This is the type of lens Nikon needed. Nikon needs to immediately add up more primes to this line and I WISH they would make the control ring be clickable and clickless. Would be really amazing for Zf-type bodies.

The new 35mm 1.4 certainly looks a cracker, as someone who's had a 35mm 1.4 G welded to one of his cameras for more of the last decade, I think the new lens looks just as good in almost all scenarios, whilst also being at a starting price less then 1/3rd of the older mount! Now my big decision is just do I keep waiting for that other mythical lens ;) I think the big decider here will be size and if the next 35mm is a beast of a lens, loads of people will be far more excited to have this one in the bag! Awesome stuff as usual mate!

Thank you for this useful comparison. I like the direction Nikon is taking with the new f/1.4 lens. Additional control ring and smoother bokeh transitions are appreciated as well as the weight, size and price. Also a reason why i still like to use F-Mount lenses like the AF-S 105 mm f/1.4E ED which is a legend. I don't have the AF-S 58 mm f/1.4 but many people like it for the special image rendering it can give.

As I saw on Nikonrumors website, Viltrox and Meike are planning to release their version of F1.4 primes for Nikon Z FF cameras this or next year, Sigma is also maybe on the way...and Nikon realised how big market is for cheaper F1.4 primes...so they made couple of compromises...added 1 instead of 2 AF motors, exclude pro coatings and ED elements, and with that, they made reasonably priced 35mm f1.4. Meike will probably be cheaper option but the worst option...I think that Viltrox will be at the same price and pretty comperable, and Sigma will be more expensive, but with better optics and build. I think next 2 years will be really great for Nikon Z users...lots of lenses are coming, I hope couple more of cameras(maybe Z5II and Z50II and maybe some more). :)

Thanks so much for this video-I’d been waiting for it. I’ve been really struggling while weighing whether to get the 1.8 vs the 1.4. I’ve used the DSLR 1.4 version (rental) and LOVED it, but couldn’t justify the cost. I tend toward the “too clinical” feeling about the 1.8, but the 1.4 reviews so far have pretty much dunked on the limitations of the 1.4. Complicating things: the current sale price on the 1.8 vs the cost of the 1.4. Overthink much? Why, yes! At least now, I have what I think is a much more balanced look at the lens. I see many folks feel the 35mm is boring--that’s how I feel about the 50mm focal length. Proof that one person’s Goldilocks lens is another person’s brick. So appreciate your clarity in explaining things.

I didn't understand exactly why I felt that way until I bought myself a Nikon F mount 58mm f1.4G lens. Although it is not very sharp, it has a character that I love. Thanks for bringing some sanity to the introduction of this lens! I can't believe how many outlets I saw saying "why did Nikon downgrade their 35mm S-line (presumably 1.2) lens? F1.4 used to be label for pro grade lenses with excellent sharpness, build quality and all the latest tech, right up until the previous generation of Nikon F lenses launched in the 2010s. Some even less than a decade ago (28 1.4 & 105 1.4) .Why Nikon decided to break lens line up tradition and when other brands give out excellent F1.4s, we get F1.8's and budget F1.4's. I also don't understand why people are happy with this. What is wrong with affordable F1.8's and excellent F1.4's? Who ever complaint that this should be turnt upside down? Imagine Nikon launched a high end $2500 70-200 F4 with VR and a cheaper plastic feeling 70-200 f2.8 without VR and with softer corners. I guess everyone would just swallow it and call Nikon genius all over again.

@@caleidoo I dunno, I kinda see it as further stratification. You still have the 1.2 S models that meet all the qualities you mention: excellent, pro-grade, super sharp, extra fast. You also have an excellent 1.8 S models that are Pro/Prosumer level, super duper sharp, but not quite as fast if you want to save some money. Then a line of 1.4 models can be a hobbyist level for people who want something super fast, but don't need a clinical level of sharpness, instead preferring some "character" (or videographers).

Ricci, I'm not sure how much of Nikon's ear you have access to, but it would be next level to have some lenses with a dedicated aperture ring. Like those on the Fuji G-mount system or like the Sony 24/40/50 Prime G Lenses or even the G-Master offerings that have the "Automatic" and the graduated F-stops. Even some zooms like the 24-70 M2. Affordable would also be key, even if they split out some S-line (more GM like) lenses. I feel there is a huge demand for lenses with such "versatile" aperture rings. While the programmable rings are great, having a dedicated/graduated ring with detents would be better for some primes/zooms. What I'd really love is to rock a more compact prime or even zoom with aperture ring even if the optical quality is more F-mount than Z-mount to keep cost low. I miss the feeling of a D750 and a small prime for travel/street photography. While the 35/50 1.8's are exceptional they're just massive compared to my old F-mount lenses.

My two questions: is it better & sharper wide open than the Sigma ART 35 1.4 with FTZ adapter - my only remaining F mount lens, next to the Nikon 105/1.4 which will probably remain cemented onto a FTZ forever. And secondly: will there be a difference in AF speed/stickiness in difficult light because of only one AF motor? I use my Sigma 35/1.4 for shots on the dance floor at weddings or events. Lots of movement, both from people & faces and spot lights and LEDs. I'm tempted to try it out, but if it's the same as the Sigma (optical/AF), but just without FTZ, I don't see the point and will just use the Sigma until it dies or gets stolen.

