Picked up an F100 and Bat.Grip in very good condition over 7 years ago. Still in the same condition since this thing is a hand tank. Unsurprisingly, It has outlived my D5100 (sold it). Absolutely love this camera; its tanky feel, its instant AF, ease of use and compatibility with all F mount lenses.

Great video Darryl! I have the same camera and lens set up - they produce sharp photos with good micro contrast. I had great results with Kodak Portra 160/400, Ultramax, Fujicolor C200 and Superia 400. The matrix metering is very useful and it meters better than my Leica M7.

Great video on your Nikon F100 mate, and using black & white film. I have never used B&W film but I have changed a few of my digital shots to B&W my 1/16 WWII RC Tiger 1 tank and it looked like it was directly out of WWII. I have been watching a very large number of videos regarding the Nikon F100 and the Nikon F5, and boy am I torn between the two cameras. The F5 and the F100 have their pros and cons and that makes it even harder to decide. The things on the F5 I do like are it’s construction with a cast magnesium alloy die-cast body covered by a durable aluminium housing, the switchable viewfinder curtain (eye piece shutter)for when one is taking a shot and you do not want extra light entering the camera, mirror lockup, titanium viewfinder housing, manual film rewind option if one likes a quiet rewind of film, and the F5 being weather and dust proof. The F5 cons are: it’s heavy weight is something to consider. The F100 is also built like a tank with it’s cast magnesium alloy frame, some features of the F5 carried over to the F100, being able to attach a Battery Pack if one wishes, and the F100 is some 425g lighter than the F5 which makes it a much better camera to carry around especially when using the camera for long periods of time. The F100 cons are: film door latches prone to breaking with the film door and latches being made of plastic. So in a nutshell I like both cameras.

Darryl, any E-Type lens, those with an electronic diaphragm, won't work completely on the F100. They'll focus but won't stop down from their maximum aperture. You could use them but only wide open. Some new Tamron lenses like the G2 zooms and the 35-150 are also E-Type and won't work either. Discovered this about the Tamron 35-150 just yesterday.

I just love CC and digital I have know plans for going to 35mm film. I have a Sinnar 5x4 that I may play with but I doubt it. I thinking about one of the high end Nikon Z's but not the Z7 as its to close to my D850, Would I update my X1D to the X1D II no there is not much difference in image quality which is amazing for me. I gave myself a challenge last week: There is a massive book fair in my city of Gothenburg, Sweden and it is a challenging place to shoot because of the uneven lighting so I decided to bring my Canon 1v with an adapted Nikkor E 35mm 2.5 lens and roll of 35mm Ilford delta 3200. That film turned out to be a great choice as I was able to get very good shutter speeds event at f8 and captured some nice frames! I then developed the film using d76 stock for 10.5 minutes and will scan them later via my dslr setup! As for the Kosmo film, I have heard good things about it and it looks nice but I havnt shot it myself so it would be a nice challenge to try and see how it does with the usually dull and grey fall/winter season of Gothenburg, Sweden! Keep Up the Good work Darryl!

@@DarrylCarey My go to film is hp5+ 400, I can push that film allot and get a good result. The delta 3200 being a native iso 1000 film is interesting, but I argue that only if you have some available light and need that extra help via the two stop push then using it as 3200 is a good help for low light environments.

Hi Don, I forgot to say in the video the setting I was using. F100 was set to A mode with spot metering, so the F100 was doing all the work. The metering works really well. Have yet to try the F100 with colour film
@DonKittle

Darryl Carey good to know! I often use matrix metering unless there is something specific in the scene I want to meter against. And in that case, I often pull out a Pentax spot meter that I use in LF photography and figure out what I want in “zone 5” 😀
@DarrylCarey

@@DonKittle I use a Sekonic light meter when shooting with my Leica MP or M7 just to make sure the metering on the camera is working ok and then I will shoot a whole without worrying. Was cobsmacked all I did was focus and squeeze! The camera chose wisley. No metering for the shadows etc the fact I'd overcooked the film with the settings I used limited the underexpose enough so there were almost no muddy blacks and the shutter speeds were fast enough with stopping power it was a bright day though! I really wish this could use the newer 24-70VR which I have and control the aperture. Is there some sort of adapter that I can maybe use to let me do so?

It is a shame you can use some of the newer DSLR lenses, my F100 is still my fav 35mm film camera, just so easy to use

How the D- series lenses behave on F100? Especially, regarding manual focus. Moreover, the back door lock broke on my F80 recently & all of sudden. I later read that this is a very common issue with that camera. Is there any such known issue of construction and/ or performance weakness for Nikon F100?
@DarrylCarey

I’m using old manual lenses and the also focus manually on the 50mm f/1.8 with no problems. I have not found any weakness with the F100 it was built as a semi pro DSLR

I just got back into film again, so I found a Nikon FE with 50 1.8 lens for $30 USD. Since it will only focus manually, will that 28mm G lens work on it?

Darryl Carey Great! There are so many boutique films now it's quite daunting to know where to start. But it's time to set aside portra and hp5 and have a little fun. The F100 was the camera on my photography school. Still a winner.

Hi Darryl, excellent channel and content you have! I'm getting back into film, I bought a Pentax ME Super + 35mm f2 lens Shooting with film again has awakened my love of old school photography and the process that goes into it! unfortunately I'm going through alot of film! do you know where I can get some good cheap film in Auck?

The dot is not always correct. It's more of a reference. I rely on my own eyes. It will work really well for camera/lens combos of the same generation (most likely due to calibration from Nikon). What I've done is learned the focus dot in relation to optical focus. So is focus before or after the dot. My focus is typically before the dot so dot comes on, I rotate back slightly, focus.
@DarrylCarey
@DarrylCarey 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Donovan , never had trouble with the dot not being in focus on my F5 and with the F100 and 50mm f/1.8 D lens. It’s good to know I can not trust the dot as much as I thought I could :)

@@DarrylCarey I use a Non Ai 50mm F/2 H manual lens on a D300. The little dot is very accurate from close range up to about 15ft-20ft, after that it's hit or miss especially at infinity focus.

What are your thoughts on upgrading to the 1.8 af-s from a 2.8 AF-D 28mm? The prices are even lower here which kinda attracts me to getting it.
@DarrylCarey
@DarrylCarey 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Toine, if its a 28mm f/1.8 I would highly recommend upgrading. The 28mm f/2.8 AF-D is a nice lens, but its slow to focus and you get an extra stop of light with the AF-S lens :)

Hi Darryl - just about to press the button on buying the F100 with the 28mm f/1.8 lens. Just a quick question if you don't mind. Would you know how and if the 28mm would work on the Nikon Z 6ii with the FTZ adapter? I see you used to shoot with the Nikon Z, though not too sure if that is still the case. Many thanks in advance for any guidance.
