I have also heard him discussing these specific regions many times in interviews. Why would we not defend Taiwan? We depend on the semiconductors produced in Taiwan to power all of our technological devices. If that production is seized by China, it will cripple the United States. That is why Vivek takes the position he does regarding Taiwan. It amazes me that so few people seem to realize how important Taiwan is to the United States compared to Ukraine and Israel. Being America-first does not mean that you take a completely isolationist approach and never go to war. It means that you look at everything through the lens of what is in the interests of America. Until America can onshore its semiconductor production, we will have to defend Taiwan if China invades it.

If another nation attacks another (eg Russia), then that nation factually needs to accept that the victim also get's a vote. Palestinian like the Russia seem to think that if they're the aggressors that their victim has no right to respond. Now why does Gaza and West Bank have borders, border guards, customs control, with Israel, Egypt, Jordan, their own flag, UN representation, State administration (Palestinian Authority)? Yes your right not formally on a map. Arguably a similar situation re Taiwan yet treated as a state even by countries like Australia or USA that do not recognise it's independence. Another example is Norfolk Island a territory of Australia or Cook Islands a protectorate of New Zealand. These Islands are part of those nations but yet each Island is also has autonomous administration, own flag, own national identity and restriction on who can reside there etc. So a state within a state is not so unusual. It's usually related to it's economic size (to small) and distinct ethnic/cultural/historical difference.
