This song is about Eugene Shoemaker. He was one of the first Planetary geologist and he helped prove that craters on the Earth and Moon were made by meteor impacts. He discovered a comet that was monitored by NASA when it crashed into Jupiter. He was employed by NASA to train the astronauts in what they need to look for on the moon and was being trained as an astronaut when they discovered he had Addison's disease and therefore couldn't go. He died in a car crash in Australia and some of his ashes were carried on a probe which was to map the moon and then crash onto the moon. He is the only person to have his ashes on the moon. The poem was carved onto the urn that carried his ashes.

Yes, she is. Saw them in Massachusetts last month and it was amazing. As for musical training - the obligatory grade school music class recorder lessons. Tried clarinet but discovered that allergies and sinus issues meant I couldn't manage to breathe through my nose well enough to properly play wind instruments. I did do choir all through grade school, high school, and university. I wasn't great, but I wasn't bad back then. Age has taken a toll on my voice, though, and I've lost quite a bit of range at the top end over the last 10 years or so. Very frustrating to be singing along with something I've sung hundreds of times in the past, only to find I can no longer hit that high note.

I heard her nail it in Los Angeles, and who doesn't expect her to? Her five "brothers" stand in line behind her, like Guardians of the Valkyrie Queen, as she closes the concert with Ad Astra. You leave wanting to hear more ... but what can follow? She's just a gift to mankind in every way.

So ,... Eugene Merle Shoemaker (April 28, 1928 - July 18, 1997) was an American geologist. He co-discovered Comet Shoemaker-Levy 9 with his wife Carolyn S. Shoemaker and David H. Levy. This comet hit Jupiter in July 1994: the impact was televised around the world. Shoemaker also studied terrestrial craters, such as Barringer Meteor Crater in Arizona, and along with Edward Chao provided the first conclusive evidence of its origin as an impact crater. He was also the first director of the United States Geological Survey's Astrogeology Research Program. He was killed in a car accident while visiting an impact crater site in Australia. After his death, some of his ashes were carried to the Moon with the Lunar Prospector mission. The spoken word in this is done by Tuomas Holopainen's Wife Johanna Kurkela ( a section from Romeo And Juliet is also carved Eugene's urn ). "Shoemaker" has become a favorite song of NASA's scientific community. Tuomas has a deep inclination towards science and this is reflected in many of his plays. This ensured the entry of Nightwish into the history books of science, several discoveries in the field being named after them. These new discoveries include: Alpenglow Rockshelter: Archaeological site named after Nightwish Song. Tanidromites Nightwishorun: New Crab species. Sciophila Holopaineni: New species of Mosquito found in Finland. Ophiomitrella Floorae: New species of Cretaceous brittle star named after Floor Jansen. Tmesisternus floorjansenae: new species of beetle named after Floor. Song from Human. :II: Nature and it is a Masterful Album !!!! NWSU 🤘😎🤘. And I am A Bass Player and little bit Piano and saxophone 🙃.

This song gets better and better each time you listen to it. Tuomas wrote this song in tribute to Eugene Shoemaker. He was a planetary geologist who dedicated his professional life to our understanding of planetary geology and asteroids (comet Shoemaker- Levy is named after him) Eugene had a lifelong desire to go to space and during the testing required to enable him to embark upon the rigorous training it was discovered he had a disease that precluded him from realising his dream. Tragically he was killed in a car accident in Australia whilst in pursuit of new geologic formations. NASA were fully aware of his lifelong desire to go to space and made the unprecedented offer to transport his ashes to the moon where he remains the only human being whose remains reside outside the Earth. The beautiful operatic part Laudato si - Ad Astra “praise be to the stars” represents the blastoff from earth to his final resting place upon the moon. - such a wonderful and romantic tribute from Tuomas

I her spare time, Floor teaches blue whale calves deep diving.... You are right - it's an incredible difficult song to perform - and Floor does it live, at least as impressive as this (she is always better live!!). The full opera ending - Floor and Tuomas did ir several times in the Nightwish studio, before they were satisfied. And then Floor went home to Sweden - but on the way home, she didn't have the right gut feeling. She back home she listened again and again, reheased - went into her homestudio and recorded the ending with her new interpretation. Send it to Tuomas - blew him out of the roof - and this is the ending you here - and the one she performs live. It's a special opera technique she uses - NOT easy, but Floor is a perfectionist, and if that is what it takes - she will do it no matter what. Incredible song & performance. Next one is serious and xxxx's vulnerable voice are perfect to express how serious it is (Floor backings are superb)

Floor has said in a interview that she has been blessed with the lungs of a deep sea diver. This song was dedicated to Eugene Shoemaker who has some of his ashes on the moon in a urn in the crater that bears his name with a plaque with the quote from Shakespeare. 🇫🇮 👍 They had already sent the audio tracks to be mixed and mastered into the new album, but as a perfectionist, Floor wanted to try one more time with the operatic part st the end of this song. To be as relaxed as possible & have a better feel of the song, she recorded her vocals at her home studio in Sweden & also used the audio track with the choir already on it. I'd say she nailed the end of this song with her operatic vocals.

