I ran into the same problem with my FTZ adapter and my tripod. I got myself a Smallrig L-bracket. When you use that to mount you camera you can easily switch between Z-lenses and the FTZ

Always enjoy your videos. Great that you tell it as it is without all that over enthusiastic preamble some KZfaqrs seem to find essential!! I have both a D850 and a Z6. I would really like to see you do some of your lens comparisons showing how they each perform in their "native" environment - i.e. in this case - your F mount 85mm on a DSLR, such as a D850, and the Z-mount version on a Z6/7 and see if they effect you highlighted is still prevalent. Keep up the great work.

Great video, it’s good to see someone else just ‘having one of those days!’. If you use Arca Swiss plates you can use the small rig L bracket / plate for the Z6/7. This has a deep base which allows you to mount the FTZ adaptor whilst on a tripod, it also provides a deeper grip so you little finger doesn’t slide off the bottom of the body - take a look!

Hi Matt, I think you really have to change your ballhead and plates. And I believe you are a very patient Man. I used to use manfrotto head and plates back in 1997 until 2004. Since then I use Arca style plate. Nowadays many copy versions of Arca style plates. To be honest if you had used arca style plates, you would not get that frustation. I do own Z6 and just acquired D850 (Yes, I am very late to the D850 party). I just used my 85mm f1.4 again after years sitting in my dry cabinet, and I love it again, but plan to get either 50mm S or 85mm S. Your video really helps. You confirm that 85mm S is really Rock. Thanks!!

Matt do compare with the Samyang Z mount 85 1.4 and the Sigma 1.4 on the ftz if you can. Especially on the sunset CA cause that was a nice revelation. You saved my money on the Nikon F 1.4, I currently have the F 1.8 and wondering if I should upgrade to the z 1.8 or the sigma 1.4 (which I can also use on the D750) Cheers!

I thought this was a very enjoyable and entertaining video. However, here is my only issue with it. I don't know a single person that uses an 85mm lens for landscapes. Whenever I'm doing portrait work, I have my 85mm F1.4G lens on about 98% of the time (and I have the older 70-200 F2.8 but I much prefer the look of the 85mm). I think a more interesting and valid comparison would be actually shooting with the lenses in a scenario in which you would probably be using them. Not to mention, no one gives a rat's azz about corner to corner sharpness in portrait work. Now...chromatic aberration is sometimes an issue (especially if they are wearing glasses or silver) but easily resolved in Lightroom. Thanks for sharing Matt!

Hey Matt! You might want to check out the Sirui TY-C10 (also named AM-10C) Arca-Swiss tripod plate. They are very small, so one can always stay at the FTZ, one always at the camera. They don't interfere, even when changing between Z- and F-lenses!

Matt, again, another video that makes me extremely happy I went with the Z6 & Z7 Cameras. rumors has some more lens releases with the z5. it is said to have the 50 mm 1.2 being released but by time the 70 - 200 mm 2.8 is released i will be paying off that lens making me wait for the 50. anyways. Keep up the great videos man... be safe. ps. you have some serious patience.

Yeah lets hope the rumours on the lenses are true, exciting if so. I think the 70-200 fell into last minute production ramping as COVID hit ... and it is just so unfortunate. Thanks for this Matt, i have a question and maybe i could be way off base. What makes you sure that it was fringing going on and not it actually picking up the refraction across the wave tops. IE a rainbowing effect from the mist coming off the water and catching the sunlight. The reason i ask is i wonder if its actually opposite, that the expensive lens is giving a false representation because the coating on the lens actually reduces that like a polarizer. I ask this because normally fringing is uniform in color but since we see yellow to green and then purple that it may not be fringing.
@MattIrwinPhotography
@MattIrwinPhotography 4 жыл бұрын
I would say having watched the F 85 for around 10 years now, I don't think it is that ... also it is very cold here and there was almost no wind, so I don't think it is mist coming of the water .. but I don't know for certain ... but I can see the Z doing a better job regardless of the reason .... :)
@the_photarist1845
@the_photarist1845 4 жыл бұрын
I would say a "Different" job as opposed to a better one. I do have most of my kit dedicated to vintage lenses and i really do like that vintage look, the colors, the hazing etc. The Z lens imo is a little too modern in its rendition than i like. If however i was doing studio work where clarity and accuracy is really important i would use the Z lens.

I'll never forget when I dropped my Voigtlander 28 f/2.8 pancake last year. The whole D810 fell down right on the lens, and because it's all metal, it survived the impact, but there's a big scratch on the edge of the filter thread. It bothers me until today... I'm so much more careful with the gear from then on.

That issue with the FTZ drives me up the wall as well! Also it doesn't help that I have a peak design anchor mount that needs a hex screw... To mount a Z lens I need to remove the tripod mount, remove the FTZ, remove the anchor using the hex screwdriver, add the mount to the z50 and then mount it on the tripod 😑 Also yes, please do show how you removed something of that size!

I think the faster the glass the more compromises you need to make. Often the 1.8 lens is far better optically than the 1.4 or 1.2. I’ve seen several tests of both Nikon and Canon primes and apart from the cost, size and weight, there’s chromatic aberration and softness even stopped down to f1.8. The f mount 85mm f1.8 might have performed better. I have little experience with the expensive lenses but it seems to be a recurring theme in tests 🤷🏻‍♂️
@photo-markus
@photo-markus 4 жыл бұрын
All Z lenses are superior to f glass, but I still prefer for portraiture my 85 1.4 F mount lens. I use less the 85 for landscape, having this focal covered by more lenses like 70-200 VR2, 80-400...

They have electronics in the tripod foot of the FTZ adapter, because they need a motor inside the adapter to drive G-Lenses. Canon on the other hand has these motors inside their lenses, so their adapters are small. I don't think Nikon will be able to fix this issue.
