In a comprehensive interview to discuss the implications of the Ukraine crisis on India’s relationships with Russia, China and the United States, former Foreign Secretary Shyam Saran agrees that it has created a predicament but adds we have experience handling such situations. However, he accepts that the tight rope India is presently walking could become more difficult in the weeks ahead. He also says that as Russia’s dependence on China, which is already undeniable, significantly increases there could be pressure on Moscow from Beijing to change its stand on the India-China as well as India-Pakistan issues and also to diminish the sale of Russian military equipment to India, which is targeted against China or its close ally Pakistan.

Diplomacy is trick of times. The USA did similar strategic onslaught on Iraq, Syria and Afghanistan. India had hard time then like now. Henry Kissinger, master strategist of the US questioned the NATO expansion to encircle Russia. NATO is relic of the cold war. It works for the US hegemony. Situation is complex. Both sides must solve this crisis which is both human and economic.

Maybe you aren't following the initiatives taken by the govt in terms of Atmanirbhar Bharat. Several top Indian pvt sector forms like Tatas, Bharat Forge-Kalyani grp, Larsen & Toubro, Apollo Microsystems, Astra Microwave are already into defence manufacturing, besides the large public sector ones such as DRDO, BEL, HAL etc. India's defence exports have increased from ₹1,500 crore in 2016-17 to ₹8,500 crore in 20-21. The Govt has set an ambitious target to achieve exports of about ₹35,000 crore ($5 billion) in aerospace and defence goods/services by 2025. These things take time and 8500 crores is a healthy figure.. Russia has been more than cooperative in hand holding and transfer of technology. So it's not that all is bad.. There are several strong green shoots. Just that this takes time.

@@kevincastelino3209 These are small countries and are not threatened by 2 powerful and hostile nuclear weapon powers, China +Pakistan add to that the unholy nexus between them. And there is indeed a trade & defence pact with US, India has diversified its defence equipment purchase considerably from the US. However, there is no alternate to indigenous, self reliant defence manuf in the long term. however these things take time and transfer of key defence technology is never easy. Unfortunate, even though we have a massive amount of STEM graduates, innovation, new technology development has been minimal. Maybe its a defect in the South Asian gene pool, our brightest and best emigrate overseas, maybe lack of resources, a sluggish bureaucracy who is used to receiving kick-backs from foreign defence purchases, Could be a multitude of reasons, HOWEVER its just not there..!

What I spiritually had perceived few years ago is that Whole world has to face major destruction and a radical change in socio-economic and even geographical changes in the world, still huge such developments seems to take place from now to 2031. Such changes people may not even think of till date as u can say it a new civilisation u may see in near future after all such destructions.

Ethics and principles are given little importance while pursuing foreign policy in present times and also in the past. Each country these days give priority to their own interests. It is not an ideal world. India suffered a lot in the past due to its foreign policy based on principles.

Observe his provoking questions to Saran. All are aimed at extracting some criticism on BJP govt frm Saran. Conveniently overlooks the point made by you.

N India wonders why nobody comes to help them when they have a conflict at their borders. It's simple: you maintain a neutral stance when other countries are in conflicts, they will do likewise. This was a great opportunity to call out an obvious aggressor and India blew this opportunity.

Obvious aggressor? And NATO and US are peace keeping forces, huh.. And as for the help, the west didn't help bcz it didn't suit their interest not bcz of india's neutral position, and in future also the help is not gonna come whether we support them or not.. And ukraine always taking anti- India stance and now asking for support, isn't that ironic..

@Hirakjyoti Barman you think Nato US would wait this long? Don't you think if they actually had aggressive intentions, they would have done it in the 90s when Russia was on its knees? Stop making excuses... your master said that Ukraine shouldn't even be a country. Think everyone heard that.

There is one important lesson India’s ad hoc erratic policy wonks may well have taken to heart. It has been famously said, “Multi alignment is not to be confused with neutrality. They are not one and the same thing”. If and when the crunch time comes the former has all the making of a pratfall between two stools. Somewhere down the line things have to be accounted for.

Another good interview by Karan T. It’s laughable how this diplomat is trying to defend India’s normally hypocritical policies- talk the high moral path but act utterly shamelessly. This is certainly not the first time that India has tried to play a double game. That’s in its interests, but at least stop the usual hypocritical nonsense of looking down your nose at other countries for pursuing their own interests. He shows clearly that talk of international rules based order etc is utter nonsense to be used and thrown away as India has done for decades.

Our focus is not or Russia or Ukraine, the challenges we face comes from China and Pakistan. We cannot weaken ourselves by taking 'principled stands' on others war, specially when everybody knows that both the parties are compromising with principles. Regarding others who question us they should be asked why they were sending their fleets when India was trying to prevent a genocide in east Pakistan. Pakistanis and Chinese have not only blatantly committed genocides but they have also rewarded the perpetrators for committing these crimes. And this has been acceptable to western world so who gives a damn what these kind of people think about us.

With such impeccable credentials as Shyam Saran has, it was a forgone conclusion that he would carry his point despite the indomitable you Mr Karan Thapar! But it was disappointing to see him defending the callously inefficient MEA, on the contrary Mr Shashi Tharoor on NDTV with New Nidhi Razdan was forthright and made his point brilliantly.
