Nightstand infested with termites.

One day I discovered that my nightstand was infested with termites. I got my house fumigated a few months after this video shot. I have another video (unpublished) showing the termites coming through the floor where the leg of the nightstand was planted. After moving the nightstand outside you could see a small hole on the floor where the leg of the nightstand indented the carpet. The floorboards beneath the nightstand creak loudly. I'm sure they chomped up the floor quite a lot before getting to my nightstand. I never mention or show in the video that this is occurred on the second story of the house. Crazy.

I know the feeling. Just found this kind of frass inside a dresser and evidence of subterranean termites. So that means 2 different species of termites we are going to be dealing with. Also, your neighbor most likely has them too since it’s a duplex so you guys can at least split the cost of a tent fumigation.
@silvermica
@silvermica 3 жыл бұрын
The other owner and I split the fumigation cost. Although, it took some convincing - initially, they didn't believe there was a termite problem. Even after seeing this video. Instead choosing to believe that the nightstand was infested. This was not true since I bought the nightstand new and you could also see that the termites came through the floor and then into the nightstand. Good times!

Egad. That'll probably work. But, all the bugs are still inside though. As for my nightstand, I took my nightstand outside and sprayed it down with some type of termite spray that I had bought from the hardware store. I left the nightstand outside for a few days before cleaning it up and bringing it back inside. After that I had the house tented and fumigated. The thing I understand about termites is that they always comeback and all you can really do is fumigate every so many years.

If it's drywood termites, get couple of electric heaters and overheat the room to at least 120 deg F (of course close the door to keep hot air in the room) for few hours. Do this when it's very hot outside (100 deg F?). If you can overheat the queen (embedded in some piece of lumber) and she dies, then that should take care of the drywood termite colony. Of course this would not work on subterranean termite colony as the bulk of colony is located underground.

@silvermica
@silvermica 3 жыл бұрын
I'm still here - the building still here - so good enough I guess. But, yeah, I'm sure it's a mess in the floors and walls. The funny thing was at the time I tented/fumigated the house (2017) the other owners (i'm in a duplex) blew it off - saying it was just this nightstand that brought the termites in. Of course, that was total nonsense - besides I bought the nightstand brand new from Restoration Hardware two decades earlier. And, just a smidgeon of internet research would reveal just how common termites are and that tenting your house every few years isn't really that unusual. Where I live, every house has or will have termites at some point.

Years ago I had a bamboo/wicker nightstand, over a year I started noticing odd things like dust, then at night I could hear slight strange clicking/popping noises coming from it! I thought I was going crazy! I noticed holes and I started poking the holes and opening them up with a pin and surprise! Termites! It was disgusting. I threw it out, thankfully it never got to the walls. The table was imported from Indonesia and I believe they were dormant until they were in ideal tempt. Hi silvermica, I came across your video while looking up for those little light brown stuff on the bed frame as well as my floor. Do you still remember how many termites were there in your lamp stand?
@silvermica
@silvermica 4 жыл бұрын
er... I didn't count them. Maybe ten or twenty inside the nightstand during a given moment in time. I'm sure the house had hundreds or even thousands of termites. The termites ate their way through the floorboards of the house and into the nightstand. I shot a video of that too - but never posted. By the way, I fumigated the house in 2017. All is fine (for now).

@@mmapitsisemenya2177 - Don't recall exactly, since this was three years ago. I remember buying a can of something to kill termites from the hardware store, then I called professional exterminators and they tented the house for several days.

@@silvermica There are two reasons in my opinion - there are not many these termites in Canada due to the colder climate plus California I think is suffering from the lack of drinking water. In addition to that here in Canada, we have free medical coverage.

@@oneundecided - I'm lucky in that don't need free medical coverage. Water is a problem here in California. I'm from this area - so I don't have much of a reason to move - outside of retirement plans (maybe).

Those are fat healthy termites. Ours are black here in Texas. So your home has it to. nooo My home just got termites and it takes 60-90 days for bait to work. They started crawling on my kids floors even after they sprayed.

I hope you just threw the nightstand out casue you dont get rid of termites with sprays. If you have issues with termites and thats why you want the home fumigated thats not how you kill termites. All you need to do is purchase a chemical such as termidor and if you have concrete around the outside of your home drill holes 16inchs apart all around the home and inject the chemical diluted with water into each hole. If no concrete is around the home you just need to dig a trench 6 inchs wide by 6 inchs deep all around the home and apply the chemical to the ground same amount every 16inchs then use a hose to have it penetrate the ground. This will kill any termites since they will bring the chemical to the nest and kill everything plus prevent new termites for up to a year some chemicals say up to 5 years. If you do it yourself you will save yourself thousands. The only time you should have to fumigate or do a heat treatment is for horrible flea, and bedbug issues since roachs are very easy to kill now adays within 30days using a spray , insect growth regulator and bait such as max force or advion. The Igr is basicly a birth control for the bugs and makes them want to eat more bait and costs less then 100$ to do yourself.

I fumigated in August of 2017. It was complicated for me because I own half of a duplex (both units need to be fumigated at the same time). Convincing the other owners this needed to be done was difficult - but I was successful and was able to fumigate a few months after I shot that video.
