The first time I ever heard that I think I dropped my remote from cheering so loudly and it nearly broke. First off just the entire sequence, you hear the beginning of the music and don't realize what's up yet, you see the cops storming into the bar that Walter was just at. You see his half-empty glass of the drink he had ordered (I forget the exact name but I do know he drank his drinks "neat" at this point, something he picked up from Mike) next to a $100 dollar bill. And then finally you hear the famous Breaking Bad intro part of the music and you realize that you just heard the long version of the Breaking Bad theme for the first time. I was like "Wait, did they ever play it before or is this seriously the first time?" Masterpiece this show was.

Prot07ype Agreed. Pay close attention to the drink he is drinking at the bar. In the early seasons as Walt he drank his whiskey neat. In season 4 as he shifted more and more towards the evil of Heisenberg, he took Mike’s trait and started drinking it on the rocks. He prominently is drinking it on the rocks during threes scene with Hank where Hank says “tagging trees is a lot better than chasing monsters”. He is drinking it on the rocks when he says he is in the empire business. His ordering of this whiskey neat symbolizes his return to Walter. The music kicks in and Heisenberg is not done, and he leaves the whiskey neat untouched at the bar.

@@keef5 From the starting, they have seen Walter White as a horrible person, not as a mastermind criminal. They always think the things Walter White has done is and will be far worse than things others will do. Hell, they failed to even admire Walt's desperate attempts to save Hank and declared him the reason for it, when it was purely Jesse's fault. I highly doubt they will appreciate Walt's final act.

Ozymandias is quite possibly the greatest television episode ever aired. Perfect 10 on IMDB, only episode in history to ever get that rating. My two favourites after this are Face Off and Granite State, Felina was a bit silly IMO with the automated machine gun, considering how realistic the series was up to that point, it seemed a bit hokey.

As usual with this show, it’s brilliant how Walt Jr’s honesty is the complete opposite of Walt’s dishonesty. Jr is 100% honest at all times, often to the point of being brutally honest. Walt usually hides his true feelings and is good at putting up a front (the only person he lies badly to is Skylar), while Walt Jr wears his feelings on his sleeve and is never trying to be anything other than himself.

I think Walt saying "I wanted to give you so much more" to Walt Jr. was his way of telling him he loves him. I think it's more profound to hear it expressed in a different way than an outright "I love you." It feels more poetic to me that way. Obviously Walt Jr. was having none of it anyway.

Lol no way dude. Walt is only thinking about money. Not the damage he left behind. He doesn't apologize. He doesn't say i love you. All he thinks is important is leaving money. Because that's his only barometer of being a man. He's a cautionary tale and we should learn not to end up like him. Tell your kids you love them instead of trying to do things they never asked you to do.

@@CharlieBrown20XD6 So you're saying that Walt doesn't love his children? And if he didn't care about the damage he left behind, why did he return Holly to her mother and attempt to exonerate Skyler from all charges in the phone call? Were you sleeping through Ozymandias? OP was correct, Walt's "I wanted to give you so much more" was more profound than a simple "I love you" that many other shows would've done. Hell, his confession tape in the pilot episode was all about the love for his family.

@@CharlieBrown20XD6 The man has to leave them money. What else is he going to do with it? He tried to have Jr. listen to his side of things, but he kept interrupting him with death threats. He didn't get the chance to apologize. No one ever said Walt was a hero. And how was he supposed to know that Todd the sociopath would break into his house? You're being too one-dimensional about this. That's like saying Tony Soprano doesn't care about his children because he puts them in danger by being a mafia boss. It's a family business and he's providing for them. As for Walt, he has spent 50 years as a paranoid wimp, and after the death sentence of cancer, he wanted to stop sleepwalking through life and take control, while providing money for his family. He also entered the business as a "silent partner", which by doing so, he hoped no one would track him down and kill his family.

@endorphinz but that's the problem. Foolish pride causes fathers to do so much damage all in the name of "helping" us. Walt didn't want his son to see him as weak. All Walt ever knew of his father was a weak dying man and he was terrified of Walt Jr. Seeing him that way. But Walt Jr. Told him it didnt matter. Walt should have listened. That pride man. It will destroy us in the end.

