A very spot-on description of Emppu. After all, only virtuoso can work the magic of an instrument with such ease that he can goof around meanwhile. And truth be it, Emppu is not the only virtuoso of the band. Tuomas, the composes, songwriter, and mastermind is something quite special, as well. My mother (classical education on the piano and organ) made after listening to several of their songs and dissecting the lyrics to really understand the meaning behind them the following, very interesting observation "This is a mind that probably works closes to that of Mozart in music or van Gogh in painting arts as we could ever hope to witness a second time."
@bigg2988

Very rare company indeed, except that Tuomas Holopainen is deeper than Mozart seems to have been (as a person) for most of his life... Mozart was an unmitigated genius, Tuomas is rather a poet / philosopher. And probably (hopefully) he's not as raw as van Gogh. Although "The Poet and the Pendulum" or "Master Passion Greed" came close in their disturbingly vivid colors.

@@bigg2988Perhaps I should elaborate more on my m others perception of these two artists. To my mother, both did not just make art, they "felt" art. She has a great reverence for both. In her perception, Mozarts music is more than just the play from note to note, spinning a song, it tells a tale all by itself, following a system that is detached from the musical theory of its day and even of centuries after. And similarly, she felt that van Goghs way of painting was not just capturing a moment visually, but telling how things came to be in that very place. For her, the "Starry Night" was not just a visual impression of a starry night that van Gogh saw. To her, she felt that van Gogh saw these stars "scream" at him from various distances, and he "felt" the torrents of space and time thrashing across the sky. I know this may sound somewhat "drug-infused", but to her, this kind of expressions are the only reasonable explanation how these things could be perceived by the mind of a single human being.

@@ServantOfOdin Thank you man. Deep respect for your mother as not everyone can get off the ground, or break the glass surface, and sense what it is in the art that makes it different from a pastime, or an observation. True art HAS to be out of the ordinary, to lead somewhere and not merely follow. In that, she is correct about Mozart, and more so about van Gogh. They had extremely keen perception and gift of expression to transcend the "norms" of the time. Being, at the core, very different men. I was pointing at their individuality: the apparently unconcerned gambler Mozart, with music seemingly seeping out of him without visible effort, and the misunderstood loner van Gogh. Tuomas is not easily comparable to them as a being, but in his "feeling" of art there must be a unity with other "ocean souls" out there.

@@bigg2988 True indeed, Tuomas is a much more integrated person than both Mozart and van Gogh were. And I also agree about the connection that these Ocean Souls must have, rare as though they may be, because not only drawing on similar forms of expression and even building upon eachothers powers in some form or the other is something you just don't do on a fancy. And looking at Nightwish songs through the time, you cans ee that Tuomas was always working with at least two layers of meanings. "Angels fall First" is not less intricate as "FantasMic" or "Eva". There are many great musicians, songwriters and composes out there (Jari Mäenpää from Wintersun or Chris Johnsson from Therion), but Tuomas is something that so far, none was able to compete with, especially on a long term.

You are right. Many of Nightwish's songs are of the "healing" type, justly called like this in the Gospel world. We sometimes say "soul soothing". With Nightwish, you also find another type of song : a "kick in the a..." anthem. We don't listen to each of these at the same time, in the same disposition. Both can be useful. You are so right when you say : so many layers to explore.

I have been a fan and friends with Nightwish since 1999, listening to your reactions has given me a new perspective on the band. I am now seeing Tuomas as the genius he is, and he is more than that. It's the way his mind works composing the music and putting the lyrics to the music in such a way that they ttug at your heart and soul. Nightwish is not just a band but an entity unto themselves. Nightwish wasand Tuomas were put on this earth as a gift to all, and to give us a musical outlet to express our inner selfes. I am now relooking at all their albums, and it is in the early ones also, just not as defined as in Human::Nature. You have become my all time favorite as far as reaction videos, you don't just react you analyze from a spiritual, Philosophical, and musical viewpoint, and you add the Theological view which gives a totally different view of the art form that is NIGHTWISH Thank you

Emppu is not anymore Brother Firetribe´s guitarist. This year February he step down and Roope Riihijärvi is now officially their guitarist. Emppu said he is too busy with Nightwish, cannot be same time in two bands. This is what band said officially: "Emppu steps down from the active role as a guitarist of Brother Firetribe due to lack of time. Simple as that, no drama, no fuss. Everyone understands the magnitude of a beast called Nightwish and all of us want to see them go conquer the world. Or two. What a band. With that said, he’s still our brother, stays in the team and you can actually hear him do his magic on the new album too. We got extremely lucky with having Roope Riihijärvi to step in and save our asses from doing nothing, which really wasn’t an option. This band is too much fun to stop now. On with the show, feel the burn!"

