Nikon P1000, P950, A1000 Wildlife Settings --- (2020)
MY STILL LIFE PHOTOGRAPHY CHANNEL:
/ @make_photographs_ever...
In this video I go over 7 settings that work for most small point and shoot cameras in photographing wildlife. Most people keep their camera settings to automatic mode, sadly this is not optimal in getting the best photo but more so an average photograph.
Although I have the Nikon P1000, A1000, and P950 any super zoom camera will work with the suggested tips in the above video. I have shot with Panasonic, FZ20, to FZ80, Sony and Canon super zooms and all perform very similar results.
If there is a demand, I will follow up this video with 2 more which focus on "USAGE" and "COMPOSITION".
Thanks and remember to subscribe !

Well done sir. I'm a long-time user of superzooms from the Canon S1 up to, now, the Canon SX70 and agree with everything you said. For years I've done most of the things you advised people to do in this video; but many people have no idea of how to get good images from a superzoom and you've done them a real service.

Just today I was wondering if the crazy high ISO settings I was getting with Shutter priority were part of why the birds' feathers are so noisy in all my pix. And now you've confirmed it all for me. Noise Reduction - Lowest setting, or off 4. Turn Down Exposure -0.3, -0.7, -1.0 5. ??? 6. Spot Metering - bright spot on bird 7. What's really weird is that I'm an amateur - but I've been using many of your tips automatically ever since I got my first camera 11 years ago. The spot metering wasn't on my first camera that I can recall, but I took to it immediately when I found it on my second camera. I also take multiple shots for perched birds, animals that are standing still, etc. The sports setting is fantastic for that - and everything stays in focus - it's almost a "can't miss" type thing. The subject can't be too close to use it, though. I use when getting the pic is more important than DOF. I also use flash during the daytime for close-ups to compensate for poor lighting. My brother gave me an LED lighting attachment that can be turned on and off, but it doesn't replace the flash by any means. Looking for a new camera - but cannot hold those little rectangular things due to arthritis - cannot hang onto those things. Also have vision problems so an EVF is essential. Thinking about the P950, though that's more than I wanted to pay. The Kodak I was willing to settle on zoom-wise didn't have an EVF, sadly, and Canon didn't upgrade its zoom from the last iteration or I would have gone for another Canon. There are precious few with a focus ring, which is on my wish list - not willing to go as high as the P1000 for that. Canon hasn't included one yet. Kodak has one, but I get the feeling the quality is inferior. I do get the impression that the heavier the camera (for similar models and different brands) the better the quality. Maybe that's just my imagination?
@MAKE_PHOTOGRAPHS_ANYWHERE
@MAKE_PHOTOGRAPHS_ANYWHERE 3 жыл бұрын
Yes I mean there is a difference between the p950 and p1000 in build quality. The manual zoom ring is great on the p1000. If I had to choose I would go all in on the p1000, even thou it is super expensive for a point and shoot. This is where we are at with photography sadly. These super x\zooms will probably get more expensive as less people want a bridge camera. The last 5 years we seen price hikes on all in one cameras along with full frame. Some would say the cheap / expensive waves of gear goes in cycles. I am not sure where we are at on this one.

@@MAKE_PHOTOGRAPHS_ANYWHERE I was thinking of comparing it to a competitor that's closer to the P950 in ability - for example the Kodak AZ901, with 90x zoom. It's about a full half pound lighter. I'm thinking the P950 would be a better camera. I'm more in the price range of the Kodak, actually, but would be willing to spend more for quality. The P950 is the absolute highest I can go. Thanks so much for the videos - beautiful results with these cameras!

Very useful, I haven't tried the settings on my p900 yet, but I will. As someone that bought the camera for record shots of birds, do I actually profit from those settings or they are good only in case you want beautiful photos in good conditions? My priority is to capture at least record shots good enough for identification or proof, and the only thing I would need is sharpness and speed.

@MAKE_PHOTOGRAPHS_ANYWHERE
@MAKE_PHOTOGRAPHS_ANYWHERE 3 жыл бұрын
Well under the best focus meaning the bird is closest to you at macro focus distance you can blur the background. What is more important than that is your background and how close it is to your bird. Meaning, I have even had full frame cameras like the a7riv and shot birds where the bird still has distracting sticks behind the bird. The p1000 can get some ok to decent bokeh if you plan out your shots. Bigger animals such as deer are really difficult to get any type of background blur unless the deer is super close and the background is like a few miles away. I hope this helps and thanks for watching.