"Tragic" and "Epic" and "Spectacular" are all appropriate adjectives, Steven. What impresses me is that when I think of how epic Game of Thrones is, with a huge cast, and extras in the hundreds and armies in the tens of thousands, and the scale of 7 kingdoms, etc.....and Breaking Bad manages to be EPIC in a story rarely involving more than about a half dozen people at any given point, in one desert city in New Mexico. That's some impressive shit right there.

Must've seen about a thousand movies and shows in my life, and can't really explain exactly why, but the final 3 minutes of this episode when the music starts to play and the cops start moving in on the bar with rifles drawn and then entering the bar and how the music stops on the glass is one of the most brilliant scenes ever saw. It's very abstract and hard to explain because nothing huge happens, but just the whole artistry and vision of that scene is phenomenal. I've seen it about 50 times and I still get the chills every single time.

I get why you think Walt is stupid for trying to leave and not really realizing what "Nationwide Manhunt" means, but you have to think of it from Walt's perspective. His Cancer is back and it's really getting to him, he's stuck in a room in the middle of nowhere and there's no one around him at all. He payed that guy thousands of dollars just to play cards with him. He's probably looking at his situation and thinking to himself, what's the difference between this and being locked up in Prison?

In prison, Jack's guys will take him out on the first day itself. That's why he avoids prison in the first place. Without that, prison is just the best place, as Saul said. He'll probably spend the rest of his days recognised as the badass drug kingpin, among the cellmates, he'll get his respect, had Gretchen and Elliott deliver the money as planned. Probably, just probably if he got better, would've broken out and continued the series, completely as Heisenberg this time. Without family restricting him.

Podcast Notes: Granite State Guests: Writer/Director Peter Gould; Exec Producer Michelle MacLaren; Co-Exec Producer Melissa Bernstein; Bryan Cranston 1. Robert Forster as the disappearer - they had him in mind when they wrote the character, particularly his character in Jackie Brown 2. It was a real vacuum cleaner repair shop. The place was amazing! It even had a hidden room 3. Walt is still trying to scheme his way out of things & still thinks he can get out of this. he’s facing eventually hitting rock bottom & wants to fight but is being forced into flight 4. Marie on her way back from where? They think DEA hq where she was answering questions. This is the first time the DEA is hearing about Walt & Jesse 5. Walt & Jesse are both underground, but both still have some “mojo” 6. Saul is starting to discard his Saul-ness, and we see Saul is an identity he built just as Walt built Heisenberg 7. Kevin Cordasco, the kid from Make a Wish I wrote about in the episode 5x09...the thing he said he wanted to know more about/see again that lead them to do things differently than they would’ve otherwise was Gretchen & Elliot 8. The Andrea scene was scripted & filmed differently & changed in editing. Jesse is shown in the car with a bag over his head. Aaron, so deep in character, realized where they were going immediately & went from 0 to 10, flipping out in the car. This keys us in too early what’s happening, Kelley Dixon thought, so she cut that & focused instead on Todd. Insert Section with Aaron: 10. Waking up next to Jane’s body was the hardest scene he’s done in his career; this was second. He doesn’t think it was a romantic relationship for him anymore, but he feels the need to protect 11. Aaron’s mom, almost on a daily basis, emails him to tell him how proud she is of him 💗 Back to the main group: 12. When Walt goes to the bar & calls Jr...they had to shoot that twice! Michelle got an email from Diane Mercer that the film had fallen off a truck and an airplane drove over it. They thought it was a joke! There were photos...it was real! A little of it was recovered, but it was mostly lost 13. The time jump was 5-6 months 14. If you look closely, there’s a cactus covered in snow in front of the bar. They filmed in NM, and someone on set asked what they were going to do about the cactus? Peter nor anyone had even noticed it! So they snowed it up

Fun fact, when they originally wrote the cold open of the first episode, they had no idea how they were going to get Walt from in hiding to that point. Thankfully a fan had actually wrote them a letter asking if Gretchen and Elliot would be coming back at any point. The writers had outright forgotten about the Gray Matter parts and the letter luckily reminded them, allowing them to get Walt from point A to point B. (I imagine this is why Walt brought it up earlier in the season too, to also remind the viewers.) Since there'll probably be questions about the title of the finale, I'll just post it here. The last episode is called "Felina" and it has 3 meanings. 1: It's an anagram of the word finale. 2: It's a reference to the 1959 song "El Paso" by Marty Robbins. Walt is even heard humming the song at one point in the episode. I can't say more due to spoilers, but I'd recommend listening to the song afterwards, as it is quite similar to how the episode plays out. 3: This one is my favorite. "Felina" is a portmanteau of the chemical symbols Fe, Li, and Na, which are the symbols for Iron, Lithium and Sodium. Meaning the title is meant to roughly translate to "Blood, Meth, and Tears." Although this is possibly based on a misconception, as methamphetamines don't contain lithium.