You reacted to this song as enthusiastically as I watched your reaction, having waited for you to reach this song ever since I found this fantastic video series. This is the song of which most of its essence lies in the lyrics and Floor's very emotional delivery of the words. The message permeates everything in the song. It's not a song with a real chorus but most just continuous verses, just like the name says. The gradual intensity of the music also shows that the procession of creation and life keeps building on what came before. Those two things deliver a nice, small paradox in that the continuation of the same also amounts to going somewhere new. All we creatures are DNA, but the combinations will create endless forms most beautiful. As said, Tuomas' great creation is helped so much from Floor's delivery of the words. She is not just the powerful Valkyrie of metal, she can also sing with such tenderness and vulnerability and put so much emotion behind the words she is singing. Despite that this song doesn't have any grandiose parts for the singer, like Shoemaker did, this does really feel like a song to showcase Floor. I eagerly await the analysis video.

"Tasteful Virtuoso" is the absolute best definition of Emppu. He looks like a little hobbit or clown but he's one of the most intelligent guitar player out there. He has quite a few solos, but they all are very tasteful but not too showy. And he maintains all the time the guitar sound wall, so you don't find any lacking of guitars on Nightwish tracks ever. Well, it came out quite spontaneous, but the more I thought of that, the better it sounded. I don't know if you noticed: he often plays a little line, very discrete, with some of Troys solos. Just to give a little support. The instruments played by Troy are very difficult to stabilize. they can sound very differently according to the dryness or the dampness of the climate, etc. By doing that, he makes sure that Troy's line sounds perfectly on pitch, without losing the 'organic sound' of the Englishman's instruments. Being deeply at the service of the band's artistic proposition. To me it is the sign of a great artist.

Your enthusiasm is contageous! At last a true Emppu fan! He works so hard in the background. He may be mischievous, but he doesn't mis a note (you can even see him fretting a chord while taking a drink mid-song at Wacken). He says "in his old age he does not feel the need to show off as much", but I Iong to hear a new solo from him, maybe in the next album! One thing I have noticed as a pattern is that Tuomas likes to change his music sound to something more electronic (in the sense that it needs electricity) and heavier any time he introduce mankind to the story. "We have been here a while" ... and one day will not be. Told to us by "those that will follow". I knew that you would love this track! I now find it interesting to see how Tuomas will approach the NEXT album. In "Noise" he warns "beyond the human horizon, something terrifying sleeps". In Harvest and Procession (as in The Greatest Show on Earth) he reminds us that our (species) time is finite. In Procession a 3rd person voice narrates almost "back in time" to us. "We remember....our kin...aeons ago". What is it that follows our species? AI? genetically changed or cybernetic "transhumanity"? Perhaps he will answer, perhaps he will leave it to us to interpret....as always!

I still like the motif of an *intelligence* that survives us, but taken as a full set of lyrics, I now read that the observer was there throughout our history (unless you go with a very poetic interpretation of a future party picturing what it might have been like to be human, based on their archeology of us). Floor : "in (the song) Procession, there is a message sent back to earth from a species like us but there’s no us any more we’ve been extinct. And it wants to tell our story. When Tuomas told us this, when I’d been singing it for a while, oh I could barely sing it after that, so beautiful, it touched me so profoundly."

One thing I know for sure about Tuomas. He sometimes play tricks; he likes to give "p-art of the information" to the fans. The whole album "Human:||: Nature" as a witness : it is almost the opposite of what he said (not a concept album). I always say : yes and no, this and that, when it comes to Tuomas. Clever man. Brilliant.

You're so right, Guylain. Emppu is such a goof, even as he slays anything the song calls for, apparently without a shred of selfish ego, a humble clown, whose mastery of his craft graces the performance just enough. And the whole band seems so very humble, a very endearing quality in rock superstars. And their all pretty goofy, fun-loving people, who love what they do, and are so good at it that they can afford to clown around a little and still utterly slay it.

I love the part of Father Pikaia, i assume based on the short SF story "Worlds Enough, and Time" from Harry Torteldove describing a family space travellers in the cambrium period . On their vacation they visited planets and in this book describing their visit to planet earth. At the end of their visit to earth the daughter had an aquarium but by accident all enviromental unit of the aquarium died just the animals survived. Daughter convinced (against all rules) the Father to keep the animals alive by dropping the animals in the earth ocean. One of the animals was Pikaia. And after they left it resulted in an explosion of live in the oceans of earth. Maybe nice background for the ones who are intrested. I know how much Tuomas love this kind of Science Fiction, so i am almost sure he read this short SF story.