Every time I hear Floor go into full opera soprano at the end I face an uphill struggle to hold back the tears. Then you remember this is the woman who also metal growls, and does everything else in between, flawlessly. What a machine, what a woman!

As others have pointed out ... AURI is another project for Tuomas, together with Troy, his wonderfully talented wife Johanna and frequently Kai on percussion. It allows him to approach composition in a softer manner, and their work is simply gorgeous and deep. I cannot imagine a Nightwish fan not loving it. It would be very satisfying to watch you too react to AURI songs as well. They tend to be more like Shoemaker. Between Floor and Johanna, Tuomas has the most incredible pallet of colors with which to paint his masterpieces, and let's be certain about this ... they are all masterpieces. BTW: I'm an old drummer. Took lessons at 14, worked over the summer of 1968 at 15 to earn enough to buy a Ludwing drum kit which I still own. I was never very good, but I absolutely loved playing with a garage band we put together. Having issues with my hands, so I don't play anymore, except in my head. We ALWAYS play in our head, don't we?

Remember that Floor is a real soprano. And Tuomas is a real genius, then it is natural. Tuomas cooperates with London sinfonia orchestra and choir here. Nightwish do this in front of audience too. As a Finnish speaking it´s a wonder at least for me, that Tuomas is able to handle English so well with so many layers, meanings inside, a great poet. Greets from Finland. Take care.

As you will have discovered by now, the song is about Eugene Shoemaker and part of his ashes were carried to the moon, on the urn the Romeo and Juliet verse. His resting place is in the crater named after him, and during the last seconds of the clip Tuomas gives us an impression of the view from his grave: the earthset followed by the sunset (although the Shoemaker crater is more than 200 meters deep). The Laudato si is not really latin but a transition from latin to Italian, it is the title of a poem by Francis of Assisi meaning “praised art thou Lord; ad astra is latin meaning “(let’s go) to the stars” The instrument you can hear ar the beginning is the hammered dulcimer (look it up), not sure if it is played by Tuomas (real or a simulation by the keyboard) or that Troy is playing it.🤓

This entire album is a masterpiece of composition and performance. This is a mature Nightwish at the top of their game and Floor is - well, in Goddess mode throughout. Seeing her do this live is stunning and leaves you weak in the knees. This is conformation that Tuomas is a genius (as if we needed any more conformation). BTW - I'm a (retired) drummer/singer with more than 50 years of experience behind me and have played in many different bands and genres.

I think this song is more impactful if you know that it’s inspired by planetary geologist Eugene Shoemaker, the only human being whose remains are interred on the moon. The spoken word Shakespeare quote is read by Johanna Kurkela…Tuomas’ wife. She, Tuomas and Troy have another band called Auri…you should check them out, too.

Nice reaction. I won't repeat the background info I provided in your Noise reaction. Others will probably repeat it. One of my favorite lyrics is right at the beginning ."Now you've been tucked in for eternal earthrise and wonder" is in reference to Shoemaker's final resting place in the Shoemaker crater on the moon where he can watch the Earth rise and wonder in it's beauty. The rest of the lyrics liken him to a sailor and the moon as a ship sailing through the night and the desire of all humanity to sail out into that darkness and explore. The asteroids/meteorites during the breakdown are a homage to Shoemakers expertise in discovering and studying crater's created by asteroid impacts. Laudato Si Ad Astra means praise to the stars. I saw one interview early after the release where Floor said she was unsure if she would be able to sing this live because of it's difficulty but of course she did the hard work and has been singing this song in each show during the current tour. Nightwish has never performed live with an orchestra like Epica did for their 10th anniversary concert (Retrospect) but that would be so amazing. Top 5 Nightwish song for me and the epic ending with the vocals, music, and visuals moves me every time. Saw them live about a month ago and this song was so epic and even better in person. My only musical training was the obligatory recorder in music class in 3rd or 4th grade. I did try out for choir in 4th grade and didn't make it. My daughters when they were 4 would ask me not to sing along to the radio in the car because I was ruining the songs. Not much ability but I obviously love music and spend lots of time listening and exploring. Discovering reaction channels has been a really great way to get the music education I missed. They have expanded my musical knowledge and given me the ability to appreciate music in a much, much deeper way.

