Nikon Z30 vs Z50 - Which Camera Comes Out On Top?

Nikon released two APS-C mirrorless cameras during the last two years. First, Nikon released the Nikon Z 50 in 2020. A compact powerhouse featuring 4k video, 11fps and a flip-down selfie LCD screen, aiming this camera at the vlogging community. Next, Nikon released the Z 30 during the summer of 2022. The Z 30 features the exact same image/video quality, but they revamped the LCD screen with their vari-angle display, chopped off the EVF, and replaced the outdated MicroUSB port with a USB-C port that would allow users to power their Z 30 indefinitely or charge with a power bank while using the camera.
The Nikon Z 50 received tough criticism about the placement of the flip-down LCD screen, which would be blocked by a tripod unless used with a SmallRig mounting bracket which would relocate the tripod mount to under the battery cover. The Nikon Z 30 seems to be the perfect companion for videographers and streamers, but some are hesitant about the lack of the EVF.
I got to spend a week with both cameras, using them during photoshoots, weddings, and for my regular livestreams on Twitch.
In this video, I give you my thoughts about both cameras and reveal which camera I felt worked best for me. (Spoiler: It was the Z 50)

Really good comparison. For 99% of the reason you prefer the Z50, I got the Z FC. I do prefer the swing out screen as it is (yes) the first live view camera I have ever owned (old DSLR guy here). I like the flip out screen for vertical shooting street stuff. I actually chose the Z FC over the Z 50 for the look. Makes one stand out a whole lot less on the street when you have a "retro" looking camera. The Z FC does need a grip, so I use the Small Rig grip. Makes it feel just like my old OM-1 film camera (with the power winder attached). I got the Z30 for my wife as it was less "intimidating". Great stuff ... keep it up ... Subscribed!.

Thank you so much for the feedback! I looked up the Small Rig grip for the Zfc! That looks soooo much better than how it normally is. That was my main gripe with it, the Zfc is most defiant the most uncomfortable to hold out of the 3…but it was a fantastic camera to use. That’s awesome you got your wife the z30! I agree that I would rather have the EVF because of going outside it is easier viewing than the lcd screen. Z50 only needs the usb-c port. I have dummy batteries for my Z50, two Z fc's and the Z30.

@@TLDAcademy When I buy something I use it until it stops working . I do give them away when I do not use them. I have not sold any because I use them in different studios. 4 APSC 2 are Nikon, Sony A6100 for the Product Review Overhead Shot and one Canon R7 cameras using the M1 Max Studio Basic. 3 Full Frame Nikon cameras on the other 64gb M1 Max Studio. My 2018 Intel Mac Mini w/64gb of memory has two APSC Nikon cameras. My 2017 iMac w/64gb of memory has a Sony A7C Full Frame and Canon R10 APSC cameras. In other words "I am a Hoarder!".

What are your thoughts between z5 and z50 for weddings, sports and wildlife? With quality and frames per second for sports and wild life Do you find z5 low frames make u miss shots?

Hey 007, thanks for the question! I'll try to make my answer brief: Weddings - I'd take the Z5 over the Z50 every single time. The Z50's performance would just drop off instantly once it got dark, especially during the reception time. Sports/Wildlife - I do understand why the Z50 would be tempting with the higher fps. I think in daylight, the Z50 would be fun to shoot with, especially if you've got some great glass on it...but the Z5 could certainly hold it's own. As far as missing shots, I haven't missed any shots with my Z5 during weddings because it has a slower fps. I have a Z6II now, and I still don't fully utilize it's 14fps. If I had the choice between the Z5 and Z50, I would go Z5. BUT...I still really want a Z50 for traveling/vlogging content. I hope that helps! Haha

@@TLDAcademy thanks for the reply, really appreciate the effort in the message I like the z5 alone, but was wondering if the big frames per second would make a difference. Let's wait and see if a z5 ii will come out in 2023 ^^)

I lot of my video and photography is now vertical. The flip screen actually works better for this. Do you find there is a difference in the AF between the two cameras, I hear people say they feel the Z30 is a bit more reliable, it doesn't get stuck on the background.

You’re right. The Z 30’s screen absolutely makes it easier for those recording vertical content, especially if you doing selfie content stuff. I didn’t notice a difference on the AF. When I was testing them both on stream, you can notice a difference between the Z 5 and the Z 30/ Z 50. Both APS-C cameras were much snappier and quicker than the Z 5.
