I have found Tuomas' lyrics generally neither condemn nor promote any beliefs. If anything they are supposed to make you think and form your own idea. And that's the whole point of this song. There are institutions that would indoctrinate you from childhood to believe only their version of the truth rather than allow you to discover your own with free thinking. Isn't every child worthy of a better tale?

Hi Souls. This is a beautiful song and one of my Nightwish favorites. It is not a slam on personal faith, but it is a hit on those organized religions that prey upon followers to fill their coffers. Nothing to do with God, but everything to do that those who would profit off of God. Thank you for this reaction and don't worry Chrisy. All will be well.

Mainly composed by Marko and lyrics are Tuomas and Marko together. Marko is very clearly visible in the lyrics. Tuomas is very poetic, uses lots of symbolisms and speaks a lot between the lines. Marko is a lovely guy, but he is outspoken when he starts talking about serious things and he is especially outspoken about authority figures. They have also said that the lyrics of this song have been carefully reviewed with the whole band.

It is Tuomas' take organized religion, they are not about worshipping the devil. Tuomas believes in science. Male necrocracy is following a dead man. He was pointing out hypocrisies that exist, as religions have brought about world wars. My mother is a devout Christian, and I am a true blue atheist. She tells me all the time she is praying for me and I tell her thank you. I have been both Southern Baptist and Roman Catholic, in my case you would say I have lost all faith in a supreme being, long before Nightwish. Tuomas and Troy have identified themselves as non-religious. I knew that I would have to say something when this song came up. They do not worship God or the devil as they do not believe in their existence. Hard to worship beings you have no belief in. Tuomas' somewhat rant via this song was not towards believers, but towards the people/governments that use and manipulate religions to control the masses.

@@deathworlder100 Tuomas is from "religious" home. His grandpa was a vicar/parson (not sure if those are right tittles in english... Boss-priest 😁) So he is very familiar with christianity, I assume. And if I'm remembering right, he was quite "spiritual" when he was younger.

@@deathworlder100 Tuomas appreciates the power themes that encapsulate many stories from the New Testament. In his younger days he also had a very poetic style of writing lyrics that was not very “on the nose” so to speak. So he will often include references to powerful literary works in his lyrics as a way to convey a atmosphere and feeling as he tells his story. It’s not just biblical references, it’s also fiction (Stephen King, Patrick Rothfuss, Tolkien, Snow White and many other fairy tales, Finnish mythology, etc.) as well as non-fiction poets/essayists/journalists (Whitman, Thoreau, Dawkins, Darwin, etc.). Using biblical references as a form of rhetoric to convey a meaning is exactly that: a way to communicate.

Several others have explained what's going on here, so I won't repeat it. Other than this is not an attack on personal Faith or beliefs, but an attack on those who exploit people's beliefs. Regardless which faith. Cristianity, Islam, Judaism, Buddhism, Hinduism, etc.. It doesn't matter in this song.

I was a bit perplexed at the onset...it is my realization that we have a creator God....He sent his son to save people 😀...we are not here to condemn good people, If any of us had all the answers we would be "gods"...I know my limited intellect...my parents rarely took me to church. I wasn't born in the Bible belt...I found Christ on my own. As a Child I prayed for dreams to show me the truth. Anyone who is good and searching for the truth I have no reason to condemn them. I love this song also...There is so much eschewed in the world. We have to sift fact from fiction. I ❤️ LOVE...GOOD PEOPLE. My beliefs system was build around trust and prayers answered. Therefore I am Christian. Jesus wants us to love. If love were only reserved for the perfect and all knowing , then love would be nonexistent. We are awestruck at the amazing musicianship of Nightwish. And love rocking out with you good people I have family members that are agnostic, I love them regardless of their beliefs. There is a big difference between good and bad people. This song says the children deserve better.. better than the bad, cruel abusive mistreatment some suffer...I have an acquaintance Dzen that helps the tortured and abused Children across the pond, she is Lithonian, cruelty and abuse is what I am against. I don't have to drive to far down the road to see what Tuomas and Marco are speaking out against. The song is loaded. The lyrics are about religion in general. It's criticizing those who hold power for scaring people with afterlife to keep them in line and doing as told. It's about newborns who have no choice but to assume the religion of their mothers. It's about the spiritual need of humans being abused by organized religion. That's what I'm getting at least, knowing that Tuomas has a sort of secular and scientific view of this world.

I love how Tuomas rocks out on this song. And Kai is absolutely killing it on the drums. My take on this song is it is an indictment of the fantasies and lies we are told, and that we tell ourselves, to justify the evil things we do, or allow others to do. The last line of the chorus (Every child worthy of a better tale) is a plea to realize what is happening and reject it. The necrocracy is a reference to governments who recognize a dead man as its head. Think North Korea, the Soviet Union, Venezuela. So I guess you can say it is a protest song against accepting the false narrative that is so present in life. Stay safe, God bless, and keep rocking.