Great video! thank you for sharing your experience. I recently got the P1000 and I mostly take photos in woodlands, when I first got the camera I took some sharp images for birds in my garden, but when I started to go to woodlands the birds were in distance so I had to use ~2500mm or more! The problem is images are not sharp, does using a long focal length range affect iq? If so what is the maximum focal length I can use without affecting quality? The other thing is that I try to follow the settings u have suggested but sometimes images are dark... what can do I to make it bright enough without losing quality 🤔
@MAKE_PHOTOGRAPHS_ANYWHERE
@MAKE_PHOTOGRAPHS_ANYWHERE 3 жыл бұрын
Baka, you will need to give it time to know your camera. First thing is for you to get confidence in your camera gear. Get a perfect setup. What I suggest, get a tripod and a bright day. Extend out your lens to 3000mm, 2500mm and shoot photographs to see what you can get in perfect conditions how sharp are the photos in perfect lighting on a tripod how is the resolution with the photo. Once you get a starting point then you know if something is less than perfect it is probably you and the setting. First I know my lens is sharp. So usually it is too slow of shutter speed for me to hand hold. I need to either brace the camera better or the subject like the bird moved. First thing is first remember you are shooting at an insane zoo range. Also, make sure you are not trying to photograph too far away, heat, dust get picked up in the camera as well and kill image quality. Stick with it. I have had 2 nikon p1000 both lenses were sharp. I have had 2 p900 both lenses were sharp. My p950 lens is sharp but harder to get photos because in my opinion it is the image stability. Keep at it and remember practice practice. It is not easy using these cameras for good results but it is possible.

David, thanks for watching. So some things to take into consideration. Weather will it be raining, wet, sand dirty,. Also will it be dark or low light. You can pick up a more solid dslr with a 300 maybe 400mm lens and a weather sealed dslr or at least a tougher camera. I notice you mentioned go pro so extreme sport came to mind and these 950 and p1000 are kind of fragile in that respect. If you can keep it clean and dry in decent light it can do the job for you. If you want to bang it around at all , wet, moist sand ect nope would look at a dslr or mirroless camera with a 100-300 lens if that is enough zoom?? Wish I could be more help...

Yes would be something that needs to be able to take with us on advertising sports but not really be using It well doing the sports . But something not too big that can fit in a bag easy and would be for both low light and day time but mostly day time . We mostly using are phones s21 ultra for its zoom but can't get best details when comes to fast moving rides at theme parks as some go up high and can get the close. So what modles should I be looking for and do you have any videos on them as I like the details you go in too

@@davidgibson6696 David wish I could be more help to you. You might not need the 2000mm zoom so you could go with more of a dslr approach for a more durable and better low light performance at almost the same price. Thinking nikon, canon with a 300mm lens ?? Low light better fast focus. I would try to purchase and test or rent something before jumping in since this seems like it could get iffy on what you want to do and the results you expect. Maybe a place that has a nice return policy ?? Just trying to help hope this makes works.

I’ve never ever used a camera like this in my life only phones. I got this today and kind of got the hang of it even manual focus. But this camera DOES NOT FOCUS WELL when I zoom in close to things????? My iPhone literally can zoom in closer and stay focused. Again I used the scrol wheel thingy to manually focus and it don’t go far enough down on the graphs wtf??? And auto focus yeah again it don’t work because it can’t go enough down
@MAKE_PHOTOGRAPHS_ANYWHERE
@MAKE_PHOTOGRAPHS_ANYWHERE 3 жыл бұрын
Hey Trending, yea check to make sure you are in macro mode ? Also make sure you are not on Manual Focus Mode only. I know there is a limit to how close you can focus but you should be able to do macro work with the camera. It depends on how much zoom you have zoomed out and how close you can get. At some point you will hit a break point where you have to zoom out and then you can get closer and the camera focuses. Try experimenting with the zoom to distance ratio. I have it a few limitations with the zoom to distance ratio a few times. Usually I can work around it thou by getting closer and zooming out . If I zoom all the way out I can get right on top of the subject like a dime for macro work ! Hope this helps, Also give the camera time. I after 15 years with point and shoots learn things. Take care.

Stafford Fuhs lol I don’t know what literally most stuff does I just bought it because I for some reason wanted one of the best optical zooming cameras there is even tho I’m not a photographer I think I need to try it in sunlight because I got it at 22:00 from amazon and only tried flash and no flash in my room and it seems flash images turn out stupidly better for some reason? Even tho I had a torch directly on the thing I was shooting the flash seems to idk do better quality maybe cuz the camera knows timing idk? I tried zooming into a street light and it did actually zoom close and focus so maybe it’s just my room objects and lighting it can’t focus properly Other than that all I do is have it in the auto mode like the scroll wheel thing on the green camera icon. Then Switch the uh small rotatable dial to manual focus and use the scroll wheel on the left to focus as that’s all I know what to do

@MAKE_PHOTOGRAPHS_ANYWHERE

not substantially better. I mean if you are getting bad results which is subjective due to users opinions. I am afraid if I suggest the a1000 you would be disappointed. The image quality is slightly better but not worth totally upgrading. If you want to make a large image quality leap look towards bigger cameras. Also watch my super zoom shoot-out as I compare images of all these cameras under perfect condition. Give your camera time and make sure it is the camera and not the auto setting messing it up.

First, let me say that your videos are really good and love the effort you put into it. Secondly, I've been using the Sony DSCH300 for birding. I was happy with its zoom for shooting bird videos and pictures. However, the time it takes to find the bird through the display, zoom in and then start shooting is slow and the bird would have flown by that time. So recently borrowed a Canon 1400d with 55-250mm lens and shot some pics. Its very easy to shoot photographs using this and doesn't take as much time as the SonyDSCH300. I'm planning to upgrade and I don't intend to change cameras at least for next 3-4 years. So my question is 1. Which is easier to shoot birds - my two options are - P950 or D5600 with 70-300mm lens? 2. Is there any other camera you'd suggest in the budget range of P950 or D5600? Thanks in advance.

