As a part of its efforts to decarbonize, Yamaha Motor Company has started using wood-derived cellulose nanofibers (CNF) in place of some plastic parts in its watercraft. The company began selling the products in North America on Aug. 25. CNF, which the company says is five times stronger than steel, is a next-generation material developed in Japan.
Nikkei took a behind-the-scenes look at how Yamaha succeeded in bringing the CNF products to market, taking advantage of Japan's unique position as the "Land of Wood."

There's nothing new here. Ford did similar back in the 1900s, only to be crushed by the steel moguls of the time. He was utilizing hemp fibers to make car body parts. The stuff was so strong, light, and durable that the steel industry saw a big threat to their potential market. The whole thing went into oblivion.

The people who cannot be criticised that own DuPont and some of the oil companies didn't like it, as well as those same people in the pharma industry. Hemp was a multi-industry threat and is to this day. Cotton as well.

fiberglass is another obvious composite. cellulose nanofibers though are another cup of tea.

Resin composites are difficult to recycle. Also breathing in fibres is not healthy let alone nano-fibres.

This is more about making materials more local and affordable. While still charging the same or more. Climate change is being sideline as the cause.

Cellulose nanofibers are what makes the Ancient Redwood trees grow to such huge heights and widths (enough for a tunnel to be carved through the trunk for a jeep to pass through and the tree still stands unscathed). it's quite curious to see use of CNF in food products though. I'm very very extremely wary of nano tech and its effects in human body and ecology in general as we don't know what effects it'll have on systems they haven't evolved to process such stuff safely. Assuming of course that Nature hasn't already made ubiquitous use of nanotech in structural fibres like nano cellulose already. Artificial nanotech though is another issue altogether.

I can argue with a 100 reasons why this is a not as big a deal as it is being made out to be. Hemp fiber is infused with epoxy resin also and is very strong. Plastics and resins are still needed in lesser amounts may be. And this decarbonization gimmick is a hoax.

Overall, I like this idea, but I don't like the part about adding CNF to food. -And will the toilet be able to flush, or will we get new problems with "floaters" ?

Chip board and particle board are also wood and resin .what is Resin made from .? Is it plastic or another byproduct of Oil .The crucial and primary concern should be the elimination of Plastics. If Resin is a byproduct of Oil and related to Plastics , then the targeted purpose is not met. Consider the loss of Trees which is a greater loss to carbon control .

2 points. 1. Normal traditional plastics are totally recyclable, much more easily than this product. 2. If you want to really do something about the environment ban the silly watercrafts, they are a waste of fuel products and a constant un-necessary source of pollution. So your want to add this to food products, has the long term effect of this product on the human body been studied?

Thats mean this CNF is more better and strong compare to corbon fiber? But why cut more tree to make it? Why dont just recycle back used paper to make this CNF? Used recycle paper to make it.. dont cut more tree.. 1 more thing.. why more co² is bad? Doesn't tree breath the co² n change it to oxygen?? So more co² that mean more tree will grow n more oxygen will produce?? Or am'i wrong?
@aiki6378

1 Tree can only take a little co2, unless you plant 2x the existing tree, co2 will build up and warm the atmosphere. And when the concetration of co2 is 10% humans die
@SC-zq6cu
@SC-zq6cu 5 күн бұрын
Trees do not breathe CO2. Trees breathe O2 just like most life on earth. Trees use CO2 to make food. But they do need O2 in order to digest that food just like we do. Trees do like more CO2 but only upto a point, beyond that the gains are negligible.

@@SC-zq6cu Yes they do Trees primarily "breathe" carbon dioxide (CO₂). Through the process of photosynthesis, trees and other green plants take in CO₂ from the atmosphere, using sunlight and water to convert it into glucose and oxygen. Oxygen (O₂) is then released back into the atmosphere as a byproduct. Here’s a simplified overview of the photosynthesis process: Carbon Dioxide Intake: Trees absorb CO₂ from the air through small openings in their leaves called stomata. Water Absorption: Trees take up water (H₂O) from the soil through their roots. Sunlight Energy: Chlorophyll in the leaves captures sunlight, providing the energy needed for photosynthesis. Chemical Reaction: Using the energy from sunlight, trees convert CO₂ and H₂O into glucose (C₆H₁₂O₆), a form of sugar that provides energy and growth material for the tree. Oxygen Release: Oxygen (O₂) is released as a byproduct of this chemical reaction and exits the tree through the stomata. So, the main gas that trees "breathe" in for their metabolic processes is CO₂

Ultimate crock. Bull feathers and chicken lips fantasia. First: Wet bikes with very very few exceptions are luxury recreation. Luxury, non necessity items are a major contributor to global warming. Second: Use of wood cellulose fibers. Deforestation of the planet another huge contributor of global warming. Are the trees used from fully sustainable forests, or yet another in a very very very very long list of land rapes, environmental destruction and carbon sink loss? Just answer this: Will the board of directors and stockholders at Yamaha willingly forego some of their profits in the iinterest of reducing global warming?
