An underrated reason to have these kind of lenses for travel, is how much more relaxed I become not having a billion dollars of glass with me. That peace of mind just makes me feel more present on my trip, and frees me to see things I otherwise may have missed. I own the 2.8 trinity, but for travelling I always bring a lens like this. Lighter, cheaper, and more than good enough.

Agree, 100%. I am off to South Africa tomorrow and have been given loads of dire warnings regarding walking around with a camera on display. I long to take my Z9 to photograph wildlife but it will stay at home and I will be taking my Z7 instead - At least I can buy a replacement Z7 pretty quickly - if I lost the Z9 it would take 6 months + to get a replacement. Don't want to take that risk. These new lenses look the perfect solution, however, this new lens won't be here in time for tomorrow's flight!!!!

I can already tell this will be my Christmas gift for 2022. I have been extremely pleased with how the 28-75 has performed for my uses. I've been hoping for an affordable wide zoom, and Nikon it seems will be delivering. The 17-28 and 28-75 will be in my light-carry bag for landscape and street photography. Looking forward to your full in-depth review of this wide zoom. Cheers Matt

I don’t shoot wide too often and didn’t want to spend over $2k on wide 2.8 but this fits the price point, quality and light weight. $1200 is the right price. I wish Tamron brings their 35-150/2-2.8 lens to Nikon. That’ll be a perfect travel lens for sure.

This exact same lens is even less costly as the Tamron 17-28mm f2.8 lens for E-mount for Sony $800 USD. You do know this is the same lens as the Tamron 17-28mm f2.8, just like the Z-mount 28-75mm f2.8; and the coming Z-mount 70-180mm f2.8 are the same as Tamron's trilogy of lenses, badged by Nikon and in Z-mount. Cheers

I just saw this announcement last night. Nice reveiw, Matt. Like the music too -- very reminiscent of Talking Heads' Once in a Lifetime. These are great additions to the Z-mount lens line-up. I like my 14-30 f/4 but often wish for a bit more light/separation. I think the 20mm f/1.8 is the answer for my use case, though these would be great for travel!

What to choose, what to choose. Looks like a great lens. I will still end up with the 14-30 f4. Just as portable, same price…. A little wider and longer. I’d be happy with either. Both cheap for what you’re getting. Thanks for this preview Matt. Some nice Astro in the end. Good start. 👍🏻

I too was looking at the 14-30 f/4.0, but it has the one thing that annoys me most in any zoom lens that has it, and that's the zoom ring stow position. You can't use the lens when the zoom ring is in that stow position, so why have it. Many compact point and shoots have that feature because they are meant to be flat and pocketable, but on a interchangeable lens camera?

I would/will absolutely go down this trinity route (foreshadowing the Tamron 70-180 formula with Nikon motors) rather than the f/4 route I had to go in F mount for a lower cost trinity. Everyone has complained why we haven't seen f/4 Z mount F mount replacements yet.... well as far as I'm concerned, I'll take these non-S f/2.8 lenses over f/4 S's! Keep them coming Nikon.

Great to see your growing reputation in the world of leading YT photography gear reviewers. I really enjoy your videos and reviews. Nikon’s strategy is very clever. On the AU Nikon site this new lens, however, is exactly the same price as the 14-30mm F4. So not an F2.8 bargain unfortunately.

Good day Matt, great stuff as usual. Love the video! I'm very tempted to order the Z 17-28mm f/2.8 lens for my upcoming Australia trip. I have the AF-S Nikkor 17-35 1:2.8D lens which seems to work well with the FTZ adapter. What you seem to be saying is that we should sell our F mount lenses and replace them with these new Z mount lenses. One thing is for sure, I'm not going to buy another F mount lens again. However, I'm very attached to my legacy glass...