Stafford, I used to own a P900 but didn't like the EVF and found the motor drive settings of 2fps (too slow) and 10fps burst (good but followed by a apx. 5-second blackout/lockup) unsatisfactory. I've heard the P950 now has a much better EVF but I can't seem to find any information on motor drive settings on the 950. What can you tell me about the 'drive speeds on the 950. I eventually went back to my Canon SX60hs which offered a more useful 3fps setting (continuous focus) and a 10-fps setting (fixed focus) with a very deep buffer. However, I thought the lens for the P900 was very good. I've been very impressed with the results you've been able to get with your P-series Nikons.

Bruce thanks for the comments and questions. So I agee these bridge cameras all seem to have weak points in them. I notice it is really difficult for guys with DSLRs because of the performance that it lacks, so a different mindset is needed. The P950 EVF is much improved way better, I hated the P900 evf was horrible in my opinion. There are 3 shooting speeds on the P950 and P1000, slow, med, fast. Problem like you mentioned is the issues with the buffer. Man I really wish they would put in a larger buffer. If I shoot med or Fast it fills up very quickly. So I have to decide do I throttle the shot or push 7 fps and try to get 7, 14, 21 shots of the animal if it leaves. If I have more time than 3 to 5 seconds I will go for the slowest continous shooting speed as to extend out my shooting. Worse thing is all these nikons once you fill up the buffer they lock up the camera ahhhhh. I will look into the canon 60xhs, I know the Panasonic z80 had like 40 to 50 jpeg buffer I miss that. The P950 is improved some over the P900 but it is not earth moving diffference. The buffer is 2 to 3 times the size but that is not saying much. I frequently fill it up and wait. That is why I shoot slow mode of like 2 fps and hope for the best. Again, I am usually always at 2000 or 3000mm so it is the only thing that will work, my ILC system tops out at 1200 to 1800mm. Thanks again, jay

I would be curious about your thoughts on the Canon SX70hs. Its EVF is much improved over the my SX60. But the SX60 has provided surprisingly good results even into the digital range of appx. 2,300mm. The optical range is the 35mm equivalent of 21-1,365mm's if I recall the stats correctly. I think this is true of the SX70 as well. I look forward to your future videos.

Nice video. I just sent the link to a Nikon shooting friend who is just starting out, but much of it applies to my Sony RX10IV as well. I have one question. I probably spend most of my time in shutter priority mode. The reason is that I typically keep the ISO low and shoot the lowest shutter speed required for the job. At typical focal lengths of 500mm equivalent and above the lens is going to be wide open most of the time. I shoot a lot of hummingbirds which require relatively high speeds. I also have been trying to shoot lots of small birds in flight which require even higher shutter speeds since they are not hovering. Essentially with the RX10IV I am almost always at f4 as I am generally shooting late or early so light is usually an issue. With my M4/3 Panasonic I am usually wide open as well. Is there an advantage to shooting Aperture priority versus shutter priority if the aperture is going to mostly be wide open? Maybe it’s just what I am use to doing. I started out shooting aperture priority back when I started but for the last year or two I have rarely get out of shutter priority. I suppose my reasoning is that since the aperture is almost always wide open there’s really not much point in prioritizing it. There are some situations that I will use aperture priority but that is usually in very bright conditions where I might want to stop down some for DOF.
@MAKE_PHOTOGRAPHS_ANYWHERE
@MAKE_PHOTOGRAPHS_ANYWHERE 4 жыл бұрын
Rod once again thanks for stopping in and viewing. I had the RX10III for a bit, great camera and it really makes me consider if we really need other camera systems as it is that good. I really wish they could extend out the zoom to 900mm or 1000mm and that be a killer camera, one can wish. So to answer your question, about aperature vs shutter. I guess it depends on your camera. There are a few reasons. 1. So the Sony RX10III I noticed it was slighly sharper at F5.6 than at F4. Some lenses use to be sharper stopped down that is an old carry over from years ago. Now nost newer point and shoots they are nearly as sharp wide open so not as much reason to do that. 2. I would use Aperature Priority because sometimes I would have a bird so close I would stop down even more to get the birds body in full focus and sharp. So his tail feathers are also in focus. 3. For some reason when I shoot Nikon bridge cameras in shutter priority it was not using the widest opening or shooting wide open. So a few examples I was shooting some birds then I noticed why is this shooting at F8 i zoomed back out some. I then switch over to aperature priority and set the camera manually to 7.1. For some reason the camera did not auto adjust my aperature back down to wider opening. Not sure why, but from then on I always manually set it. Nothing wrong with using shutter priority I use it sometimes when needing to watch the movement of animals, Most my shots are of animals that are pretty still, The AF of bridge cameras are pretty bad so Static Shots for me work, Fast moving animals not so much. I hope an answered your question.