I own the sigma 35 1.4, but its kind of bulky and heavier with tje ftz. That being said, i got the 35 1.8, which is lighter and smaller, but its less sharp in the center, its an improvement on far corners sharpness and CA on extreme situations, but overall i dint like the bokeh, flare and color. I only kept it because it does helps my wrist on long days and for portability. I would like to see the flare and portraits with the new 35 1.4 nikkor to see if its better match for my taste, if not i guess i will be getting a tech adapter and sigma 35 dn. I dont mind only about sharpness but the overall character and looks too, i own the 58mm 1.4 whicj its very unpredictable in sharpness and lots of CA, but when the lens shines, it shines in a very unique way

@@ernestolopez3754 I always liked the rendering of the early ART series. Same with the 50mm F1.4 ART, but sold that one because I wanted to stop fiddling with the FTZ adapter and but not go to F1.8 - which is a visible difference. Hesitated long, but took the plunge with the Nikkor 50/1.2 S and it's an amazing lens. Boringly perfect, but great. Except the size of course. I was hoping Nikon (or Sigma/Tamron) would come with an excellent 35/1.4 for Z - would happily pay €1200 -1400 for it. But instead they gave is this 35/1.4 with cut corners and positioned lower than the F1.8 version. I'm disappointed, not going to lie. Especially because I see no logic in this backwards lens line up, no matter how many times fan boys are screaming it's a genius move. But I'll wait for my final verdict after using it through rental or just buying (read: trying) it on Amazon.

I see a difference in AF speed tbh. I also looked up, that it has one motor instead of two motors in the 1.8. Anyway: the most important question is, if it is better or similar to the F-mount 35/1.4 with the same rendering. This looks like it…a comparison would be great!

In real life it does shows a significant difference, I have noticed that my 50mm 1.8s and 24-120mm f4s are way better then the competitors.

I think this lens could be great for Nikon, even better than the z6iii. Nikonrumors is saying their is a 50mm coming, so I hope a lineup of these would serve Nikon Z very well. Nikon chose to embrace competition, contrary to Canon and this lens will be very competitive against the Chinese brands. Since the advent of the Z mount, prices of lens have gone up quite a bit, this and hopefully at least a 50 and 85, would make many who are not pixel peepers either move from F to Z partially or fully and even get new or people switching.

I think you are right. What I've seen is that the Nikon community is really hard to crack when it comes to switching from their beloved DSLR to Mirrorless. There are still people who think the D850 or D810 is better which is strange because mirrorless gives so many advantages not only with AF.

@@jorgepinogarciadelasbayonas As a grey hair man, I can say that their are a lot of stubborn gray hair man in the Nikon community. Once they have set that an OVF is better than an EVF, they will stick with it an will carry it in their grave. I happy Nikon has moved on and focus on video, because they listened for years too much about those people that make as if they are forced to press on that red button. I mean no one forces you to do that, I myself don't use half the functionality of my bodies, but I don't complain night and day about it. @@danielvilliers612 Yes, this is my impression as well and it explains why the same type of customers were always asking for AF-D lenses support with it's old screwdrive AF system. Too much backward thinking is bad for a brand and those customers don't invest any new money even if their lenses are really old tech. Also what i find amusing is that there are always some customers who hate video features in a mirrorless camera and don't want any video features in it. Didn't they realize that a mirrorless camera is a video stream from the image sensor?

And not just Nikon, but all other brands. Why not offer, say, a cheap & small F2.8, good F1.8 at €400, and excellent F1.4 at €1200 ish and a stellar F1.2 at €2000-2500. Why would a pro photographer want a sharp 50mm or 35mm.... but not a F1.4 much rather have a F1.8? I have yet see the reason why Nikon decided to drop that line up logic and confuse people and potential customers. I can't see how this decision has helped Nikon attract more buyers.

@@caleidoo I don't know how people can criticize Nikon for giving choices. Ricci gave a very good explanation of the difference in those two lenses. They also don't live in a bubble, they see the competition of cheap chinese lens with better and better quality at more affordable prices. This one is starting at 600 USD, and in one year will have long promos for 500-550 USD, that will be real competitive against those. Since the launch of the Z cameras, price have gone up dramatically, yes quality also, but not everyone has the means to pay themselves a f 1.8 primes in the range of 800usd to 2400 USD. Before during the Fmount years, it was like 500 to 1500 USD. Not everyone wants tack sharp, you could get a set of 35, 50, 85 for the same price of one 1.2S lens and also the same weight.

@@danielvilliers612 You missed my point. I don't criticize Nikon for giving choices. It criticize what the available choices are. I never met someone who in the past decades said that he or she would rather see a line up of expensive F1.8 lenses and cheaper F1.4 lenses with cut backs to bring the price down. During F mount, you could go all the way back to AF-D lenses if budget was low. Even for F1.4. I don't see how the argument "everything got more expensive" can be a valid explanation for Nikon turning F1.4 lenses - the workhorses of most pros - into starter or entry level lenses BELOW a F1.8 line. And yes sharpness is not everything, but this lens also lacks coating to combat flare, controls on the lens and has half of the AF power.