I really like what Nikon is doing. It’s allowing Tamron to release lenses but also badging necessary ones under the Nikon logo. This makes it easier for new people getting into photography to understand lenses. I know when I was first getting in I was scared of 3rd party lenses because I didn’t understand how good they are. This also makes it nice because the lens can be updated via the camera not that an extra dock is bad but it’s still nice to know the lens will always work with the camera perfectly.
@USGrant21st
@USGrant21st Жыл бұрын
This is not rebadged lens, and it's not manufactured by Tamron. It's a Tamron designed lens modified and manufactured by Nikon. Nikon claimed to have reworked some of the motor mechanisms, added a new housing, and changed up the weather-resistance. Nikon didn't do anything to the coatings, so these Tamron designed lenses are somewhat warmer than Nikon designed lenses.

The new Z-mount 28-75mm f2.8; Z-mount 17-28mm f2.8;and coming Z-mount 70-180mm f2.8 are the Tamron trilogy of the exact same three lenses that were first made in E-mount for Sony. Nikon has rebadged them and made them into Z-mount lenses. That is a good thing as they are excellent, yet affordable lenses. I have the Tamron 17-28mm f2.8 lens in E-mount for my Sony cameras and I love the images I have gotten with it around the world. FYI, Tamron is partly owned by Sony. And Nikon and Sony have had a longtime business relationship with Sony making many top Nikon cameras' image sensors. The Tamron-badged and made Z-mount 70-300mm is coming next . Tamron also has made that lens in E-mount. Cheers and best to you.

This is a killer combo for events! I can get these two lenses for less than price of a single 24-70s! Yes 24-70s is the king of all lenses, but for event work I think it is a overkill to have it. I think I am going to get 28-75 soon for lower light events. I find that 24-120s lacks in lowlight situations because of AF speed and hitting AF, and that 28-75 beats older 24-70g lenses with adapters (same price now more or less). YT keeps suggesting me your videos and I really like your work Matt. You got yourself a new subscriber :)

Hi Matt, you are absolutely right. In fact, there are hardly any bad lenses these days. Here Nikon shows that you can already achieve 85-90% of the top quality with this lens. It's always the case that you pay for this 10-15% higher quality with double the price. I love my Nikon 24-70mm 2.8. But this would be a welcome alternative for me for the lower range. You have taken beautiful photos with this camera lens combination. I'm seriously considering getting it. I have a Z7.

Interesting options, those half-2.8's. Half the price, half the weight...well, roughly at least. If you shoot events, people, street, those lenses get you a much lighter setup (about 2kg for the 17-28, 28-75 and the now on the roadmap 70-180), quite compact, and affordable. If you shoot landscape, architecture, interior and want compact, get the Nikon f4 zooms at similar prices. If you need it all and don't mind the size/weight/price there are the 2.8 S zooms for you. Great to have choices! Nikon lens line looks better and better with those additions - not to forget the new S primes (135, 35).

My 28 f2.8 and 20 f1.8 are both thinking about calling a real estate agent s they both might find new homes later this year or early year. Especially if some of the Astro guys, like Richard Tatti ,give it a shot and it performs well. I don’t due much Astro due to light pollution where I live, so I’m not using the 20 nearly as much as I thought, I would get much more use with the 17-28. 🤔

It may be a Tamron rebadge, but all of their recent lenses have been great. The Sony version of this lens is arguably the best value wide zoom available. The only issue I have with this Nikon/Tamron partnership is that the Nikor badged versions cost more than the Tamron lenses for Sony. Hopefully they bring the 35-150 along with the 70-180.

A little bit too long on the short end in my opinion, as I already have the 14-30mm f4. But I think it's a smart move from Nikon to create a "Budget Holy Trinity", assuming the announced 70-180mm will be also a rebranded Tamron 70-180mm f2.8.

I'd be interested in the 17-28 f/2.8 if it comes down in price. I'm not really interested in the 28-75 because I already have the 24-70 f/4, which is smaller, cheaper if bought in a kit, and has better IQ. (I'll use primes if I want something faster in the 24-70 range.) Considering that an ultrawide is a bit of a specialist lens for most people, this seems to tick a lot of boxes without breaking the bank. I'd also be potentially interested in the 70-180 f/2.8.

This budget f/2.8 option is also a totally legitimate choice, giving better bokeh and low light capability. Good move Nikon!

