Great review. I also love the 70-180 for its size and capabilities (and lower price obviously). And I too bring the 14-30 with me. The 'missing' focal length between 30 and 70mm can be covered by bringing a 50mm prime. And pairing the 70-180 with a 1.4 TC, you are basically covering 14-252mm, which is great for such small and light lenses with great quality.

Definitely. Just doesn’t cover the wide angle needs, as mentioned.

24-200 f4-6.3 adding with 50 1.8 or single 70-180 2.8 ? Which should you prefer in a budget? Mainly i need it for low light and long zoom so?

Interesting question. Really comes down to what you shoot. I am often shooting at max zoom on moving objects (e.g. birds, boats, sports) in lower light conditions so I need the zoom and the speed. That equals the 70-180. But if that is not a need for you then the 24-200 +50 would work. The problem with just carrying the 70-180 is the lack of a wide angle option. That's why I travel with the 70-180 + the 16-30.

And while you are talking about the 70-200mm Z you are showing obviously photos taken with super-wide-angel lens like the 14-30mm ?! Btw - for me on the comparison-example you showed the Nikon is clearly sharper and separation between the subject and background is also clearly better from the Nikon compared to the Tamron !

Good Review, my Nikkor Z 24-200mm 4.6-6.3 lens broke on hiking trip in NC. I am looking for a replacement. I didn't think the sharpness was great on the 24-200. It was my go to lens for all occasion. The 70-200 S is out of my budget, and I am thinking the 70-180 would meet my needs. What are your thoughts?

Good timing with your question as I am just back from a month-long trip. If this is a lens you will be carrying around a lot, the 70-200 is -- regardless of price -- simply too big and heavy to lug around. I brought it along because it is super sharp but only used it when I was on a river boat, so essentially stationary. The 70-180 is the next best choice PROVIDED you will also be carrying a wide angle lens, or never need one. If you only carry a single lens, maybe wait to see if the widely rumored NIKKOR Z 28-400mm f/3.5-6.3 shows up in 2024.

Hello Carl, thanks for the quick respond. I have wide angle lens, Tamron 17-35mm f/2.8-4 F-mount and Sigma 17-50mm f/2.8 EX DC F-mount. Personally, I think the Sigma perform better than the Tamron, even on D7500. I am curious that the price would be for the Z 28-400 and if it would be APC-S or Full frame lens. I am happy with Z5, and got great when I traded in the D7500. The D750 and/or D7870 was out of my price range. Thanks again.@@CarlPugh
