Well, the AF-D version became less good when the AF-S came out. There is no shame in being superseded with time. I'm actually buying this AF-S version even though I have a full kit Nikon Z, including the razor sharp Z version of this lens, because I'm going to shoot film on a Nikon F100 and it obviously needs a proper F mount lens. The Tamron 85mm F1.8 VC is the better lens with a slight margin in image quality, but I is not compatible with older Nikon bodies.

One of the best values in the Nikon ecosystem. It is surprisingly light and produces wonderful images. Great lens. Sharper than the 1.4g. Some people love the 1.4d… the lens to really lust after is the RF canon 1.2, at 10x the cost of the 1.8g. My personal favorite is the beautiful zeiss 1.4 planar, which is especially what you want if you’re doing black and white. Thanks for the video.

I love using this lens, but shooting into the light (backlit hair etc), it can produce some CA, which is not always easy to completely remove. This may just be my copy of course, but overall, it does produce some very pleasingly sharp images. For the price, it is amazing.

I'm a videographer looking to get my first telephoto lens. I am looking at the 85mm, currently using a Nikon Z6. However, I'm trying to decide between the 1.8 S or get the cheaper 1.8 G... have you had experience comparing these two and which you would recommend? My workflow is 90% video and 10% photo. The purpose of this lens is to get close up shots of computer components. Mainly used for B-roll. What are your thoughts?
@BoostLeekdMedia
@BoostLeekdMedia 4 жыл бұрын
The 85 1.8S is superior to the 1.8G, since the 1.8S is a native lens. If you're on a budget, the 1.8G is more than enough. I've done a few videos with the 1.8G with my Z6 and I think it's amazing. The 1.8S will just give you the the 5 axis image stabilization and essentially a silent focus.
@haurjie
@haurjie 4 жыл бұрын
@@BoostLeekdMedia thanks for the answer! I also watched another reviewer who did a comparison, when you zoom in, apparently from f/1.8-5 on the 1.8G, there's some color fringing too. but overall yes, all the information I was able to gather including yours I think the 1.8S native Z lens will be a better investment long run . Thanks again!
@ChrisBundy17
@ChrisBundy17 3 жыл бұрын
@@haurjie I will chime in, if a little late, and say that the manual focus throw distance is lacking. Very short distance to spin the ring from minimum focus to infinity. Also feels a bit cheap so being buttery smooth on rack focus is difficult. I love Tokina's 100mm 2.8 for the opposite. Large smooth ring means buttery smooth focus pulls. Use that more than any AF features in my b-roll for wedding videography.

@BoostLeekdMedia
@BoostLeekdMedia 2 жыл бұрын
It's a bit difficult to explain via words. But in a simple explanation, the higher the aperture, the more 'bokeh' you will get. Bokeh is blurring the background from your subject to get the 3D effect. Also to add, the higher the aperture (for example, at F/1.8) the more light comes through the lens. The lower the aperture (F/2.8), there is less light coming through the lens and onto the camera sensor. The article here explains aperture quite well photographylife.com/what-is-aperture-in-photography#:~:text=to%20aperture%20below.-,What%20is%20Aperture%3F,the%20lens%20or%20the%20camera.

It says in the description on amazon that it’s a telephoto lens? Is that accurate?
@BoostLeekdMedia
@BoostLeekdMedia 4 жыл бұрын
Not accurate. BUT, it could be a "telephoto" lens on cameras that have a crop sensor. On a crop sensor camera, it would have a focal length of about 127mm versus 85mm. Technically, a telephoto lens made to photograph subjects from a far distance. Personally, I don't think the 85mm qualifies as a telephoto lens but it just really depends what you want to use it for. The 85 is best used for portraits.
@sarveshparakh7289
@sarveshparakh7289 3 жыл бұрын
It is a telephoto lens. Anything that is tighter than the normal human perception (around 43-53 mm) is a telephoto. Telephoto does not always mean shoot from distance. It means anything tighter than the normal human perception. Wide is the exact opposite and then there is 'normal' which are lenses ranging from 42mm (sometimes even 40mm) to about 58mm.

You can get tighter shots with the 85, especially if you're near the stage. It's excellent for lowlight situations too.

I can't find the lens anywhere for less than $475, but it was a whole $50 cheaper in this video! Why is this lens getting more expensive over time?
@BoostLeekdMedia
@BoostLeekdMedia 3 жыл бұрын
What camera websites are you browsing? I have seen a few used ones on KEH, B&H, Adorama and Amazon being sold for under $375. These lenses usually stick to their value and the ones I have seen for $300 are sold REAL fast. As for getting expensive over time, it could just be Black Friday marketing right now.

@@BoostLeekdMedia I have been searching Amazon, KEH, and Best Buy for the lens and they are all at least $475 for a new, not refurbished, lens. I just purchased a new one from Walmart.com which had it listed on "clearance" for $425 and had the original price marked at $475. Were the lenses you found for $375 new or refurbished? I am looking at KEH and B&H and Adorama, but can't find any for the price you found them at.

lol best way to learn with it is to use it. There isnt a "perfect" setting for this lens since it really depends on the amount of light you're working with. If its daylight outside, put the camera in "aperture mode" and put the aperture at F/1.8 and start taking pics. I hope this helps!
