Uncut circle is an important spec... as a retired engineer, we measured it just like you did: slow speed, 2wd, reasonably smooth concrete. Can be done solo with the chalk taped to a stick. Great job!

Same with John deere 590 series big garden mowers. They have a very tight compact turning radius. I use to own one. Sold it because I gor tired of having to pull up on the blade engagement know when trying to back up while cutting grass. Which is a very annoying safety feature for a person who is careful and has been using riding mowers for 4 decades of my life since I was 9 to 10 years old!

Uncut circle is for sure a good measurement for mowing because that's when it matters most... I guess a way deere could make theirs better by having a sharper turning radius but also how much the deck sticks out past the rear wheel.

Just one other point to make. The JD and Kubota were tested on a grass surface and the NH on concrete. I would assume the friction would be greater on concrete. Which would help it turn tigher. Great video. I just ordered the wheel kit for my broom attachments for the combi stihl. Thanks for the info on that little gem.
@TractorTimewithTim

We saw no evidence of slippage on the concrete. ..and no evidence of slippage on the grass. You are correct in that different surfaces could have an impact, but I suspect it would be negligible in this case. We DID see lots of slippage in 4wd on the concrete ... so much so that we abandoned the test.

It’s an interesting data set to see how much the brands can differ, but there are many more factors that I’d look at before turning “diameter”. Lift capacity, lift height, simultaneous actions on the loader valves, max travel speed, can the backhoe swing a full 180 degrees? Etc...

You need to be using the same size mower deck for any of this to mean anything when you measure the way you do. What you should measure is the turning radius or dia. of each tractor you compare. From this you can calculate the uncut dia for any size mower. This then can help one pick the size of mower that they should buy.

Do you remember the sizes of the mower decks? I believe there are a couple options for the 1025R, W25S I believe is 60 inches? Perhaps if one has a larger deck, it would get a smaller mowing diameter given a similar turning radius for the tractor itself.

I am a big kubota fan and that is mostly all we have at work BUT I would say john deere has this sub compact division figured out the best. Turning radius, attachment hook up and controls are just a few of the things that put them on top. When buying lawn tractors or garden tractors you'll see uncut turning radius in the specs. Of course it makes a great deal of difference what size of deck you choose, if you have a choice of 54" or 72" it's significant. On another point, I'm blue you don't call it Holley.

New Holland at one time offered a "Super Steer" option on their smaller tractors where the axle was allowed to pivot in middle increasing the radius of the turn. Does the Deere have a similar design allowing that impressive performance? Does the front wheels of the 1025R tend to chew up yard on the turn given the tight radius? Informative test for a someone that uses the machine often as a mower.

Super Steer is an amazing thing to experience first hand! I haven't seen anything around like it either so we picked up an older New Holland TC33D with Super Steer. It certainly turns super short for its size but does have some weird caveats with loader type attatchment due to the steering geometry. That takes some learning lol. I'd bet that's why it wasn't fully adopted. It is lovely as a mower though if you come from zero turn type lawn equipment. I wonder if someone would attempt a Super Steer style turning again. I know John Deer has 4 wheel steering in their lawn tractor line.

I enjoy your channel and all it;s content. I am a retired farmer and enjoy video's with equipment. I recently watched a video were they were buying a compact tractor and had narrowed it down to New Holland, Kubota and Joh Deere. He eventually chose New Holland. Some of the reasons for his choice were that New Holland had more hydraulic capacity and that only the New Holland had a cast iron rear end vs aluminum. This was on hydrostatic models with 25 hp. He did say the John Deere D series was cast iron because it was gear drive. I was kind of disappointed to learn most hydro's had aluminum rear ends. At the time of this video you had all 3 models, would you be able to check there rear ends to verify which were cast iron and aluminum.

@@TractorTimewithTim Wow. Bad day Tim? I never said you were stupid or that you were trying to pass anything off. I just said I didn’t know what size the decks were.

No worries. Not a bad day. We take our testing seriously, It is hard to mention every single possible thing during these tests. At some point folks have to trust that we are thinking it through. Based on the repeated asking of this question in the comments section, it is clear that folks are not willing to do so. They either assume we are idiots, or out to ‘cheat’ the test results. Neither are true. Had we used different sized decks, it would have been worthy of mention, and we would certainly have discussed that, and modified our calculations to fit. Anyway, no offense. Thanks for continuing to watch us.

@@TractorTimewithTim I suspect it is because you typically DO make an effort to talk about all the important aspects that affect these types of comparisons. So if you omit something potentially important, despite it being obvious to you, it will almost certainly cause some to wonder about it, and some of them to do that wondering in the comments. In any case, I appreciate your time.

Is there a big difference in the wheel base of the 3 tractors?
@TractorTimewithTim
@TractorTimewithTim 3 жыл бұрын
Deere is longest wheelbase! Should be worst turning radius.

On a large open lawn this would make a big difference if you can do fewer rounds with the Deere before going back and forth. Do you know if the Deere could do rows and turnaround on the ends with only two 60" opening rounds of the lawn? (not sure my question makes sense) I'm sure the Kubota and New Holland would need 3 opening rounds at least.

Yes, can be done...but need to back up at each end to turn.

Maybe you cover this in the comments, but I never see where you state the mower deck size. Seems that would be a critical variable. Are these all with 60" decks?

The sharper the the wheel turns the more stress and wear gets put on the bearing and front axle. Just curious if the 1025 have front axle problems. I’m totally out of the loop and ignorant about Deere tractors.

No unusual front axle issues. Sometimes front axle seals go out due to loader abuse.(too much weight bouncing too fast)
