My observations regarding the Nikon D4 after some weeks of shooting here in 2021. Relative to mainly the Nikon D700. Notice that I do not try to bash the D700 - I just need a reference point to compare the Nikon D4 to.

@@nickfanzo D6 should have been a D5s. But Nikon didn't follow their usual update cycle, and from what I understand the D6 caused a lot of folks to go to Sony and Canon. I see some of them coming back due to the Z9, so hopefully Nikon has learned from their mistakes.

Excellent content - still use 2 D700s to shoot events and sports, big fan of the D4 / Df sensor also. An advantage of lower pixel sensors sometimes ignored for sports and events is that camera shake is less of an issue - when the D800 came out the recommendation was that it not be shot lower than 1/500th.

@@frederikboving Well, as of yet I have only offered it to my friends at the same price I bought it for, but nobody has given me any serious offers. I guess I wouldn’t mint having it along with one of the pancake primes to keep as a back pocket camera. Just bought a light used Nikon D4 (actually says Well used but looks pretty good overall). After hour and hours of reviews and pixel peeping the output. I have to say the colors from the Nikon D4 are just amazing with proper glass on it. I also use the Peak Design "Slide" and "Clutch" I plan to buy more anchors and the "Capture" clip and "Pro Pad" for second camera holding vs two camera strap setup. Right now, I just lay down the second camera and sling the D4 with 70-200mm 2.8 tele. I was actually looking for a good used D700 and saw that the D4's have finally fallen below the $800 barrier I tend to purchase under. Cannot wait to get this thing out and shoot. Thanks for the review.

I like your channel. You keep it short and sweet and to the point. Be careful of quoting Tony Northrup because his advice is alot of times mixed. I like Tony's channel and do subscribe, but I sometimes take him with a grain of salt like alot of other KZfaqrs. Tony is still under the impression that you shouldn't use crop sensors bodies like a d500 and under with full frame lenses because you don't get all of the quality out of the lens, which is absolutely false.
@frederikboving
@frederikboving 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you SV, noted! In general, my advice to anyone is to use many sources of information, compare them and be critical. My channel included - it is just one more source of information. I am with you when it comes to being puzzled why TNs claim that FF lenses on APSC bodies is a no-go - you are just using the best part of the lens, right? But in general I find his channel and methodology solid, if you ignore his constant sale of their books (I have bought one and it is quite good!). And the video about color science I find to be a milestone in making the point how much psychology and subjectivity there is in color rendition and color science - an eye opener when you have seen how strong opinions there are out there about color science.

Frederick On my D850 I remapped the joystick in the custom controls f1 setting so that when you press in on the joystick, it becomes a Auto Focus Grp button. I therefore have at the tip of my thumb a single point AF button (normal AF ON button, back button focus) and, by just sliding my thumb a centimeter, a Group AF on button. This works very well. I would assume the D4 has the same option. Try it.

Great video thank you. Can you tell me what the shutter count expectancy is on the D4 please
@frederikboving
@frederikboving 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Wayne, I have not seen any official numbers from Nikon, but rumors has it that a fair life expectancy is around 400.000 actuations. Beyond that, it is probably a bit of a lottery. Some of the enthusiast level DSLRs from Nikon with a life expectancy around 150.000 actuations are often reported pass 300.000 before they go belly up. So with a bit of luck, you may be able to go beyond the 400.000 with the D4. Notice that some D4S are so young that Nikon still services these cameras - I believe the limit is 10 years. I think this to some extend explains why the D4S often is much more expensive than the D4. Hope this helps.

