I made a frugal meal last night for myself. Used some left over roast veg that I had in the freezer, a can of cannelini beans, 250grams spaghetti and some onion, garlic, parmesan, olives. It made at least 5 serves, I thought it was going to be 2 dinners. The veg and beans really make it filling

Thats a good grocery shopping video. All other KZfaqrs buy from Aldi and simply pile up junk and cost $200. Then they praise Aldi. They do not buy any staple food. I have never seen anyone buying oats, rice or beans...!!!

I love how many veggies you get in your challenges! Too often people sacrifice tons of money to buy meat instead of buying the cheaper plant-based proteins and saving money for veggies. Great job!
@NikkiBeal
@NikkiBeal 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you! I try really hard to keep them balanced. And while we're not vegan or vegetarian, I do considered meat and dairy (and sugar) "luxuries" in our diet - not only from a financial point of view but also a health & environmentally sustainable point of view. I'll probably get roasted by some for saying that, but whatever! Plant-based proteins, veggies & grains are cheaper, more filling & give you are greater variety of nutrients, so in my book they're a better bang for ya buck!
@pm2886
@pm2886 Жыл бұрын
So refreshing to see someone actually do this kind of challenge without wasting money on meat and dairy - both of which are definitely luxuries, and shouldn't be on any budget menu! So much healthier too, and good health saves even more money.

Hi Rachel here from the UK. you most probably know this but you can make a flor and oat milk from the oats there is info on line.a also if you have lentils you can make a flat bread. If buying a tin of chick peas the liquid can be whisked into vegan merengues. I also buy a packet of cheep small cut mixed vegetables useful for bulking out meals. Or for making a blended soup thickened with the oats . You could also make a rice pudding using home made oat milk and some sugar or sweetener if you can scraping some up.

@@NikkiBeal IGA is slightly more expensive but it’s negligible at the end of the day when it’s our only option. Some of the other shops have things that are cheaper but the product contains less. Price checked today (13.04.24) via the Woolies app for the same store: $18.15. Unfortunately some of the products I used are no longer available - I had to substitute in fresh capsicums & a different brand of sour cream. Plus fresh produce (the apple, carrot & onion) regularily fluctuate in price in Aust. Regardless, this video was always just for inspo/ideas & I think they're still cheap meal ideas despite the price increases we've seen over the last few years since this video was published. Now here's the problem. Woollies are drastically removing all their Home brand products off the shelves and replacing them with highly inflated Brand name products. I'm a pensioner and I know food is going to become a lot more scarce and anything available will be hugely expensive. My question is how do you get around that, on a fixed income, especially when the price of basic utilities is also going through the roof.
@NikkiBeal
@NikkiBeal 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, Barry, it's becoming a lot harder in the current state of things. We're already finding a lot less access to affordable fruit and vegetables, and our local Coles and Woolies are both continuing to have shortages and/or are constantly out of stock. It's really hard, especially for those who do not have access to cheap green grocers etc, and are forced to rely on the Big Name supermarkets.
