Spaceship Earth might be a reference to George Orwell, who wrote: "The world is a raft sailing through space with, potentially, plenty of provisions for everybody; the idea that we must all cooperate and see to it that everyone does his fair share of the work and gets his fair share of the provisions seems so blatantly obvious that one would say that no one could possibly fail to accept it unless he had some corrupt motive for clinging to the present system"
@esakoivuniemi

Wikipedia says about spaceship earth: The earliest known use[1] is a passage in Henry George's best known work, Progress and Poverty[2] (1879). From book IV, chapter 2: It is a well-provisioned ship, this on which we sail through space. If the bread and beef above decks seem to grow scarce, we but open a hatch and there is a new supply, of which before we never dreamed. And very great command over the services of others comes to those who as the hatches are opened are permitted to say, "This is mine!" en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spaceship_Earth

Great analysis as always. And yea, I think Tuomas wrote this from the perspective of our evolutionary descendants ("Mankind, our kin, aeons ago"), remembering us and how it all began, at a point where they see the end of themselves coming ("We are, we were, and will not be"). Making sure that the beginnings of life will be remembered in the future, by whatever species evolves after them.

Tuomas is an amazingly ingenious lyricist. There are so many details hidden within the videos and lyrics. Did you notice how the song unfolded from pre-life to post-life. We held our breath and then along came suffering. They show a dinosaur fossil, hinting at possibly the suffering is the end of dinosaurs. The empty zoo is maybe before fauna. This song is sung from the We and the They perspective. "We are the singer of the gone". "We are, we were, and will not be". Did you also notice how the ending visuals went backwards to the beginning of the video screen. Except at the end the screen was cracked as if it was a relic from a bygone civilization? What a fascination song and lyric. Great reaction again my man. I was surprised that you were familiar with Father Pikaia? Be well and I will see you next time. Peace. We have been here a while At the end of Pi, as along came harvest (Pi has no end, or is it also the circle of life? - Harvest - Death of Mankind or the Earth itself?) We will remember all the suffering We wrote this in a tongue you will understand Words and melodies with a touch of coloring We were there and will remember mankind Our kin Aeons ago

It is amazing that Tuomas wrote this song to whoever comes after us sometime in the future. He has noted in other songs how we understand kuneiform and Hurrian hymn nr. 6 and he knows whoever it is will understand our writing such as we have understood those before us and this song is a statement to them. "Do not make the same mistakes" and to also shame us if we fail to protect our home now. They will know, and everyone will remember. This song is easily my favourite from this album.

Tuomas has been doing his research for this song. The phrase “spaceship Earth” hasn’t been in use since the 70’s, when there was a book by that name that popularised that term. On their previous album, Nightwish tackled evolution. This time it appears to be touching upon extinction, at least in this piece. It makes no sense to me that Tuomas would want to go back and cover ground that he so solidly nailed with “The Greatest Show On Earth.” (Did Floor provide that Dutch word?)

This song... storytelling at its best! Just some points I'm still thinking about: - It's pretty clear that the "singers from the gone" face extincton when they sing this song. It's the "end of pi". "We will not be". I think that means that our universe is about to implode. The Big Crunch, aeons after the Big Bang. So they look back at life, a procession that starts with the very first acorn and ends with themselves. - "Will have a visit, as along came heartbeat" - this one I don't get. Who comes for a visit? The singers of the gone? And did they bring heartbeat to earth? A higher form of life? - Suffering is used a few times. In my opinion, it stands for mass extinction which the world faced a couple of times (and we're in the middle of one right now). "We held our breath, as along came suffering" could refer to the huge asteroid that crashed on earth - which led to the end of dinasaurs - which pathed the way for everything that came after. How fitting that there is that long instrumental section after that first "suffering". Could stand for the long time., life itself needed to recover from that hit before evolution prevailed again. - "The living lie, dead afraid" - what a line! Could mean so many things. Are the living too afraid to walk tall (to take full advantage of life), because they are too scared? Or is it a reference to a big untruth that surrounds mankind? Maybe it refers to us being the only species that is afraid of death? Maybe without a reason? Is that our living lie (the lie about life), dead afraid meaning being afraid about death? - Finally: "After all, we should've never appeared." Who is "We"? In the context of the lyrics around that line, it should refer to the "singers of the gone" and not to mankind. So I think, this is not a criticism about how we treat the world and that we are the ones that caused the next "suffering". I think, it refers to "Will have a visit" in the song. Are the singers having second thoughts about having played a big role in the world's evolution themselves? - Spaceship Earth has at least two meanings as well. It could mean "On this planet, we're all sitting in one boat - and sooner or later we'll behave accordingly". Or it could mean that mankind actually had to leave the planet in actual spaceships looking for a new home or just living forever in space. Both ways, I think we're VERY far from the "wisdom" and "understanding". Man, I hope it comes along sometimes soon. Sorry for posting a wall of words. But I could write books about these 36 lines. WHAT A SONG!

This song is a warning. Our failings as a species have now been documented in a form that anyone coming after us will understand as we understand the writing of all our ancient civilizations. So if we fail at saving the Earth anyone after us will remember and blame us. Our error was to develop written language because anyone after us will now understand what we did. It is quite an effective thing to put a threath in such a beautiful song. 😨

Looking at the video is like watching old TV images. There are, what they call 625-lines (the old frequency for older TV sets, before the higher resolutions of digital TV's.) That gives the horizontal waves in the image. Look at vertically straigth lines, you will see a waveform going from top to bottom. And also there are lots of interferences and glitches in the images. It's like someone in the future found an old video tape and watched it. You see the same things when you look at old TV images from the 50's and 60's. On purpose??

