel-gases-d_823.html This link gives an explanation of why older boilers can be less efficient powertoswitch.co.uk/old-boiler-vs-new-boiler/ This link explains the difference in efficiency calculations www.forbesmarshall.com/fm_micro/news_room.aspx?Id=boilers&nid=112 Which points out that thermal efficiency is more important that combustion efficiency and your argument about blue flames is therefore wide of the mark. Also from Which www.which.co.uk/reviews/boilers/article/boiler-energy-efficiency And FYI any new gas boiler fitted in the UK now has to have at least 92% SEDBUK 2009 efficiency otherwise they fail building regulations (Parts L) and cannot be certified.

I no it's a feroili... But why quote to change boiler if it's a problem with them rads. Surely a re- pipe of the heating circuit and a gas pipe upgrade if your not getting correct gas rate and inlet pressure is all that's required. Oh and of course sort the wiring.. but the boiler although a crap one is apparently working correctly? Why change it?

@@AllenHart999 To be honest that's a weak answer. All the customer knows is they have a problem and what they think is causing it. It's you the professional who are supposed to look at the issue, figure out whats wrong and advise. I get asked to do pointless jobs all the time but advise the customer on how to actually fix the problem rather than just doing what they ask.

And your right Garry, looks like a diy job though. Must admit after 27 of trading as Gas Tech I never give quotations and only estimates with very clear and detailed terms and conditions. Its for this very reason, what will we find when we lift boards etc? Have never found giving estimates only to be to my detriment and clearly explain to my customer why I do this and always show my customer any work that has been hidden and requires updating.
