Should you use the Nikon D500 for video recording? Yes, yes and another YES! It is capable of some amazing video once you learn how to set it up and use it. This is my preferred method of use and setup.

Thank you for this great video. I wonder if there is a way to use the video feature on a moving subject where it is getting closer or farther from me. How would I focus and keep it sharp while the recording continues?

Pretty similar to the way I shoot video. At 8:00 you switch it over to image mode though, which is really an unnecessary added step. You can just leave it in video mode, turn off live view, focus through the viewfinder and switch right back to shooting video. Also, if you don’t touch the any of the AF buttons or screen when shooting video, setting the lens to manual really isn’t necessary either. I could see setting the lens to Manual focus as a real detriment if you are switching between shooting video and stills rapidly (which I do a lot). Leaving the lens in AF/M alleviates the need to switch the lens back to AF/M. Everyone has their own process though and if yours works for you, well, then it works ;)

Thanks for the compliments and I am glad you are getting something out of the videos. If I can manage to help people enjoy photography as much as I do, then I have succeeded! I have had others ask the same thing, especially in reference to Lightroom and how I post process my images. I'll have to choose a few images and make some videos on them. I was also just thinking of a book along the same lines where I talk about everything that went into the story behind shooting the image and the post processing too. Show a before and after as well. Maybe even highlight some were I made mistakes so others could avoid the same mistakes. A book could be thought of as a companion to the videos. I'm trying to find a happy medium between the amount of content, color printing and favorable pricing on the book part.

Nice video and the images are superb. I didn't have any luck video recording a live event with motion since the screen had so much glare on it. I miss my analog video camera form the 80s that had an electronic monitor and I was able to see exactly what the camera was recording. I suppose dedicated video cameras today do that. My D500 is primarily for stills so it's not a deal breaker but I wish there was a way to record video thru the viewfinder.
@MarkSmithphotography
@MarkSmithphotography 7 жыл бұрын
Thanks and I agree with you. I know you can attach and external monitor with a hood as to reduce the glare. I've seen serious video people do this with other DSLRs. That's more investment though. I have done a lot of video with the D500 and for the most part, it works really well when you have time to set everything up. If you had to grab some action that was happening really quickly as in lasting only a few seconds, it would be tough to do.

Hi Mark, Thanks for yet another good video I’m going to Grand Teton/ Yellowstone/ Arches in May 10th to May 21th to photograph geyser, buffalo, bears, mountain goats and Landscape, pretty much everything ;-) and to do a video diary. And then to Tampa Bay May 22th to May 26th where I hope to photograph some Pelicans and other wildlife while my wife is at the beach getting her tan. I plan to buy the Nikon D500 with battery grip and put on my nikkor 80-400 f4.5 to 5.6 and my nikkor 24-70 f 2.8 On my Nikon d610 I will put the nikkor 24-120 f 4 and buy in addition the nikkor 18-35 f 3.5 to 4.5 Further I would buy the Sony FDR AX55 handy cam because I’m not familiar with video and it is hand held, has gimbal image stabilization, a super zoom and a super autofocus with face recognition. However I’m afraid i will be carrying too much equipment and having seen your video, it stroke me that maybe the Nikon D500 and our IPhone X can do the video just fine. What do you think about that? PS: I liked your first book, so I bought the second one too. Hopefully it is already in the mail. Best regards, Mikkel

Hi there, I second the comments of many on here. A very helpful video from a D500 users point of view. My setting have now been changed from a flat profile, the little test i did today looked better. Mark - thanks so much! Love your videos! So easy to understand and love the way you go over what you have said. How long can you do 4K video on the D500? Is there is time limit? Also - what tripod do you use. I love that Manfrotto 393(?) and would like to purchase it with a nice tripod. Thanks for any help!
@MarkSmithphotography
@MarkSmithphotography 7 жыл бұрын
Thanks so much for the compliments. The D500 is limited to 30 min consecutive clips and after that, whatever your memory card can handle. If you record only a minute of video and then start a new clip, you have another 30 minutes as long as your memory card has space. My tripod is the weakest link. It is an older Manfrotto that has been discontinued. An upgrade is next on my list. I have my eye on an Induro without the center shaft and the Manfrotto 393 is excellent!

Mainly interested in stills but I could imagine the day and really some of what you showed us pertains to stills in some circumstances too.

Cool tips, thanks, I always forget the screen is touchable, had the cam over 6 months haha. One tip to offer... you don't need to switch out of video mode to focus, just come out of live view., focus in viewfinder, then back to live view. One less thing to worry about! It's fiddly enough as it is. Just did my first proper kingfisher vid with the d500, focus was a pain but quality is excellent.

@MarkSmithphotography
@MarkSmithphotography 7 жыл бұрын
+Floyd Bond Great question. I'm not sure I would use the d500 for video and birds in flight, at least not with tight shots. Following them would be real difficult at least my skill level. I think any quick panning would also introduce rolling shutter which would also be a problem. Perhaps if you had some straight side to side shots it would work but it would require some great camera panning skill. I could be totally wrong on all of this. I only speak from my own experience.

Question: During video, can the D500 refocus on its own, or only by user interaction? I may be focused on a subject, but when I pan across a scene my camera will not refocus on what is now at the focus point of the display until I do it myself (touchscreen, AF-ON button, etc). It seems a huge drawback if I have to constantly be refocusing manually as I pan or change subject in the field of view. I must be missing something.

Hey Mark. I love terns, the small gulls (guess you know'em). But those birds are small and erratic, how would you go about filming them? Keeping them in the liveview monitor, I would imagine is pretty difficult and they'd probably keep flying in and out of fokus. How do you track moving subjects? Thanks for the videos, they are the best. Got the same setup as you, D500 + 200-500, got a D800 also (I know yours a D810)
@MarkSmithphotography

+MadsHilde Yeah they are really difficult to follow. Honestly, smaller fast moving birds are tough. I go for the smallest aperture as possible with the available light and hope they stay within the plane of focus. It is really a gamble.