@@GuylainPrince I guess we could be quite close to our analysis, as you already said don't worry earth will survive, new beings will be born. For me Tuomas as an atheist could believe in something in the universe coming from that big universe to that little blue dot planting new DNA and create new life. (like Father Pikaia the time traveller did 35 million years ago, never take it literally with respect to Tuomas hahaha). Who knows maybe your celestial beings (more religious) can be replaced by something unknown like my Father Pikaia. Cannot wait to listen to your review.

Don't hold back my wonderful friend. We came to feel this music through your heart and soul. The look in your eyes is priceless! The ending did show extinct human. It was represented by the video screen cracked and broken. A leftover relic from a bygone species. You called it. Can't wait for you breakdown on this one. It is sung from a very unusual perspective. "We are, singers of the gone" We are, we were, and will not be We remember, father Pikaia Gave the way, as along came Sapien We have been here a while At the end of Pi, as along came harvest We were there and will remember mankind Our kin Aeons ago

WOW ! I did not see the broken glass. As for the human being as an extinct species, I got that when I made the subtitles on the [ANALYSE] video. It was too late to include it. As for the meaning of the song, what do you think of the following summary : By the bed of a dying planet, here is the lamentation of a Celestial choir mourning at all the departed, and especially the soon-to-be-extinct race that accelerated the last harvest. Does that make sense to you? The breakdown tomorrow.

@@GuylainPrince I think you are right on target. However, one of the most intriguing details is the storytelling perspective of who is singing this song? "We are, singers of the gone". Who are "We"? Oh I'm so happy I found channel! I'm commenting prematurely as I've only listened to 1.5 of your videos. I'm really looking forward to seeing what is your interpretation of and how you will deal with, if at all, with the worldview they set forth. They as a band have made some explicitly atheistic and antitheistic statements which I found so unfortunate, it is as if they cut the wings of or self-capped the experience ("this far, no further"). I understand it form one perspective but find it paradoxical when it is so obvious Tuomas lives in these patterns, symbolical, musical, visual, emotional... Anyway, I hope I don't spoil anything for you, I'm looking forward to you showing me they are being tasteful about this and I hope you can give some angle from which to approach this issue fruitfully and lovingly. God bless.

I am not sure if Tuomas is atheist. I think he is more "agnostic" : he does not know if there is God or not. So, he keeps is writing open. I am sad, yes, that he stated few very harsh things on some "religious behaviours", but I make them within the Church. I agree with most of them. He has an open mind to endlessness, both in time and space, even if he gives a limited interpretation of it. But I can cope with that.

Also: what might be the significance of the title of the book we see around 13:43, which seems to be the Dutch edition of the "The Origin of Species"? Why in Dutch?

@GuylainPrince
@GuylainPrince 4 жыл бұрын
The Lyrics are complicated and can be interpreted from different points of view. Here is how I make sense. The "We", a little bit like in Shoemaker, are personified planets and the moon. In Antiquity, they were considered gods or, at least, spiritual beings. Of course, Tuomas does not believe that ; but he uses this literary device to make a "choir of mourners" out of these celestial beings. To my knowledge, this is a very "Greek" posture. A celestial choir mourns about everything that happened on the blue planet, the past "harvests" and specifically the one about to come. They already mourns the "departed to be". Within a celestial time-frame, it will happen in a near future, very soon. A little bit like mourning by the bed of a person in palliative care. They enjoyed familiarity with the human race. They already regret their familiarity. That would be my guess. All of this is, of course, is open to discussion. Does that make sense to you?

Thank you for another great analysis. You struggled with the same questions I did. Who is the narrator? I think everything else will follow that answer but I still I still don't have the answers yet. Considered the science fiction avenue but I don't get the feel that he would promote the idea. Together now may mean simply that man is with the rest of the living in facing extinction. The end of Pi? Pi is an endless number. Is it a symbol of and "endless " procession that is ending Or has a greater intelligence completed the calculation. I don't think that the two cracked phones at the beginning and the end are inconsequential. I have seen Toumas say these are not pieces of a theme but we see again and again ideas from one song end up in another. The two phones bring me back to Noise and I don't remember the exact words at the moment but roughly "Something terrifying on the ?horizon waits. Thanks again. I always get thought provoking insights.
@GuylainPrince
@GuylainPrince 4 жыл бұрын
You got it for the phone. The end of all life is the "something terrifying, beyond human horizon". As for the "we", my two solutions are fully satisfying for me, or I should say, this perspective is satisfying to make sense of the song. We are being watched by a "choir" of people caring for the earth and the human race. Their age is tremendous, since they are their since the beginning of life. As loving parents, they watch the birth, the struggles and the near-end of their kin. There is regrets, like all of us have when we assist to the death of a loved one. For me, that it enough.

