*I forgot to mention when sawing the grooves for the thread, that I saw at a slightly diagonal angle. As the saw cuts through, I tilt it a little either left or right so that the groove isn't just straight down. I apologize for not mentioning that as its not easy to see.

To use this method for single pages, a good deal of technique is necessary. As you point out, the adhesion between PVA and paper can set up quickly. To help with that, a glue with a longer open time and less filler is needed. Paper that is less "thirsty" and with good grain behavior is good too. Then, with the front edge securely clamped, the spine is bent sharply enough that the overall area is increased by perhaps 50%. With a large enough brush to apply a generous but not drippy coat, the spine is held firmly during gluing. Then the direction of "fanning" is quickly reversed and the brush is reapplied, with added glue if needed. Straightening the book block out, excess glue is removed with a pinching gliding motion between thumb and forefinger. Reinforcing cloth or non-woven material is then applied, and may be held compressed between waxed or waste paper. The result is a book with each leaf tipped onto its neighbor -- a highly openable volume, and much stronger than mere padding. If the book or paper stock are heavy, added reinforcement along the spine will reduce the "flexing angle" between leaves, so that a potential breaking point is avoided but openability remains good.

Totally , I honestly prefer either hand-sewing the pages to the cover or just the pages and then gluing the and pages to the cover, I tried the gluing method and I f't it up😂

Thank you! I can get on my project! My kids draw and paint a lot. I want to take those pages and bind them into books, add a few white ones for photos. I will make 3 of these and they will be Christmas gifts for the grandparents.

My first venture into making a sketch book for a bible study class. I love your clear instructions without having to be "perfectly aligned" 😊 Will be starting the folding process once I purchase the size paper required. Not a librarian yet did work part-time in a library for a few years processing books for shelving. Watched the book repair person doing the glueing work and the sewing part was daunting! Thanks for this alternative!

I have tried a variation of this kind of binding. Instead of PVA glue, I used rubber cement. The book has been used a lot and it still hangs together.

I dislike sewing signatures so much. It keeps me away from making books. This is the perfect substitute for stitching up a book block. I will probably add more strands across my spine than you did, but that shouldn't hurt the binding. Thank you so much for this technique.

I believe it is called a coping saw. It is for fine detail work with wood mainly. Hope this helps some.

I have always done this unaware that it is an actual technique used by book binders. Where the fabric is used, I used two layers of cheese cloth instead.

you've inspired me to try this! I love it and your instructions are so well done. Is there a special kind of glue that you use? I use TomBow white glue for my card making projects, would that work?

I don't know much about tombow white glue but I can suggest using pva glue I think its the most used type for book binding. The brand books by hand have one intended for book binding but the classic Elmer's school glue would work just as great, even better given how cheap and accessible it is. Of course there's epoxy glue like gorilla but in the end its up to you and with what's available near you.

Would the threads be more stable ifthey didnt go straight across, but in an X or zig zag pattern? Then there would be less of a tendenbcy to pull straight through.

hi Scott! Good question! In this instance, I'm not sure it would make much difference since the ends of the threads are glued in place underneath the endpages. The threads are sort of like rebar in concrete. Its the glue that does the lion's share of the bonding. Hope that helped, at least to explain my thought process. Thanks for asking!

Have you ever made a book using multiple text blocks? Like, if you were combining multiple books into one compendium and binding them together? Is that a bad move? I'm attempting that but I'm not sure how to proceed, but I'm considering binding it a scrapbook, multiple hinge style so its able to lay flat still? I'm new and know nothing >.

Couldn't you do the fan method where you put the book in a press, fan the edges and then add glue? The glue would get down between the pages better instead of laying on top.

Hello Elke, I used some paper from a sketch pad (50 lb.) that I had handy, but copy paper should work, too.

Question: is a single strand of embroidery floss the optimal thickness? I am guessing in this case that thicker isn’t better. Just curious about the thickness you could use and have it still work. (ie like #10 crochet cotton)

I'm not sure how thick #10 crochet cotton is?? But, I would use some thread with a little bulk to it and not something too slick. If #10 crochet cotton is like baby yarn, it should be okay? I don't like to make the cuts too large, so you could always separate the yarn into threads. The "fuzziness" of the yarn might be a good thing.

If you want it to last past a year or more it wouldn't work because regular glue becomes brittle & flakes as it ages. Glue specifically for bookbinding works the best

The automatic captions option are always left on, but sometimes it takes a bit for them to show up. Makes me wonder If it might have something to do with how much content is being uploaded to KZfaq at the time.

@@NiktheBooksmith it always says ‘captions are unavailable’ now (it’s a fairly recent thing) and they never turn up, no matter how long your video. I still get them on my other subscribed channels right from the start - I’ve tried looking at my settings and I can’t see anything wrong with them. If anyone discovers how to put them back on I’d be grateful to know how as I’m hearing impaired and even with hearing aids, if I can’t see your mouth I don’t hear so well😁

@@lindafriend9392 I've checked and double-checked and I cannot see why they wouldn't show up all of a sudden. I've always had captions enabled and now I don't see them either. I'll have to contact KZfaq (yeah, I know...good luck with that, right?) and see if there is a bug causing problems.