Hi Fred, great video. I have a D700 and just acquired a minty D4 with 276 shots taken , so it’s like new. Can you tell me a good way to store the camera for long periods , as I don’t need to worry about the internal clock battery dieting completely (as it’s user replaceable unlike my D700) can I store in a Pelicase with silica gel through the winter ? Or is that a bad idea ? Thanks
@frederikboving
@frederikboving 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks David! Wow! A D4 with 276 clicks! That is nothing short of AMAZING! Well done! With regards to storage of your camera, I am no expert. I cannot let my cameras leave be for long periods of time. I do however understand that humidity is the biggest enemy when it comes to camera storage (other than the obvious of keeping the temperature reasonable and not throw the camera around!). So your idea with silica gels seems right to me - how much is needed is however not my forte! With regards to the battery I am no expert either (start to see a trend here?) but I do know that for my lawn mover robot they recommend that you store it for the winter with the batteries fully charged. Maybe that advice can also be applied to a camera? Not sure. Hope someone else reads this post and can chip in with some insights that can help. All the best!
@mistergiovanni7183
@mistergiovanni7183 10 ай бұрын
Hi David, with your permission I will tell you what I investigated and what an easy and cheap solution I found. As Frederic says, one on the worts enemies is humidity and the other is darkness. Both are sufficient conditions for growth of fungi. If you consult the internet, you will see that they agree to maintain humidity conditions below 65 percent to avoid fungus. There are specifics cabinets for lenses or photographics gear equipment they are expensive and maintain a humidity range between 30 and 50 percent what can you choose. These equipments are connected to the electrical network and have a hygrometer which precisely measures the value of ambient humidity. The cheap version of this is to buy a clear plastic airtight box buy a hygrometer separately (it comes with a battery and they are very cheap) and buy a small anti-humidity system that is sold in supermarkets and that they use for closets. With this system I have been maintaining humidity levels of around 50 percent for 2 years. It is important that the glasses that you keep do not have any of the caps so that reflected sunlight can reach them. UV rays, even if they are reflected (never direct), also contribute to the fact that the fungus does not have a favorable environment. Do not exaggerate with the anti-humidity system because very low levels of humidity are not good either, since they could dry out some components. Best regards.

Hi Frederik, thank you for yet another informative video on a great Nikon camera (you're triggering my NAS). I see that you use an AF-D lens on your older body in this video (the 35-70), but you use an AF-S lens on the D4. Did you feel that the older lens does not keep up with it? (I bought a second hand AF-D 28-70, to go with my ancient second hand D700, because I felt I shouldn't use my dx lenses in the crop mode). I think they look great, except for at 28mm which as expected has a lot of barrel distortion, which I haven't been able to correct in Capture NX-D or NX Studio (or gimp or whatever) yet. I used to be a whatever the camera produces is what it is kind of guy, but I'm slowly evolving (if you have any tips on this that do not require Lightroom that would be great!). Anyway, just some ramblings, keep up the good work!

Hi Panagiotis! Thanks for your post! I have started to invest in G-series lenses anticipating a shift to the Z-series in the coming years. As you probably know, the Z-series has no motor built into the body nor the FTZ adaptor, so on a Z-camera you are left with manual focus if your lens has mechanical focus system (AF). I still love my old lenses, but I also like the comfort of auto focus! I am a Lightroom guy! Some months back my computer started crashing and restarting every 2 minutes for no apparent reason. It was so frustrating to try to recover the PC with 2 minutes to work in and then a re-boot. I eventually found out that the problem was solved when I uninstalled Capture NXD. Since then I have stayed with Lightroom to keep things simple. Take care!

@frederikboving
@frederikboving 2 жыл бұрын
It is built for speed. No doubt about that. But I love the color rendition, and I use it for landscape photography. Absolutely not what it was made for, but I do not mind. It is a great allrounder, but so is say the D750 that I also love. The D750 is not as big and bulky as the D4, but it gets the job done and it is my preference for product photography. Not sure exactly why, but it is just a very easy camera to work with - it does what I ask it to do and it does not talk back. The D4 is also a great camera, but in terms of size and weight, I find that it is a bit big and bulky for my small studio. So we are back to personal preference criteria, and here you of course are the king when it comes to what works for you. All the best!

Today a few years later I am not sure the D4S is serviced anymore and I would expect the price difference to be less today.

First of all may I say how much I enjoyed listening to your views on the Nikon D4 - a beautiful clear accent - and you keep it simple which I found refreshing . I currently have a Nikon D7000 but I've had it for 10 years and I've taken around 130k shots on it [ still going strong ] - I'm not sure whether to buy a D500 , D750 , D800E , D850 or a D4s -maybe even a D7200 . I only have Lightroom 6 , I'm in my late 60s so my next camera may be my last - the D4s will probably outlive me but is heavy , I'd need to invest in a different remote , spare battery will be more expensive as will be an XQD card - the D750 has the same battery as the D7000 as has the D500 I believe - I'm not sure about the D850 and its large files , same almost applies for the D800E - it's between the D4s , D750 and D500 but I'm open to ideas / comments . My main interest is Landscape but I'm open to Bird Photography , Flowers , Macro . I'm drawn to the D4s for longevity , autofocus and that it's compatible with LR6 , just the weight and extras putting me off . My lenses are a mixture of DX and FX , mostly DX but I'm happy to invest in FX .

