When I was 8 in 93 I trick or treated at Michael Jordan's house. Took 2 or 3 hours waiting in line to get to him, he was handing out candy directly, gave me a peanut butter cup. Still think it was cool he was actually handing out candy personally.

Jordan really wanted to work with Adidas. He even told them they didn't need to match Nike's offer; just come close. (I guess they didn't come close enough.)

People always try and say how dumb Adidas was to turndown Jordan but it's always revisionist history because in 1984 it just wasn't that simple. Jordan didn't come into the league with all this fan fair that most think and at the time the NBA finals were still on tape delay and wouldn't be aired live until 1986. I'm from Chicago and was 12 at the time and it wasn't until around January that he became a big deal because the most popular basketball player in the city when Jordan was drafted was a high school player named Ben Wilson and that November when he was murdered that was the #1 news story in the city. Also, you have to realize that Hip Hop had a MUCH bigger influence in inner cities at the time and the shoes you wore showed who you backed. Run DMC had the song My Adidas, if your were a Breaker you wore Puma's and if your favorite rapper was Dougie E. Fresh you rocked La Corss. At the time inner city kids did not buy shoes based off of what basketball player wore them.

@@YoungBasedChefBeezy naw what’s dumb is replying that something is dumb without being able to give a logical explanation. The simple fact is the NBA wasn’t on live TV and NOBODY was wearing Converse even though the two most popular players at the time endorsed them. Run DMC however was the #1 group in the country and brought Aerosmith back to relevance. Also as I said, at the time he wasn’t even the most popular basketball player in the city let alone athlete.

Back in the day the uniform rule is that the shoes have to be 50% white or black with team colored accenting (Nike Blazers and Converse Weapons for example). Which was still weird, because if you look at the Converse Weapons that Magic Johnson wore, it was majority team colors with some white panels. I guess the Jordans were initially looked at as too aggressive with the all black and red.

@Soy Orbison “$70 for a sneaker?!” my mom would say. There were multiple kids in the house to provide for, and I was outside all the time. A single pair of sneakers would get worn through to my socks before replaced, which might be every 6 months. My parents bought me off-brand shoes for $25 until I hit high school. At that point, my mom had to start working but that also meant we had a bit more money and I finally got a pair of Nike “Crosstrainers” (?) - they were like 3/4 high tops with the back cut lower, and came in various colors/styles. They were the IN shoe, and changed my social status at the school. Seriously, got ragged on for my off brand sneakers for years and now was wearing the popular shoe. Funny enough, those actually lasted a full year bc they were much better quality - so my parents likely weren’t even saving money repeatedly buying those cheap shoes! But back to Air Jordans - I want a pair now just to walk around in. Sneakers now last me 10 years! Hahaha

This was around the time that they lost Roger Federer too, I believe. This means they lost their biggest guy in Tennis. It was very big news at the time it happened. Nike still had Rafael Nadal, but for some reason they never felt *as* keen on marketing him as much as they did Federer, even in spite of Nadal overtaking most of his achievements. It might be because Nadal himself is a more grassroots "down to earth" person for this kind of stuff, rather than Fed which always had an entrepreneur side to him, but still, Nike seems to miss him in the sport of Tennis somewhat.

Durability is a concern in some sports, for example their tennis shoes, while light and comfortable usually wear out much sooner than some of the other brands shoes. For tennis for the longest of times you could buy a pair of adidas for tennis and just use them forever. I used to play at a very very low level and even then I chewed through 2 pairs of nikes in as many years while my friends just didn't seem to wear their shoes out.

Fun fact: The shoe that was REALLY banned was the Nike Air Ship but Nike secretly changed the story, retroactively, to make it seem like it was the Jordan 1. Also, the Jordan 1 and 2 weren't popular until 1994, when they re-released (aka Retro'ed) They were so uninspiring, since the Jordan 1 bared resemblance to shoes like the Nike Air Ship and the Nike Dunk, that Jordan was planning on leaving for Adidas or Converse, since he now had their attention. Nike tasked a rising sneaker designer, now currently known as the most successful sneaker designer of all time, Tinker Hatfield in charge of making the Jordan 3. MJ was so set on leaving Nike that he was actually playing golf and not planning to attend the meeting but his mother forced him to hear them out and they showed up to the meeting hours late and Tinkers presentation blew Jordan away, it didn't look like any other basketball sneaker on the market and it was a smash hit. Tinker designed Jordan shoes 3-15 and returned for the 20. Side note, he also made such iconic sneakers as all the original Air Max of the 90s, the Hurache, Air Trainers and Phil Knight believes that Tinker Hatfield saved the company and is to credit for most of its success.

@@LacyyGerelli Indeed, it's meant to be reactionary. Most people don't realize the prevalence of borderline slave labor that exists within Nike's manufacturing process of their shoes. If you've purchased Nike, Nestle, or iPhone products you're obtaining merchandise fully or partially produced using slave labor. It's honestly disgusting. What sucks is that the Nike shoes I've had in the past tend to outlast most other shoes. Most Nike shoes last a whole year and a half before falling apart, while most other shoes are lucky to make it past 8 months before falling apart.