Its a requiem to Shoemaker , which Ashes are the only one on the moon since 1998 Lunar spacecraft carries ashes, special tribute to Shoemaker There could be no finer tribute to the legendary planetary geologist who said his greatest unfulfilled dream was to go to the moon. Tonight, the ashes of Eugene M. Shoemaker are to be launched in a memorial capsule aboard Lunar Prospector to the moon. The polycarbonate capsule, one-and-three-quarters inches long and seventh-tenths inch in diameter, is carried in a vacuum-sealed, flight-tested aluminum sleeve mounted deep inside the spacecraft. Around the capsule is wrapped a piece of brass foil inscribed with an image of a Comet Hale-Bopp, an image of Meteor Crater in northern Arizona, and a passage from William Shakespeare's enduring love story, "Romeo and Juliet": And, when he shall die, Take him and cut him out in little stars, And he will make the face of heaven so fine That all the world will be in love with night, And pay no worship to the garish sun.

The end of this song, the Laudato Si, is one of those that brings out ghe onions. One Nightwish fan has taken the screen name "Laudato Si Ad Astra" which I think is a wonderful tribute to the band, the song and the singer. I learned a little clarinet and piano (not much). My sister played Flute, violin, viola, organ, but her first instrument is voice. She has a degree in music. She has now retired to Winchester where she sings in the Cathedral and did for many years, going down from London for performances. She has worked with people like Richard Hickox and knows John Barry. Her partner is an orchestral oboist, bassoon player and a few other instruments.

"Laudato Si" (be praised) is a reference to the famous hymn of St. Francis of Assisi. Your 7:35 "..coming up for air" is a nice nod to George Orwell's lesser known work, described as "one man's attempt to recapture childhood innocence as war looms on the horizon". Which would be a fitting description of Tuomas' Nightwish ;) Cheers from Amsterdam!

Thanks for the video's. In answer to your question: was a lead vocalist in a semi-pro (professional attitude, but still needed a day job for most of the time because we played our own original music instead of taking the easy $ for playing covers) hard rock/metal band from '87 to '99. The only instrument I coud play (badly) was drums, but I had a good ear for music and was heavily involved in our live mix and studio production/mix and assisted in arrangements for some songs too. When I left, it meant the bass player (and main song writer) was the only original member remaining, and the band finally folded in 2014. We always worked hard to be the best we could, and put on a great show, and we also had a lot of fun. Great memories!

I love this song and the way Floor sings it blows me away every time. Many people already explained what the song is about so I won’t. About your question about people being in music and/or have any musical training I can say that I tried as a kid about 50 years ago. I really wanted to get into music but I didn’t have the patience! I had 1 piano lesson but was disappointed that I couldn’t play a boogie woogie immediately 😜 I had to learn to read the music and so on and practice a lot something I didn’t want to do. A bit later I tried again and had 1 guitar lesson but was disappointed again that I couldn’t play like Deep Purple immediately. 😜so that was the end of my musical career. 😜keep it up stay safe and healthy. 🇳🇱🫶🤘🌹💐

When adding the brilliance of the meaning behind the song... that's when you get the full scale of Tuomas and his song writing/composing excellence. Bill Morrison's comment below gives a basic breakdown of Eugene Shoemaker's incredible life's accomplishments... Explains the Earth and Moon imagery in the video... but using the Shakespeare quote from Romeo & Juliet that his wife had etched in the earn that transported his ashes to the Moon. References the "Earthrise" in the song that from Shoemaker's vantage point on the moon's southern region, he would be seeing the Earth rise on the horizon. His thought process is just amazing.

Good musicians and composers exist like sand in the desert, but then there are people like Tuomas who form a league of their own. Well, and then Nightwish has a second genius in its ranks - Floor! The combination of these two geniuses makes Nightwish something unique in this world and I am very happy that this art is gaining more fans from year to year.

Also, to answer your question, I've been playing instruments since age nine. As a teenager I played in numerous bands as a bass player. I was nominated for the position because my older brother had a pre CBS Fender Precision bass that I uses to steal to play gigs, until I could afford my own. All my siblings played guitar and/or bass. I can play many instruments. In the Nineties, I had two songs played on the radio for a local band showcase. That's my small claim to fame...lol.