I think the lyric-question _is_ relevant, as Tuomas always also has a "story to tell you". And I think this suggestion was a bit of a trick for you, as you are religious. I think it is about the dark side of religions. Some have been offended. But as for how I see it, it is always a good thing to be ready to look the history and truth straight in the eyes for not to make the same mistakes again; Everything human have invented/ "knows", can and will be used both for good and for the ugly. And religions are one "tool" that also has been used that way. It also can be a frightening, strong tool, as it sometimes includes a thought of just believing and obeying. So it can be a tool to contol the masses. As it is used, right in the moment we speak,to try to make people attack another country, kill, and feel they have no option, or they're doomed. But I think the history of this excact moment will tell that if you did obey, you will have ended on the dark side. So being true to your soul and values and never giving the power over you to another human being blindly, is the only way to stay humane. Human beings make mistakes. Grand mistakes.

From infancy people are being scared with stories about the eternal afterlife in hell. DECERNING THE HOLY FROM THE UNHOLY IS THE KEY.....Angels are ministering messengers...the fallen angels are demons. This song is, unlike what many people might think, not so much only about religion itself, but more about the abuse of power within the different religions and governments. 'Necrocrasy' is, to quote Wiktionary: "A form of government where a dead person is recognised as its head, usually a deceased former leader." Or, to quote William Bennett Munro's The Invisible Government: "A form of government by the graveyards. Old precepts and phrases are handed down from one generation to another; they become part of a nation's heritage." Certain religious and governmental leaders worldwide put the living fear (in older days witchcraft for example, think of the Salem witch trials) into people first before showing a so called "enlightened" way to rid people of that same fear, which in fact they never do. In doing so 'They' manouvre themselves in a dictatorial position, which automatically makes people into slaves. And all under the cloak of "the greater good". 'Tribal poetry' can be interpreted as 1 book or text that tells us how to be and who to be. 'Kiss the ring, praise and sing' is forcing people to acknowledge 'Their' power. This is just my personal perception of the lyrics. Of course, to each their own. 😉😄

Guys, I know that in American circles it's not appropriate to talk about politics and religion. We don't do it here in Europe either, yet an artist has not only the freedom but almost the obligation to speak uncomfortable truths too. And I am with Tuomas and Marko here. I believe in God and I believe that there was never a greater human being than Jesus Christ. But just think about it. The Nazarene kept silent for the first 30 years of his life, and when he began to openly teach, the first word he said was "blessed". And yet look what organized Christianity has made of that! It has devolved into blind obedience, authority and discipline fetish, oppression, intolerance, a drooling adulation of the tribal rules of the Iron Age Middle East. They always seem to know who does God hate, who are the sinners and in order to put power behind their fetish and to enforce their laws upon the whole of society they made a criminal deal with the worst kind of politicians. Most Christians today define themselves as Conservatives, forgetting that it was the Conservatives who murdered Jesus. Every word that Caiaphas says according to the Gospels is quintessentially Conservative! Jesus never took a political stance. Not even once, in fact he made it clear that he wants to stay away from it, that worldly power doesn't concern him at all. I think if he came back indeed one day, he would recognize himself and his teachings in extremely few people if any, and the overwhelming majority of Christians would not be among those few. Their story is indeed a weak fantasy and yes, it's sad that their children are raised to believe that fantasy to be the absolute, ultimate truth, to the point that they become unable to stop and think, and realize what it really is.
@atlasgsd

I read the lyrics - weak fantasy - as a take against indoctrination. In any form. Use your own thoughts and adopt a critical mindset to what happens around you. Whether you believe in religion or not - most Scandinavians are not religions (definitely not the swedes - and we haven't been in war for over 200 years and we hold human rights very high, so we are not really the bad people on the planet). A person should, no matter your beliefs, be judge by their actions. And if there is a God, that force will also judge people by their actions, not by their belief system. Nightwish as a band is a force that makes the world a far better place. The power in that is humongous.

Fun to watch. This one is always a bit of a big bite for people of strong faith. The denial towards any criticism against their beliefs. Even people of christian faith should see all the abuse performed in the name of religions. Sadly everything in the song is true. Religions ARE witchcraft, nercrocracy and tribal poetry. That said - I think I read somewhere Tuomas commenting weak fantasy as a time when he was a different person in a different mental state. I assume this is about being angry and frustrated towards the world. Now I guess they are still secular agnostic scientists, but in a more discreet way. As someone said - they seem to be some very empathic and caring people. This will also give a different view to their other lyrics. They are trying to tell people to enjoy the amazing universe without clouding ones mind with beliefs and other fake facades like social media. Interesting to see your possible lyrics breakdown video. In their performance of The Greatest Show on Earth, they include excerpts from Darwin and the atheist, Richard Dawkins. Mr. Dawkins appears at the end of their show in Webley Arena to speak the words from his book. Although I don't agree with his worldview, the music is next level.