Hi Peter, thank you for your kind words! The D4 is indeed a heavy camera, and you have to test it before you take the plunge. It is not an easy thing to swing around. The D7200 is a great camera - I have seen grown men cry when they parted with that camera; I have not shot with it myself, but it sure has got a very dedicated fan base. The D800-ish I stay clear of - maybe not fair, but there was something with an oil issue, so I have not ventured into that camera for this reason. I have the D750 and I really like it - it is a camera super easy to use and it does exactly what you tell it to. But there is no "magic" like with the D700 or an extra skill like the AF speed with the D500. So it may leave you a bit disappointed. The D850 is a mothership of all DSLR's and it does produce large files. But I believe you can ask it to reduce the file size if that is an issue. But maybe a bit silly driving a Porche and using as if it was a Suzuki Swift. The D500 has excellent reviews when it comes to AF and I believe even today the AF is some of the best Nikon has ever produced - so if you shoot BIF at close distances, the D500 may be attractive for that reason. Hope this has confused you on a more informed level!

@@frederikboving Thank you for taking time out to reply to an old man who's unsure of his next move !! The D750 seems the obvious choice , I had the opportunity to buy one with just 3k on the clock but turned it down thinking the D810 might be the camera I wanted - then I looked at the D500 because of its awesome AF - IF I go modern I'll have to drop my LR6 and start subscribing so I'm trying to keep my choices down to what my LR6 is compatible with - I could have bought a D4s for around £1100 the other day but I'm old and have mobility problems so a heavy camera along with heavier lenses probably isn't a good idea - I guess what's bothering me is the thought of choosing the incorrect camera - spending say £800 on a D810 when another £800 could get me a D850 - I'm going round in circles . I can see myself buying a D750 + a D7200 then I could still use my LR6 - but I might invest in a D850 and damn the consequences ...I just don't know . I shall continue to watch your videos while I make up my mind . Thank you , Frederik .

@@peterwilliams6114 Peter, as they say in the espionage industry: if there is doubt, then there is no doubt. In other words: if you cannot make up your mind, there is a reason for that, and you need to trust your intuition. So please don't rush or be annoyed that you are taking your time to make a decision. My best advice is to put the decision to a side for a while. Focus on photography with the D7000. One day you will wake up with a fresh perspective on things. Or maybe you will read something somewhere that will give you a small heureka moment. And piece by piece the number of meaningful options will be reduced, and the way forward will start to materialise. Choosing the right camera is often a ping-pong game where it is difficult to figure out how many pings and pongs are needed. So take your time. And btw, I am not 17 either 🙂 Take care Peter!

Hey Frederik, I've got a question. I'm a semi-professional car photographer, I take photos of bikes and drag racing and high end cars, but I also love shooting sports as it is how I got into professional photography. Would you consider the D4's megapixel count good for sports photography? does megapixel count even matter when shooting on a Nikkor 70-200 / Nikkor 200 / 500? I love a big camera, so the weight and size is actually a plus, and the illuminated buttons seem really useful as I'm always in manual when shooting at the track at night.

I wonder, could you check the DK-17M attachment to your D4? I have the DK-17M on a D4s, and I find that (apparently …) the DK will not unscrew with the camera eyepiece cover open. The DK seems to rotate, but in fact it is just the rubber cover and metal ring rotating. This is potentially a great way to avoid accidentally losing a DK (which I have, on another camera ….). It is. I had a D5600 as my very first DSLR, and it served me really well. You should be aware that the D5600 comes without a built in AF motor, and that means that AF glass (with mechanical AF) will not have auto focus sitting on the D5600. You are left with manual focus in those cases. I have a blog post where I talk about the D5600: frederikboving.com/nikon-d5600-still-a-good-buy-as-an-entry-level-camera-in-2019/ I also have a few videos about the D5600: kzfaq.info/sun/PLPjooVCTLG93H0GRJcvg6UdEV5Ivm1Ozk - Also take a look at the Nikon Z50. It is a good alternative. It is mirrorless and is designed with the new Z-mount (i.e. only takes Nikons glass designed for this mount unless you buy an adaptor). If you do not want to go with vintage glass and "just" want a good all round camera, then this could be an alternative to consider.

@frederikboving 2 жыл бұрын
Fernando, the D4S is a wonderful camera that will serve you well, and it is a better camera than the D90 in almost every aspect. However, there are 2 things to consider: (1) Size/weight! The D4S is a heavy beast and size wise it is almost 60% taller than the D90! If you are at a concert where you need to lift the camera to your eye constantly for several hours, the weight of the camera could be an issue! Also, if you have small hands, operating the D4S is not that easy, so make sure you try before you buy! (2) Focal range. The D4S is full frame and although you have FF glass as you write, the focal range of your lenses drops by 33%, i.e. a lens that is 75mm on your D90 is now 50mm on your D4S. This gives you less reach with the same lenses. I could imagine this could be an issue at concerts, unless you of course get the VIP tickets close to the band! Hope this helps!

