How to remove the internal sensor filter on a Nikon Coolpix P1000
This modification will void your warranty, requires tricky desoldering/resoldering steps, and could result in a ruined camera. Do not attempt this if you're not willing to part with it. The flash capacitors in cameras are no joke and you can receive a nasty shock if extreme care isn't taken.

Thanks brother. Just did this. This afternoon. What a nightmare with the soldering. I had no Flux paste so I used Vaseline! I was able to get it after 2hrs. I did my p900 took me under an hour no soldering and simple But glad I did this thank you! 😊

Yeah, man those little pins are a pain and that flash capacitor scared the heck out of me. Will you be using an external filter to get the regular colors back if you want to take normal pictures or are you using software to correct the colors if needed? If so please let me know which one, I've needed to take some regular zoomed images but haven't been able to use the P1000 for them.

Hello Yuri, Thank you for commenting and encouragement. Removing the filter to capture the full light spectrum doesn't really change what you see at night too much. Moon light and the Sun's light especially make for some interesting pictures and videos. The luminary videos and pictures have not been stacked.

Hello Smokey J'S Diesel, Thank you for your kindness. Yes, that's right, since the celestial bodies are in motion around Polaris you're going to need a purchase a star tracker. And camera ball mount. The ball mount allows you to position the camera at whatever you wish to photograph or video and the star tracker moves everything mounted to it at the same pace the sky moves. @@SMOKEY-JAYS-DIESEL Great job, completing the mod. It takes a great deal of courage and persistence to get through it. I hear you, Dealing with those pins is a pain, for sure and discharging the flash capacitor prior to working with the soldering gun is a good idea. It startled me pretty good when I accidentally touched those pins together. Enjoy your full spectrum conversion!

Hey Victor. Seems to me that this filter is mostly for the ultra violet light and less for infra red. Have you managed to get a normal looking picture with daylight using color correction? Have you tried to put an external UV filter on the camera? You know one of the cheap Chinese UV filters. Does it look closer to normal? Have you tried using the camera at night with a UV flashlight (Blacklight)? If you don't have a blacklight my suggestion is to take a blacklight which has a visible light (Zwb2) filter. I think those look way cooler. How does it look? Speaking of Zwb2 filters you can buy one from Aliexpress for couple of dollars. It would be cool to see how only UV light looks like. Of course it's only 42mm on diameter but that's enough for telephoto. Of course the question is how will you mount it, probably your best bet is to buy a set of step down rings from Banggood or Aliexpress. Have you tested the IR by photographing a hot object at darkness, like a hot stove? How does it look? Unfortunately I dropped my bag with my P1000 inside. It was at my hip height but still the damage to the camera was more than I expected. Outside was fine but it had stopped working. I disassembled it (not as far as you did) and found out that a cable had disconnected. I fixed it but it wasn't the only issue. The stabilizer was also damaged. I mean without stabilizer it works fine but you kinda need a stabilizer for a camera like this don't you? I'll follow your steps tomorrow and hopefully I'll find that something else is disconnected and the stabilizer will start working properly again :P

Hello James, Thank you for commenting. It's an IR cut filter. I'm not sure if it also blocks UV. I haven't looked into adding any external filters to make the day pictures look as they did prior to the modification. The camera is dedicated to night photography of the celestial bodies. I learned pretty quick that I needed sky tracker on a tripod with its axis pointed at Polaris to move the camera assembly at the same pace the sky does. I appreciate the suggestion about looking for Chinese filter suppliers. It would be super cool to only capture IR images.

How different are the full spectrum shots of the planets to their regular counterparts? Any more detail?

Hi Tom, Thank you for commenting. I haven't noticed any difference when recording video of the wandering stars. The Moon's colors are slightly different. The biggest change I've seen is in the daylight. Lots of amazing colors visible. My biggest interest for doing the conversion was to capture infrared. Best of luck with your mods!

@I'm Hello I'm, Thank you for commenting. My reason for making it full spectrum was for astro photography but if you plan on using it to take normal pictures then you'll need a full size screw on version of the filter removed to reverse the full spectrum mod. The filter is around $200+ dollars. Unless you have a specific reason for wanting full spectrum, I wouldn't remove the tiny filter. My wife complains about our expensive camera making everything pink. I think it's kinda cool but she doesn't. Best of luck with your mods!

Do you think you get better image performance when shooting Jupiter and the moon?
@vbared
@vbared Жыл бұрын
Hello Brent, Thank you for commenting. At night there isn't much difference because of the absence of light so the luminaries in the sky don't look much different to me. The Moon will look pinkish but its colors can be corrected using light setting on the camera. The biggest color differences are during the day when all the spectrums of light are present. If you're planning on using the camera for infrared then don't modify it because the infrared filters won't work on it if the full spectrum passes through it. I'm currently interested in shooting infrared using a filter and learned that I would need add an external filter like the tiny one inside the camera to get the full spectrum before the infrared one. They are very expensive. I'm sure infrared can be isolated using software but I haven't learned how to do it yet. Best of luck with your mods!

Still haven't figured out everything on this p1000 yet. But how do you get Saturn to come in with that amount of details. Can't figure out what setting I haven't done yet
@vbared
@vbared 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Tony, Thank you for commenting. It was pretty frustrating for me at first learning this camera. To capture video or pictures of the celestial bodies you will need some type of tracker to mount the P1000 to. What this will do it move the camera at the same rate that the celestial bodies above move so when you zoom in the objects don't move off the cameras view. This allows you the time to mess with the focus to get it as clear as possible. I'm no photography expert and still learning but keeping the camera steady and moving at the same rate as the lights in the sky is key. Below are the three accessories that I use. Sky tracker - amzn.to/3wRF19A Camera swivel adaptor - amzn.to/3tXr0oU Heavy duty tripod to mount it all on - www.lowes.com/pd/NWi-NWi-Contractor-s-Heavy-Duty-Aluminum-Tripod/1001349382 Best of luck with your new adventures!

I’d go with what he said star tracker manual mode shutter speed about 1/60 to 1/200 iso low enough you can still see the stars just without it grainy shoot in raw you’ll get better pics when you zoom in & make them a little brighter after manual focus . The changing focus is a pain tbh as are many settings keep your f stop low if not at full zoom the moon is different it’s bright as

Hello Bruno, Thank you for commenting. If I remember correctly the board that was soldered to the main board kept it from coming out of the camera housing.