It is a member of the long-necked lute family, with a round body with a flat top and a long neck with a fretted fingerboard.). Marko is Playing an Warwick Infinity / Panthera Double neck Bass and Guitar ( It is called THE BEAST). This song is against organized religions based on tribal religious texts, especially The Bible, it's not against personal faith in some Deity. However, one should realize that all those religious texts are & have been interpreted and used to justify unimaginable cruelties, persecution, discrimination etc., the worst being the idea that man is separate from nature & by some divine right above all other lifeforms, which explains the current almost catastrophic state of our planet. lyrics are spot on - so many fractures in our world have a root in the fantasy that each of the religions/sects/whatever are THE ONE way. This song speaks, with anger, against the fact that we humans are destroying ourselves and this world based on a power structure that needs to be made obsolete - we ALL deserve better. Tribal: not a literal tribe, but how people are born innocent, without ideas or religion, but their locality (tribe) makes the children grow into that idea which is forced upon them. No child is born a Christian, or a Hindu child, or a Muslim. Those are the tribal traits; tribal fantasies. The summary of indoctrination. The part about living in fear and sin: that is what has been used by kings and dictators ( and these days, televangelists) to maintain their position for 1000s of years. If there is some idea of a divine being which a populous are brought up to believe in, it can *give* the king or dictator an authority which has little chance of being questioned - because they are "divinely ordained".

To my understanding its triggered towards catholic believe (f.e. The words "kiss the ring, praise and sing"), religions in general, which fill the blanks of what they don't know or can't accept with witchcraft and (weak) fantasy... Mind you that Tuomas' intention is not to tell people what to believe or not, just to think in their own, not falling for ideologies that are at least in a good part... Weak fantasies.

🤩👍💥💯 "Weak Fantasy" is such a roaming track with thought-provoking lyrics. To Chrissy in short... Mr. Holopainen hardly ever put his personal opinions or thoughts straight down on the lyricism. Usually it takes a while to get used to 'read between the lines', in a way. If trying to understand the point of views from which direction each message is meant to approach. And That's just my humble opinion. Anyways. Thanks for checking out this Heavy blasting piece of their catalogue. 🤘😎 🇫🇮 💙

My world view is not secular either, but I respect other views and I respect the band. Nightwish band members are not ambassadors for one view point only. And they are not above criticism. Why should they be? So while you react to their music, stay true to yourselves, it keeps the dialogue fresh and authentic.

Hiya dear people from Auckland New Zealand :) Tuomas would never push his views on anyone, he allows people to interpret the lyrics in their own way. His lyrics are often very deep, and always thought provoking :) For me, this isn't about the existence of God or not, it's pointed towards people who use sacred books and ancient texts for their own agendas and use other people in their self-serving schemes. Believe in a God or not, I have no time for people who are so selfish and egotistical, they will make up rules that fit their own bias in order to control others. Jesus never had a church, golden robes, jewels, or rituals. What he had came from within, and was more powerful than any 'show-off' toys and transient material wealth. He lived his truth, as we should too, because before you can help anyone else, you must first be honest with yourself - self acceptance. Whatever name you wish to put on it, that force radiates from within. The most freeing thing you will ever do is come home to yourself - your home and your true wealth, and the answers you seek are already inside you, you just need to look there :) All rivers lead to one ocean, and whatever, and however you believe in anything, your actions should only ever be for your highest good and for the good of others. I did drift off onto a tangent a bit there! :D I hope it makes some sense :) Look after yourselves and your furry family :)

It's about religion, causing wars all over the world again and again all through mankind, due to the different religious stories people are forced to learn from childhood, before they have the necessary knowledge and background, and therefore able to form their own opinions. This whole album (Every form most beautiful) is about the Earth's birth (The Greatest Show on Earth) - and the Evolution through the 4,6 billion years the Earth has existed. The wonders of the Nature, the human race and all our stupidity and greatness, feelings etc etc. We in the Nordic Countries in Europe are mostly ateist, and therefore this song is in perfect harmony with our view of life and the Evolution. But we know that it will not be understood the same way in many other countries. But the composition and singing are incredible - you don't have to like or agree in the lyrics - just enjoy the performance and music. 👍🤘🤘🎶 Ps. Nowadays, these lyrics are even more important, due to the many religious fanatic refuges we get in Europe, bringing their own wars with them, and working on converting Europe into a Muslim Sharia area. It's a harsh time to experience, because we generally don't want to go back into the middleage of laws and behaviors. We want our freedom and evolutionary progress intact.

