Thanks. I know rail I think is the way to go. It just gets awkward sometime in the weird angles. I'm wondering if a smallish monopod with legs might work for that

Yep photoshop does a good job of lining up the subject. Without a steady focus rail that's the next best option for me. It's not perfect but it does a pretty good job with the stack for about 10 images max for me. Nothing much more than that

Thanks Bud. I was actually enjoying the optical view finder from using the EVF for so long. I think will be back to using the D500. Plus the files are way more manageable

Interesting, I sometime try to use this method too. Just I wonder why you just shoot forward and stop vs shooting continuous forward and backward in the same sequence, D500 buffer could take it, less time loss thus less risk to see the insect take off before the end of stacking sequence, and maybe one row of shots would be enough for wanted results. Best.

Hey Alan, yes you are absolutely right. I think the buffer can take it but then when I had too many images then photoshop was having issues lining up the images to stack. Im sure dedicated stacking software like zerene stacker could do much deeper stacks with the push of a button. I might just be too lazy to do manual adjustments in photoshop 😅 thanks so much for watching

@@forced_perspective Thank you, I didn't know PS would struggle with it. I didn't focus stack much yet and last time used a demo version of serene stacker, and when I did on PS, it wasn't many images since for landscape. Thanks for the insight... I'm in LA area too, I wished I'd see more insects for macro, there's not too many species I see, same with butterflies, painted lady or monarch occasionally but not much else. Hapy shooting...

@@forced_perspective Thank you James, Only tried with serene and when using my old PS, it was more for landscape, stacking only 3 or 4 pics... Didn't know PS could miss if too many pics in sequence. I got a d500 too, I'll have to try more macro with it since I also have the 105mm (got it all used on CL for a good price, although i mainly use the D500 for birding). Wish we'd see more insects in LA's streets gardens, but it's the climate I guess... Best.
