In this video, I take a look at Nikon's fast wide angle 28mm lens for F mount. The 28mm f/1.8 is more affordable than the f/1.4, yet offers a nice bump in speed compared to an f/2.8 zoom or prime.
As with all my lens reviews, I test the lens, do some real world shooting, and convey my thoughts on this offering. I'm not into 35mm much it's not wide enough for me, the 20mm is also a good lens - but a bit more expensive. The 28 1.4 is still very expensive used, for me the 1.8 makes sense - it's not perfect but it's a good performer overall, and lightweight. I like the lens quite a bit

I use it a lot, nothing is perfect but it's a solid performer overall. The 1.4 is said to be even better, but it's quite a lot more in cost, this is more than good enough for a fast 28mm that's light

It's fine on APS-C even 24mp sensors, field of view is 42mm roughly so a bit wider then the 50mm equivalent. The DX 35mm 1.8 is quite good (perhaps this has better rendering IMO), and much cheaper, but you might find this useful if you use the slightly wider field of view. I use this quite a bit on APS-C format for video as it can focus close ish for a 28mm

Can you speak to how well it focuses in low light on the Z6/7II with FTZ adaptor?

I have not use it on the Nikon Z cameras, closest I can get is the D780 live view (which is similar to the Z6) This is quite a fast lens, the AF is pretty accurate in low light. There is a low light AF option (just like the Z cameras), this uses contrast AF and gains up the display. I've no obvious concerns with AF with this lens It's not the shortest lens (add the adapter size), but f/1.8 is a lot faster than f/2.8 (the native Z 28mm lens) Hope that helps a bit

@@MrBazReviews Yeah - I have the native 2.8 28mm for Z - great lens but not fast enough for me in low light - I wish that lens had been an f/2 like the 40mm, which is a great lens - probably the best bang for buck in the Z system, but I need a faster 28mm and it seems the 1.8G or the 1.4E is the only real option for Nikon. The 1.4E is much more expensive and I don't really want to put a lot of money into F mount lenses at this point - also the 1.8G has a better magnification ratio so I was thinking it might be good enough for detail shots for wedding. Thanks for the response.

@@baronsilverton6504 The 1.4 for me is too expensive, even used. Pro build or not it's overkill IMO. The 1.8 isn't too expensive, and can be found pretty decent prices used. I'm sure a Z 28mm F1.8 might turn up, thing is it's probably going to be pricey enough I would think. I'm happy with the performance of the 1.8, it's been a popular lens for wedding shooters

Which camera and lenses are finally waterproof? Can't it be that in bad weather you can only film with a "GoPro"!? I don't understand that, no fun !!! Everything is waterproof, even RC cars, but really good cameras and lenses aren't!!!?

The 28mm f/1.4 E is weather resistant, but the price is pretty hefty indeed. It's a bit much IMO for me. Camera depends on the model, the one here someone did a test with in heavy rain and it survived OK (D780). I know Pentax do a range of WR lenses, more affordable. Other makers, it's mostly the pro stuff that is better sealed, third party they got a lot better in recent years.
