In 1898, Guam became a U.S. territory. During WWII, the United States evacuated most military personnel and all of their dependents, but left Guam and the indigenous Chamoru people without military defense or warning of the impending Japanese attack.
Guam was attacked on the same day as Pearl Harbor. However, unlike Hawaii, the Japanese took over and occupied Guam for 3 years. This was a time of great suffering for the Chamoru people.
To this day, Guam continues to fight for war reparations to bring acknowledgement
to the suffering that the Chamoru people endured. In spite of years of fighting for war reparations, the U.S. Congress refuses to fund any war reparations for the Chamoru people who are also U.S. citizens.
In this episode -- Akli'e, Guinaiya, Maria and Nolan talk to a Chamoru World War II survivor, Lucia "Tan Lula" McDonald, about her experience during World War II when the Japanese invaded and occupied Guam.
We were honored for Tan Lula to share her story with us and we hope that her story inspires you to spend more time with your grandparents and elders -- listening to the stories that they may want to share with you.
KIDS TALK introduces kids on Guam to local and regional elders, cultural practitioners and professionals through candid conversations, to affirm identity and to reconnect children and viewers to culture and tradition.
KIDS TALK is produced entirely in Guam by cultural 501(c)(3)non-profit DUK DUK GOOSE, INC. Our mission as an indigenous Chamoru production company is to inspire a deep love for our land, ocean and community and to uplift indigenous voices across our region.