Moon sure is lovely. Totally not being biased now ;-) Jokes aside, dont you just love Nightwish. You never know what the next song's gonna sound like. And personally I'm still enjoying following you on your journey through the Nightwish music library. For example, I've been watching reactions for many years, but lately (like last year or two) I've gotten more and more annoyed with most reactors constant hammering on the pausebutton. So I'm grateful that you dont ruin the songs with constant pausing, like I *really* appreciate that. And if the songs could speak they would say the same thing. After all, you only get ONE attempt at doing/listening to something for the first time. Why ruin your first impression by pausing 15 times during a 5min song. So again, I cant stress that enough, kudos and deep thanks for not 'ruining' the songs and your own experience. Keep up the good (actually great) work!

In case you don't do the whole Bio of Eugene Shoemaker, some of his ashes were actual placed on the moon by NASA after his passing, the piece of lyrics from Romeo and juliet was engraved on his urn. How did she do that? All Nightwish Army personnel know….. it’s because she is a Valkyrie Goddess. Before the Shakespeare it’s a good song. Very profound lyric, Floor perfect as always, Troy vocals very enriching. Shakespeare, from Romeo and Juliette, but very apt for the story being told. THEN……LAUDATO!!!!!! Story is that Floor not happy with the original studio recording. Worked on it at her home studio until satisfied. Still…. No way can it be done live. Perhaps it can after all? Story is that Floor does not regard ‘operatic’ as her favourite style, but anyone who has lost their Floorginity to the Goddess absolutely LOVES Floor operatic, so, Floor does it live after all.

They can do it live. I saw it myself. Amazing.

Eugene Shoemaker was researching craters in Australia. He couldn't become an astronaut for health reasons, so concentrated on planetary sciences. He is most famous to the general public for discovering a comet, which the whole world (that had TV, or internet) witnessed splitting up and crashing into Jupiter: Shoemaker-Levy 9, July 1994. Many staff from NASA love this one, respect. Romeo and Juliet, thanks Will. Not a musician :(

They have been performing this live, and Floor has been killing it. There's no good quality live version yet (not live in front of an audience at any rate), but check out this fancam footage from last year: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/hJuCadRjrNm4l3U.html Noise also sounds great live: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/iNuCaqpl36zHoZ8.html And Tribal: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/rJmYrK6pys7Ho2Q.html These are all recorded on mobile phones, but they still give you an idea.

To your question. I play guitar and piano. Never anymore than at some bonfire or family gatherings. Then I also paint. Mostly oil, landscapes. Had my paintings compared to the "highwaymen". Yet I'm a construction worker by trade.

Story I heard was that floor was not happy with the vocals that were recorded in session, so re-recorded them at her home studio , and that is what is on the album. Floor is SERIOUS about her vocals ...and Thuomas is serious about pushing floor to ever greater performances. Also Troy contributed vocals to this one as well as did I beleive the spoken word part was Thuomas's wife. Not 100% on that but I think that is what I heard.

That's right what you heard. It's Johanna, Tuoma's wife.

Tuomas wife Johanna did the Shakespeare reading part you should check out his side projects including with his wife The life and times of Scrooge Mc Duck. I was around bands since I was 12 and use to set up the bands gear. I later trained at Music production audio engineering. I learned the usual wind instruments at school like the recorder and the xylophone as well and keyboards. I later learned the guitar and bass and percussion/drums. And vocals. I formed a band for a short while. And use to love writing lyrics. I'm still not the best at reading sheet music like I can count OK but it takes time until I translate it. While others make it look easy lol.

Wolfman hates reading music - has always played by ear. He is dabbling in production right now! Bless you - Suesue

Sorry guys, but you obviously had already reacted when I left a comment two days ago about Shoemaker, note NOT The Shoemaker. I see there are already lots of comments so won't bother to repeat them. Enjoy the rest of this album and maybe play the second disc as a single long reaction with the fan-made video which is stunning.

For each song from the Human Nature album... you need to do some little research...prior to listening the songs. Music is about humans discovering a beat, noise it's about our mondane issues and phone distractions... Shoemaker is about Eugene Shoemaker.... the planetary scientist, Harvest is about our impending need of dying, How is the Heart is about human empathy, Pan is about human curiosity, Procession is about humanity's stay on Earth... so on ans so forth... Please do some proper research in order to grasp the entirety of Nightwish's songs... otherwise you will miss out. And it's a pitty to miss out Tuomas's genius.

"The" Shoemaker ? Nope, just Shoemaker. Y'know, you all being American should really know a bit about this very important American. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eugene_Merle_Shoemaker