I'm spoilt since moving over to the Z bodies and acquiring some of the native lenses. Now my older AF-S lenses and DSLR seem overly bulky and heavy

All new Z lenses are good news but a 200-600 would have been more welcome. I asked Nikon about it at the Photography Show here in the UK and just got blank looks. They need to start delivering this stuff. On a more positive note I did finally get my hands on the Z9 - I don’t need it, but I want it!

Now I want 28-75 2.8 even more for my Z 5 because I could then get 17-28 2.8 too. :)

A nice option if you need f2.8 zoom, very lightweight and sharp price, but compared to 14-30f4 even though its pricier it offers more bang for the buck. The zoom range being less than 2x ... is a bit unfortunate, you might consider a 20f1.8 prime if aperture is your main reason to look at this lens. Hope there is a 16-35f2.8 s-line coming anytime (it's not on the roadmap). For the time being I stick to my 16-35f4+FTZ, it even has VR.

Good for Nikon to offer quality budget options, much more attractive than the Canon RF mount in that respect. As a Sony shooter, just happy we have this at an even lower price point.

Looks interesting. Perfect for events shooting etc. Maybe not as sharp as the S-Line but for those of us that shoot above ISO 1000 we wont notice the difference. Actually a great option for a DX camera as a back up camera.

What do you think about this nikon lens if we compare it with Tamron 17-28 for sony? Cause the features are completely the same (except for the dimension, but however it's really close).

Nice video. This is another deal with Tamron, so it should be a great lens. But why $1,200, when the Sony 17-28 f2.8 E-mount is now selling here in U.S. for $799.00, regular price $999?

Great to have these options, though I'm still a little jealous of Sony shooters who have had access to this glass (Tamron lenses) for a few years at lower prices, and I'm anticipating Tamron announcing the G2 version of this lens on Sony mount soon. Nikon's strategy is certainly better than Canon for giving affordable options, but I'd prefer if both would just allow Tamron and Sigma to release any lenses like Sony does. That said, I'll probably buy this lens when it goes on sale..

Different strokes for different folks. While the f2.8 is appealing, having a versatile zoom range in the form of the newish 24-120 f4 is more valuable to me personally. But I am happy to see Nikon add to the line-up and attact new users, strengthen the bottom line, so that hopefully products that speak to me more strongly can be brought to market. Like the Z 200-600. Damit Nikon, release that lens already!!! (Sigh, sorry, slowly running out of patience.)

I don't know. The extra 3mm of the 14-30 is more important for me than 2.8

Hi Matt, Away from Melbourne weather... Can't blame you!! Do you think this lens is a "rebadged" Tamron one, as the 28-75 f/2.8 seems to be? Pretty good presage of what will be coming from them, if you ask me!! Exciting times!! Anyway, I think this lens will be EXTREMELY interesting for hobbyists videographer who won't invest in a 14-24 2.8S. Maybe even more interesting actually. Probably a good bit less sharp = good for some more "cinematic look" IMO; all internal zoom and focussing = perfect for filter use; 67 mm thread = less expensive filters; close focussing; 2.8, so well 2.8!!... I mean, for video, if the focus speed and accuracy is good, and I have no doubt about that, then you end up with a killer lens!! Put that on a Z6III with internal RAW or ProRes 4K in a filmmaker pack and you can put one aside for me FOR SURE!!

I won’t be adding these particular 2.8 lenses, as I already have both a 14-30 S lens and 24-120S. They are both superb. If I need to go faster, I will simply go to the 20mm S and 35mm S f1.8. The 20mm, in particular, is a fantastic wide prime. I would love a 14mm prime, as well. For travel, in my view, it difficult to top the 24-120 S. So for me, no use case, given what I already own. I did see on an updated roadmap a 135mm prime….now THAT is a lens I would be excited about!

Hi Matt, I love your videos but why you don’t mention that this is a Tamron lens rebadged by Nikon, and that Tamron price is 800$ for Sony FE (against 1200$ for Nikon rebadged one) ? That is 50% more which is too much (+100$ is ok, but 400$ …).