Interesting. I was thinking that it reminded me of the images sent from a rover vehicle that we send to another world, relayed back to Earth. Like this was a message sent from the future to us in the past, or perhaps images of our present being seen by someone in the future. The smashed monitors/TV's could be related right? Definitely remnants of our world. Hmmmm... Much food for thought.

@@ChrisPage68 I’m not talking about the roll-back to the beginning. I think that that is what you mean, the pointed lines, the pixelation, over the images, from 5:35 to 5:51? No, I’m talking about the whole video almost from the start. When you look closely you will see that it isn’t a stable image, the images are wavy. You see it best in the animal listing, at 2:25. Look at the vertical lines there, there is a wave pattern from top to bottom, it will surely catch your eye. And yes, the pixilation at the end could be generic code, I agree. Haven’t thought about it, but it is most likely so. More so because there is a DNA chain visible in several parts of the video. I WISH for all of you a peaceful and quiet NIGHT. Groeten vanuit België.

I think one quote which will fit this perfectly is from Adlai Stevenson (US Governor) which said the following 5 days before his death in 1965 in at the United Nations council in my home country Switzerland: „We travel together, passengers on a little space ship, dependent on its vulnerable reserves of air and soil; all committed for our safety to its security and peace; preserved from annihilation only by the care, the work, and, I will say, the love we give our fragile craft. We cannot maintain it half fortunate, half miserable, half confident, half despairing, half slave - to the ancient enemies of man - half free in a liberation of resources undreamed of until this day. No craft, no crew can travel safely with such vast contradictions. On their resolution depends the survival of us all.“ I wish some US politicians and of course a lot of other countries too would think about this quote and keep a global picture. We all know we have issues in our own countries but we have one common global issue and we as a species should have one common goal and direction we should travel to. This song performed by Band from Finland with members from the UK, Netherlands and Finland proofs that Corporation together can easily be done if you have one common goal... In their case Music and they transport it into the last corner of this planet. Are there challenges? Yes of course. There always were challenges, the whole evolution was about challenges and suffering. Endless forms towards the stronger.... This line is actually a slap in the face for human mankind. Are we the stronger form? Or will there be a stronger form than us? A simple invisible virus was able to show us easily who is stronger in the end. We are weaken ourselves with our terrible behaviors and care for other forms of life. It is so sad.... This is easily one of the strongest songs out there. It's also the key to the whole album....

M But because we are who we are and do what we are doing we will disappear again. Especially when human and nature are each others opposites. Or when our human nature is our own enemy. It seems we don't learn from earlier mistakes. Perhaps their is an escape with 'spaceship earth'. Floor's voice is full of emotion, care and is absolutely angelic. Is'nt it?

I think the point the song is making is that if we fail to save our Earth now because of writing the future generations and whoever comes after them will remember our failings. And they will blame us for it. History books are already filled with heroes and villains but they are also filled with those who failed to act when they should have. And you must now think which side of history you want to be on. And I think the name procession refers to that inactivity. We are just blindly going on with the mass while the planet is dying around us. And as such we act as an enabler for it and will be blamed for it. We have to stop and think our actions and how we need to be rmembered. "The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing." -Edmund Burke

Wow, what a wonderful and great reaction to this beautiful song. And what a powerful message it contains. You also might want to check a new single of Floor. It's a solo-project she did for the charity of War Child. The link contains the song sung in Dutch but if you click on aoutomatic translation you will see the english wording. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/ptR2lK2J0M-3lWQ.html. I think it's great that both Nightwish and Floor are so socially involved / committed and using their name and fame to draw attention to the weaknesses in our present society.

Our kin, as in the continuation of us. At some point, homo sapiens sapiens will cease to exist due to time and evolution. We will become them and they will inadvertently be us, not the same, but kin. From the previous masterpiece of Nightwish ‘The greatest show on earth’ “Forebearer of what will be, Scions of the Devonian sea” That sentence sums it up perfectly. We are a part of what will become as we are also descendants of the first vertebrates whom migrated from sea to land in the Devonian era. So your thoughts on the first breaths seem spot on to me. Tuomas never cease to amaze me.

There are also some other references to the _"Planet of the Apes"_ like _"our kin"_ in the end of song and the narrator telling _"after all, we should've never appeared"_ with a human skeleton on the background just after mentioning _"sapien"._ Because there is also mentioned _"Harvest"_ which could mean the extinction of human beings, it could mean that there is a clue to the name of another song in the album. Consider that perhaps _"Pan"_ is a reference to scientific name of chimpanzee, _"Pan troglodytes"_ as there is also another skeleton in the video which looks a bit like a skeleton of chimpanzee.

Thank you for this! This song was love at first listen for me. 🖤 Brings me to tears, with the beautiful melody, Floor’s voice and the lyrics. And I can not understand why this song is considered by many the weakest of the album. To be honest it really annoys me, that it is that easily brushed off.

Between you and Guylain Prince (former drummer turned Franciscan Friar) we have a totally new understanding of this album. Thank you for sharing your wisdom, although this particular song seemed to overwhelm you a bit. Perhaps you need to react , then pause, and spend whatever time you need to think what you need to say, before posting. Anyway, always look forward to your reactions.

At 15:10 you search for the titel and it's Charles Darwin book from dutch company/bookshop called: Gebroeders E. & M. Cohen. images.app.goo.gl/uLcYAkGBrVQLYhL17 The last book from that familyowned bookshop was "Equality for All" by Edward Bellamy, This marvelous book is the sequel to Bellamy's Looking Backward, his utopian novel of several years earlier, where a young man falls asleep in 1887 and wakes in a utopian year 2000, where all social ills are solved. This novel continues the thread of his utopian vision. Equality begins when Julian West returns to the year 2000 to continue his education. The book describes an ideal society in that year.