Abou the focal lenght, can be a trick change indeed, eventhough I fight against the crop factor, because I 'never are far enough', because my 50mm, 24-70mm or 70-200mm are, in fact, 75mm, 36-105mm and 105-300mm. @@fenanzer Thank you Fernando! If you want to stay with APS-C, then take a look at the D7100 and the D7200. I have never owned one, but those who do seem to absolutely love these cameras. It might be hard to find a good copy with not-too-many shutter actuations. A Nikon D500 is a classic APS-C, and although made for speed (sports, wildlife), it is also recognized as a super camera in general. Not the cheapest camera, but maybe one of the best APS-C DSLRs Nikon has ever made. Good hunt! Please share what you end up deciding! All the best!

I’m about to switch from a d850 to a very well kept d4s. I just can’t connect with the d850 files, there’s too much going on. Respect to its capability. I have a df which is marvellous for a carry around. So good that it got me thinking about the d4s as my main. Am I crazy for swapping?
@frederikboving
@frederikboving Жыл бұрын
Hi Michael, thank you for an interesting question: You are not crazy, but be prepared for a change. I have never owned the D850, but understand that it is a great camera with a very high resolution. The D4 not so much - 16 MP. So if you crop a lot, this could be an issue. The D4 is a big and heavy camera with a built in battery grip. Relative to the D850, I would imagine it is a big change. So I would test the D4S and hold it in my hand before buying. If you spend a lot of hours with your camera, this could be a deal breaker. Finally, although I don't know the color rendition for the D850, be prepared to fall in love with the color rendition of the D4. I don't know if it is my style of shooting with lots of sunsets etc, but I absolutely love the D4 colors. I know it was built for speed and nobody praises the colors, but I do: flic.kr/s/aHsmUeP5Y5

@@frederikbovingI have got a D4 now and it didn’t have the rubber eyepiece at all but I have a D700 and changed the rubber over, love the flagship feel just need to fine tune the autofocus because it’s not as sharp as I want with some lenses, but it’s had about 140,000 shutter actuations so I will just wing it with the fine tune, since I can turn it on and off I don’t see any problem with finding a good target and just trying it, I did my first burst experiment with a flying bird today got 4 usable shots out of 8 pictures very happy with the handling, with a bit of practice I can see me being able to change any settings immediately I’m glad I got it and I got it by swapping a Minolta A7 film outfit for the body I was actually making an enquiry about a D750 and asked the trader if he wanted to buy my Minolta lenses and he said “what about the A7 body I’m a Minolta fanboy and I don’t have that one” so we hatched out a swap and he went on holidays to Asia and picked up a D4 body and we swapped 😊

I have the opportunity to get a D4 with 38K clicks for 1400 euro but not sure to pull the trigger. I have actually enough gear (D850, D810, D800, D700, D500) but still it is tempting to have a D4. I am not a fan of the Z cameras and Nikon will not bring out any new dslr's I guess. My mind says no but my heart says yes.
@frederikboving
@frederikboving 2 жыл бұрын
The heart and mind often struggles. If you have the D850, you have probably seen the best DSLR that Nikon has ever built - and will ever build. The D780 closes the door to DSLRs, I think. The D4 is outstanding in 3 ways of you ask me: (1) the build quality, (2) ergonomics and (3) the color rendition. The latter was a big surprise to me, but the camera renders color in a way I have seen with no other camera. You can see here if you agree: flic.kr/s/aHsmUeP5Y5. In terms of ergonomics, I find that it is an outstanding camera. Yes, big and bulky, but also very easy to work with. The combination of the D4 and say a 70-200mm is so heavy that it is not my first option when I have to travel via train or bicycle to be honest. But can I drive close to the shooting location, then it is less of an issue. But know that the D4 is heavy and big. Finally, the D4 can take a lot of beating. I was recently shooting in a storm with salt water waves rolling in, and the D4 took it with no complaints - no need to wrap it in plastic. You can see the video here: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/brqhec-TqZiRc5s.html. Hope this helps! All the best!

@@frederikboving Yes the D850 is indeed the best DSLR around and difficult to surpass. The weight and bulkiness of the D4 would not be a problem. I have some heavy glass laying around and you do not put a big lens on a small body. Well I don't. The 16MP sensor is more than enough, I do even landscapes with my 12MP D700. I will struggle until tomorrow and then make up my mind. Thanks!👍

DOES NIKON REPLACE SHUTTERS D4?

I do not have a direct line to Nikon and their policy making in this area, but my understanding is that Nikon on average supports a camera for 10 years with repairs and spare parts. And then no more. So I think the chances are slim, unfortunately.