Ha ha ha ! In fact, I think that Neil Peart and Geddy Lee have the recognition they deserve. They are simply among the very best of their profession. But for Lifeson, under the shadow of two recognized virtuosi of their craft, might be overlooked. A bit like Emppu. In fact, it is the same with Michel Cusson. He plays with two accomplished and recognized musicians (Brochu and Caron). Him too, we tend to overlook them.

At 13:43 in your video (then they saw the moon, and found caring) there's an image of the Dutch version of Darwin's "origin of species" ("het ontstaan der soorten"). I think this whole song is (again) a reflection of the "Laudato Si" / the encyclical from 2015. It makes the same appeal to take care of nature.
@GuylainPrince
@GuylainPrince 4 жыл бұрын
I didn't know if it was Dutch or German, when I shot the [ANALYSE] video, but that makes a lot of sense. Compared to Laudato Si, I would say that both take a very prophetic stance in calling to action, to realize what is going on. The "look and feel" of the song is grimier than the Papal document, but I think it is a "literary device", pretty much of the same type used by the biblical prophets. Painting reality in black to initiate emotional/willful /active response. Laudato Si is more in the line of a "teaching document" in troubled times, asking for action.

@@GuylainPrince Well, Tuomas doesn't have the "burden" of representing anyone. If he (and the band) wishes to deliver a strong message, he can do so. And we're also further in time (and we're still doing too little, with also a lot of opposition thinking we're doing to much for nothing). The band delivers a clear message, they make a strong statement. Not only by words, but also by their actions (by supporting World Land Trust for example, and even this night with Floor publishing a new song for WarChild). I guess not everybody likes those statements. It's the freedom an artist has however, where a Pope probably has more difficulties to find a balance in his words.

We are way past due "paying attention to everyone's own sensibilities" and opinion. There is a global awareness to raise. Artists, sometimes, feel useless in the great theatre of our lives, having the impression that they cannot contribute to the debate. My opinion is exactly the opposite : songs can be vector of a new understanding, a new behaviour and a new imagination. To take the language of "Pan", imagination here comes to our rescue and helps us to imagine a world from another perspective.

Hello Guylain my friend, I loved your reaction to this magnificent song. It's the one song on the album that touched my emotions more than the others for some reason. Just the concept of some other intelligent life in the future singing about humans, just blew my mind. I was surprised at the begining of your video when you said you hadn't watched any of the Nightwish concerts on KZfaq. I really recommend that you watch them all. There are some spectacular performances like "The Poet And The Pendulum" from Wembley 2016 and "The Greatest Show On Earth" from Tampere 2015. Those two songs are a must see for any Nightwish fan. I'm not sure if you are aware but Nightwish did a short video introducing each song on the album. For this song it was Tuomas that introduced it. Here's the link: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/qK-fhJCTtZzciac.html. Listening to music is, for me, a ritual. I have hi-fi headphones, and I have a good chair. I close my eyes. Unless I am at a concert, I really LISTEN, closely. In practice, I have two DVD of concerts (Phil Collins and another one). And I don't have the reflex of 'looking" at music. Not anymore.

@@GuylainPrince I understand your reasoning and sometimes it's best to just hear a song and not be distracted by the visuals of a performance. With Nightwish though, because they have had two previous singers to Floor and there are no studio versions of the older songs performed by Floor, the only way to hear them by her is by watching the concerts. This is especially true for "The Poet And The Pendulum". Originally this song was sung by Anette on "Dark Passion Play" but when Floor performs it live, it elevates the song to another level entirely. If you know the back story to the song, when Floor sing it, it tears your heart out. It's the only song I can honestly say had me crying like a baby! It is something you have to experience. You won't be disappointed and you'll wonder why you didn't listen to it earlier! I look forward to your analysis of "Procession" and I'm curious as to what you are going to make of the next song "Tribal"! Take care and stay safe. Cela est particulièrement vrai pour "The Poet And The Pendulum".
