My thoughts on why the Nikon D7500 and the Nikon 200-500mm VR FX f/5.6 are the perfect match for wildlife photographers looking at an affordable setup to photograph wildlife; be it birds, lizards, marsupials or any other type of wildlife.

Gosh. This channel is so refreshing. I've tried watching multiple reviews, tests etc of this camera and the guys whose videos come up first..I just can't sit through the whole video. You're so calming to listen to and make me feel like I can actually use this camera and get results! Thank you!

Hello Charles...I really enjoyed your take on this combo! I used my D750 with the 200-500 with great results however I added the D7500 as a retirement gift to myself. My 200-500 is welded to the D7500 so my my D750 handles everything else. I carry both with me all the time. While birding/wildlife my D750 is setup for landscapes. Budget was not a factor in deciding between the D7500 and D500. For my needs the D7500 is just dandy! As a photographer for over forty years I know the D7500 is a winner! Cheers!

Charles many thanks for taking the time to go through your thoughts on your setup, and the tips in the body, it's put my mind at ease, as I have a D7200 and was going for a none Nikon lens as you mentioned, but the 200 to 500mm on a cropped scensor makes it 300 mm to 750 approx, and the quality will be so much better, you and so many others love this lens, so thank you again

Good review Charles, you presented nicely too. I love the Torresian Crow gargling in the background form a bout 2/3 way through. I totall agree with the 200-500/5.6, awesome lens. I had the Tamron 150-600 G1 prior to the Nikon, it was well known for becoming soft after 500mm so no real loss with the Nikon being limited to 500mm.

I have the same set up. Got the kit and lens in the early 2023 from the used market. Saved myself a huge amount. 7500 is a forgotten camera only because of its single card slot. But the quality of images combined with fast shutter speed, have to say, for wildlife this is the best set up in budget. Thanks for the video. It helped me a lot in choosing the kit.

I bought the D7500 just now. Very excited to get started taking pictures of wildlife and airports. I have a Nikon 70-300 but eventually I’d like a 400 or 500mm lens. I actually had a D3300 but sold it. That was years ago. Now, phones take excellent pictures but don’t compare to a DSLR with a nice tele lens.

Good review. I love the D7500. Lens wise, have been eyeing the 200-500, or alternately the 500 PF or 300 PF with TC 1.4 - decision between weight, size, and flexibility. My hand holding technique is also problematic, so the smaller and lighter PF lenses are attractive (also for travel by airline) but lose that zoom flexibility and versatility of the 200-500. Currently have the 70-300AP, whilst good, not enough reach for wildlife, sport or air shows.

I’ve been using my 200-500 for aviation photography for around 4 yrs and it’s an awesome lense. I wouldn’t mind the 600 or 800 reach, but free wielding weight becomes an issue. Had used a D7200 with it previously and the set up was heavy ( I don’t use a tripod). The D7200 is a solid shooter, but I was a noob using it. Traded it in for a D5500 and I love the touchscreen manipulation. Looking at the D7500

I had used my D7500 for nearly a year for wildlife photography with the Nikon 200-500mm and it was very good. The only reason I sold it and bought the Nikon D500 was that I wanted better/quicker auto-focus of birds in flight.

Hi Charles, I bought the D7500 after watching your videos. I went out shooting hundreds of photos with the 18-140mm kit lens. You are right, the D7500 is good, as good as you said. the pictures are also nice and sharp, taken with the suggested aperture of between f/8 and f/11. In certain conditions, it performed better than the D700, which I currently have. The dark shadow area shows plenty of details when recovered in post processing, which is something my full frame is not as good. I am really surprised. And the overall picture quality is very impressive. I am sure it will be better when taken with prime lenses. Thank you very much.
@CharlesNPhotography

Thank you very much for letting me know that my videos and advice have helped you. The D700 was a great camera in its day (2008>2012) But the more modern D7500 even though it's a crop-sensor camera has a much newer processor and has the same processor has the D500 allows you to shoot at much higher ISO and its dynamic range is also much better.

No! I never did try it with the D7500, but a friend of mine did and found the auto-focus speed did reduce considerably. Nikon don't recommend using a tele-converter with this lens for wildlife photography where the subject moves quickly.

I must agree that Nikon D7500 is very good. I just bought SIgma 100-400 f/5-6.3. Nikon was too expensive for me. The DOF preview can be realized by camera software, so I do not know why Nikon decided to remove this option.

Nice review thanks. Could you explain the difference between continueous focus and 3d tracking? I got the D7500 a few months back, I'm a novice so it's a great entry level camera for me and my budget. A lot of people knock it for only having one card slot but that's a non issue for me with cards being so reliable these days, as you also say. Also, it may only be 21 MP but it's the same sensor as it's bigger brother the D500 which is superb, and produces great results.
@CharlesNPhotography
@CharlesNPhotography 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Andy, Continuous focus and 3D tracking are 2 separate settings. To select AF-C (Auto-focus Continuous) you need to press the center of the button that controls the AF/M switch on the bottom left of the camera. Then using the rear dial you can select AF-5, AF-C AND AF-A). Then using the front dial you choose how many focus points you want the camera to use (5, d9, d21, d51, 3d, Grp, Auto). I use d9 for most of my wildlife photography and only use Grp (Group) if it's a bird in flight and they are close to me.

I restarted doing recreational photography with the d7500 and the two kit lens offered with it. I was able to visit a large retail store that had rows of different camera brands and models on display to see how the ones that I'd only read about, how they actually felt in my tiny hands..the d7500 was great. Ergonomically the Nikons do seem better than alot of other cameras, and it wasn't too hard on my pocket book. 2 1/2 years later I need to up my lens kit rather that up my mega pixels so I'm thinking nikon f mounts, if I ever get a Z mount, they have an adapter for that, so that's it, that's the ticket, the 200-500mm f5.6.

Yes, correct! when you use a long lens like the Nikon 200-500mm you attach the lens to the tripod, not the camera. You can break the lens mount on either the lens or your camera if you attach the camera to the tripod when you use a long lens.

Weight was the deciding factor for me. I tried a D500 but ended up buying the D7500 because, with a long telephoto lens attached, the weight of the D500 was too much to handle comfortably. The lighter D7500 was perfect, however, and I saw no difference in the photo quality. That should not be surprising because the cameras share the same optics. It's the extras that differ, like extra card slot, which I haven't missed.

I have this combo. It’s a bit 1 star 5 star, with the lens as the 1 star. It’s ok with a static subjects but movement completely throws it. It can’t cope with a gliding kite or even a swimming duck. My old 300/f4D is much better. I’m underwhelmed by Nikon atm. 4 years ago the D7500 I bought had to be replaced as the af was completely awry. I bought a Z5 earlier this year and, even after going back to Nikon, it still randomly overexposes and the animal eye af is unimpressive - it prefers to focus on a kestrel’s feathers than its eye. And now this lens. If it wasn’t for Thom Hogan’s advice not to switch, I’d be eyeing up a Fuji or Sony.

Sorry to hear that you've had problems with your Nikon 200-500mm f5.6 lens, but even when I had the Nikon D7500 I had no issues taking photos with the 200-500mm of fast moving birds, I was just limited to the slower AF speed compared to the D500 which is why I sold the D7500 and bought the D500. I haven't used the Z5 so can't comments on the accuracy of Animal eye AF, but I do know that apart from the Z9 all other Nikon Z cameras don't have bird eye AF.