First, thank you for a nice video. It was helpful That is/was my question. When I am out with people using Bridge cameras, they always get nice videos of birds. eagles etc that are moving. I shoot a bunch of stills with a long lens and then switch to video. I end up with something that is in and out of focus. This might be the wrong tool for action videos, and that is ok, I just needed to know that.

Do these techniques work on the d7500 as well? I am considering this camera but I am not satisfied with manual focus only. How's the subject tracking feature in 4K video performing? Does it hunt a lot or it is usable? Thanks.

Ok two questions: How do you do focus tracking? and the big one, how did you get your focus points to show on the screen when you switched from video to photo mode?! I've had my D500 for over a year and was positive that you could not get the focus points to show on the screen! Thank you!

I read a reply regarding focus tracking and now understand that it's probably impossible with the D500. My Lumiz GH3 was fantastic with video (of course) and now trying to use the 500 for video I'm like WTH! Definitely not made for video!

can you explain the use of ISO in this process. If you set 1/60 and F8 (I presume in Manual mode), then do you not want the camera to find the correct ISO during the set up - ISO at 100, in auto with a ceiling(max) set at some level?
@MarkSmithphotography
@MarkSmithphotography 6 жыл бұрын
I use the lowest possible ISO to get a decent exposure and I adjust it manually as I seem to need it. So if I setup to shoot and choose 1/60 and F8 with an ISO of 100, then I will shoot. If the scene is too dark, which it usually is not, then I raise the ISO manually until I get a good exposure. Make sense?

I'm looking to buy either the D500 or D720...I want to be able to shoot 4k video with a DLSR which is so much less "intrusive" than shooting with a video camera...which one do you think will give me the best video quality. Your video was very helpful. Thanks - Mike Meyer, Columbus, Ohio
@MarkSmithphotography
@MarkSmithphotography 6 жыл бұрын
+Mike Meyer Did you mean a d7200? It doesn't shoot 4k. The d500 does but shooting video on it is more difficult than say a traditional camcorder. You have more control with the d500 but with that control comes a learning curve.

Sorry...I meant the D750. I think it shoots 4k and it's sensor is not cropped...but I think it is much older than the D500 and is not as robust. I'm looking for a DSLR that shoots good quality 4k video that I can use in situations where shooting with a video camera is problematic. I'm familiar with shooting video with Canon 5D Mark II...which I love, but Canon doesn't seem to offer anything shooting 4k in a $2k price range, I think. Thanks for your help
@MarkSmithphotography
@MarkSmithphotography 6 жыл бұрын
I don't think the D750 shoots 4k video either. Canon has better autofocus for video. The autofocus tracking for video on Nikon doesn't really work well. You would have to do manual focus. The D7500 does 4k video but it is crop. The only full frame Nikon for 4k is the D850, I think.

I'm looking at cameras myself, I don't own one or used one before, however I have researched a lot. Shooting video quality in 4K is good in Nikon cameras, but if you have action and moving shots, the autofocusing system is terrible and worst in such cameras. Nikons are good for photos, or static footage, see how there's no camera movement in the video. Canon has the best autofocus system, however their technology is very old, and still use old types of memory and etc. Plus many of their cameras only shoot 1080p or 4K with a crop.This is why, if I had the money, I'd look at the Sony a7riii mirrorless camera. It has Full Frame 4K and has better autofocus than any Nikon. The canon still edges it on autofocus, but Sony has some of the latest tech inside their cameras, and the focusing is very usable. The only drawbacks are the price for both the lenses and body, and the limited range of lenses available, but more lenses are being developed and released in the future.

Really good and really helpful. I find the main problem is bright light so you can’t see the LCD very well. Also, surely if you are using the method you suggest to switch to the viewfinder and then autofocus on a single point you don’t need to switch back to manual mode do you? Surely if you switch back to video to shoot the scene you’ll have already grabbed focus on a single point. Therefore it will remain in focus on that point.? Here’s a question though...can you focus track video? Say there’s an animal standing still and you switch to still modem look through viewfinder, focus and then switch back to video mode to record it, once you’ve started recording if the animal moves will the camera focus track it in video? Anyway, great video and thanks.

I appreciate your efforts in this tutorial, but why would you send your 4K video to an sd card that may be able to write 90mb/sec but send your still photos to an xqd card that writes 400 mb/sec? That is backwards. That xqd slot was INTENDED for 4k video which writes a monstrous amount of data per second.
@MarkSmithphotography
@MarkSmithphotography 6 жыл бұрын
Actually, according to the SD card manufacturer, the specific SD card I am using can easily handle 4K video with room to spare.

This is a video that showcases how I use the D500. I never once suggested that the way I set things up is the "right" way. I simply state, "This is how I do it." You or anyone else is free to use the various options anyway you see fit. I'm glad you have a different opinion on the matter and thanks for posting it. It will help others understand there is always more than one way to get things done.

drk321 Wrong. The xqd card is there for the 200 raw file, 10 fps burst. It's almost as if you don't know what you're talking about. Recording 4K video takes about 18 MB per second. However, the D500 can shoot 43 MB raw files at 10 per second. That's 430 MB per second compared to the paltry 18 MB for 4K video. It can shoot 200 of them before the camera stops you (however you can release the shutter and immediately press it again to continue). So for 20 seconds of still photos it takes 8.6 gigabytes, or 8600 megabytes, whereas 20 seconds of 4K video only takes 360 megabytes.