Walt blames Jesse for Hank's death, and for losing his 80mil, that's why he turned Jesse in, and even told him about Jane, to hurt Jesse more. Walt was so broken and defeated when Hank died in front of him, and him having to lose all his work and money to thugs, turning Jesse in was his way of getting back at him. Who else likes Granite State more than Ozymandias? Something about this episode makes me like it slightly more. Robert Forster was a top secret casting choice; the fact they were going to show the vacuum repair guy was a big surprise, and I personally was blown away that not only they showed him but it was Bob Forster. This is another Tarantino-homage casting as he was also a comeback-cast in Jackie Brown as a bail bondsmen, for which he was nominated for supporting actor. He's a member of mensa, such an interesting guy. The cinematography and music at the end of this episode are just brilliant with the local NH police descending upon the place with rifles drawn in that musty bar. I love how they show the realistic magnitude of the Schwartz' success talking about their business on Charlie Rose and how a New York Times columnist wrote an article about them. In real life, I feel you only see this version of peoples' success, but you don't see the unsung heroes like Walter White, who gets no credit, and you don't know the nuances of their success, such as how Walt was a big contributor in the beginning. Them snubbing him on national tv would have been a devastating blow to him, but Walt will use that and take it a step further. It would have been hard for Walt to accept the money because a) it was pity money that technically he felt he deserved (although legally he had already sold his tock shares prior to its takeoff and growth), and b) the condition was that he would take a job for them and work for them, and one would have to imagine that taking such a job with them after two decades of contention and spite would have been a form of psychological torture to Walt. It's like "only now, now when he is on his deathbed do they want to include him in and offer him a job out of pity, after never fully giving him credit and recognizing publicy how much of an importance he served in the formation and creation of the company".

Walt kidnapping Holy is his last desperate attempt to still have control of his original mission, his raison d'etre: "for the family". At that point, Skyler and Flynn have slipped away from his hand, they're already distant (shown as camera pan away as Flynn protect Skyler from Walt), and the only family who's left, who he can "control", is Holy. It's logical for Walt in the heat of that situation. This scene is the best scene of Breaking Bad and maybe in the history of TV shows, and that desperate attempt of Walt to kidnapping Holy, followed by Skyler's screaming, is one of the reasons that makes it the best.

I could see in Steven's face after he said "at least he still has that barrel of money" that he was thinking in his head, "but that's all he has." Man has lost his family, the respect of his son, any life he had left with the people he loved. Even his final contribution of money is unwanted and potentially dangerous to the welfare of his family. He's lost everything. And while ego is definitely a driving force in his reaction to the Charlie Rose interview, consider this: that was all he had left. From what we saw, he essentially founded Grey Matter in its entirety, including naming the company, and launching the initial products that made investors interested. To have all that taken away from him, was the last straw. And certainly, it wouldn't be lost on Walt how his final contribution, "Blue Sky", was being usurped and taken away from him as well. How he was as powerless to prevent a bunch of Aryan Nation street thugs from stealing his legacy as he was he former colleagues who weren't nearly as 'brilliant' as he was. Dude is on a horse with no name in the middle of a desert. He wants to do something. Anything.

Fun fact, Jesse was supposed to die to Tuco in season 1 but Vince changed his mind when he saw his performance.

Season 5A, that ends with Hank finding out, should have been a full 13 episode season. Then Season 6, Walt v Hank, could be 13 episodes, and we'd get 3 or 5 episodes of this Walt. But alas, half seasons

"That gave me a horrible creepy chill"- Steve when Skyler is held hostage by the guy in the mask.....Exactly, hhis is one of the best scenes in the show, imo. It was perfect! The whole setup with the police outside, her looking out the window, then just strolling down the hall, to be met by these nefarious dudes wearing burglar masks. I honestly thought they were going to kill her for a minute. Even when Todd puts his hand on her shoulder, it looks like he may do it after the tension momentarily ceased.