Necrocracy is rule of a dead (like in North Korea where the official head of the state had died long ago), whether as necromancy is communication of the dead (which I do not believe in). I do not know that Tuomas is a secularist, but do not know whether he believes in god or gods. Anyway, to add to the list of foreign words - a Franciscan friar, who, by the way, considered this song to be primitive, has named Tuomas "King of the Prosody". I think he did it when analyzed the song "Harvest".

This is a song against organized religion. Not religion itself mind you, but the history of 'The Church' taking advantage of people and causing suffering. Tuomas was raised religious but has since become secular. Troy and Floor are out atheists, and Marko has helped to write their most anti religious songs, though I haven't seen anything where he blatantly states if he's an atheist, but he likely is.

People probably explained it so far, but there is no sugar coating here. This is a massive critique for 3000 religions and gods people made up so far and infinite lives lost because of them, persecutions of nonbelievers and wars among each other. Nightwish is unapologetically nonreligious and secular band, praising everything good science did for humanity (Floor and Tuomas wanted to be biologists as kids, Marko astronomer, and so on). All bandmembers are from prosperous nonreligious countries and they don't walk on shells, scared they might hurt someone's feelings. This and song called Tribal are prime examples what they think about the topic.

I don't believe Troy or Tuomas is Atheist they are Agnostic this is where it gets interesting as you can be Agnostic and yet lean towards Atheism or Agnostic and lean towards Christianity but generally an Agnostic person sits in a place where they don't believe in God but don't disbelief in the possibility of a God or God's existence. So they sit on the fence unless someone proves otherwise they existence or non existence of God or a god/gods. Where an Atheist flat out disbelieves in God's existence. This song isn't so much an attack against Roman Catholism or organized religion it's how we as people use these things for our own gain or control over the masses for power and money including burning Witches and Slavery. But it does send a very serious message.

This is Tuomas’s slam at the control and manipulation of organised religion. - how the one on one relationship an individual can have with faith can be muddied by a large organisation with unscrupulous leaders who take adavantage of their “flock” for person gain and hide behind a curtain of righteousness. Crissy is right to have pursed lips watching this, this steps very close to the faith you hold so dear. But in fact the wider message is for those selfish and abusive individuals who ruin the purity of the collective church. Additionally it’s a slam on cultures or societies that make it almost criminal to not follow the designated pathway of faith- think Islamic countries such as Iran for example

Tuomas, being the deep thinker and seer he is, is merely commenting on Human Belief systems, which in themselves should be a personal journey of enlightenment. Never is any specific religion mentioned, merely questioning how the Human condition allows pure thoughts, tolerance and empathy to be sidetracked by bad people with hateful agendas. To me, any God for any religious belief comes from deep within the individual. When you are at peace with yourself, you can truly be at peace with the World and all creatures who inhabit it, including ourselves. Tuomas is posing a challenge to question and look inside ourselves for answers and serenity.

Good point about Dawkins. The ideas of evolution and darwinism have become sort of a religion themselves, and quite aggressively enforced one, I must say. It doesn't even matter if they're true or false - try to deny them as a scientist and your career will end rather quickly. Modern people consider themselves too intelligent to believe in God but they still need something to believe in, so this poor substitute will do. "Weak fantasy" indeed.

@@noneofyerbeeswax8194 Hey NoyB, always nice to read your comments. As a researcher I have had 1st hand experience of what scientism can do to research. About careers ending, funny you'd say that. A good friend of mine and class-mate at university specialized in genetics/molecular biology. In his PhD research he committed the ultimate sin: he rigorously applied the scientific method. This led to results which contradicted the dogmas of the day. They forced him to recant etc.. but he didn't and stuck with the data. When I went to the PhD ceremony years later, they commemorated their mistake and congratulated him (and themselves in hindsight) for his breakthrough contributions to what's now loosely defined as "epigenetics". So yeah, there's some irony in watching musicians putting Dawkins and "science" (as they understand it) on a pedestal, haha. Perhaps see you in the upcoming 2ndhandsouls stream? Might get interesting.. Cheers!

@@KristiinaBerg Yeah, the song is great, made more so by the fact that it does NOT push darwinism directly, unlike a lot of other stuff from the two last albums. When music becomes ideologically charged, it loses appeal to anyone but people with similar views. And of course, the "scientific" theme is by definition much less emotionally impactful than that of love, hate, despair, hope etc. For me personally, "The Greatest Show on Earth" is nowhere near "The Poet and the Pendulum".
