My brother sent me this song shortly before his death a few months ago. I listen to it now and it helps me understand what he was going through. It's the most painful thing I've ever experienced. I only had him in my life, and he was too far gone for me to save him. He had already given up. I guess the only thing I can do now is pretend like this was a message he was trying to convey to me, and try to keep my life from going the same way. But, was it? I think it was just him feeling, living, the words in this song, wishing someone could help. And I failed. I will probably end up the same way. I've lived a decent life. When it's time, it's time. Hopefully I find some purpose before it's all over. I just wish he was here so we could figure all this out together. He was so smart.

My girl's favorite is Maynard, mine has always been Trent. We both love both, but online she goes by ManyrdMinion, and Trent always was all always will be my #1, the music resonates with every part of me, the lyrics are literally woven into the tapestry of my life and are a part of who I am...a hauntingly beautiful, broken, dark god with a taste of the void touching his soul...just like Reznor himself
@ellisberg
@ellisberg 6 жыл бұрын
Reznor is so weirdly honest about shit. I seriously respect him for that. Not many artists will put themselves out there like Trent does when he writes about his own life and thoughts. Nothing speaks to us like truth and honesty, so naturally most of us can relate to what Trent puts out there. What a picture he paints of what our numbed lives are becoming in our tech-controlled world. "There is no love here and there is no pain" Trent... you are a fucking genius of epic proportions, dude.

For some reason that line hit me so hard. - I believe I can see the future, because I repeat the same routine - How does one escape that routine? I am being jobless, because no matter what job I start, I get bored of it. Besides my daydream of becoming an Archaeologist (which will never happen) I just don't see myself evolving. I simply don't want to work anywhere for longer than a month if even. I get tired of the people, the work and waking up starts with my body and mind fighting with every cell and thought against getting up. Every day is exactly the same.

I've never done any drugs and barely drink. Never even smoked a cig or a joint. But believe it or not, I'm envious of addicts who recover and can see life in a new way and feel motivated again. I'm completely sober and songs like this and Hurt and many others speak to my own pain, isolation and failure...but sadly I can't even point to addiction as the reason. And I can't find new life in recovery. It just all stays the same.

I've been listening to this song for years now. Every now and then when life starts to suck I listen to it along with my list of other depression songs. I don't think I'm suicidal but this song always make me feel like there's nothing wrong with wanting to get to the end of this so called life. We're all just going through the repetitive motions of life. Some of us keep it together to make it through all of the BS and some of decide to find the end quicker... either way the happy joyful moments seem to get fewer and further apart the older I get and way too much of it is the crap that just makes me feel more numb.

I remember listening to this over and over, describing my life perfectly. I went from a lucrative career as a programmer, mom and wife to what felt like nothing. Took another 6 years and 8 surgeries to figure out what the fuck was wrong with me. I’m better now, with meds, but I’m still disabled. The pandemic feels like this too.

Whether intentional or not, the combination of this song's lyrics alongside its music together creates one of the most sickeningly accurate portraits of addiction I've ever heard...the sweeping music covers the 'high-drama' aspect--where life-or-death scenarios seem to be occurring constantly, simply as a matter of course, like there is a monster in your head that is not you but is somehow wearing your skin, in control of your muscles, your words...even your heart. And then the lyrics hit from the opposite angle: the mundane, grinding, repetitive day-in-day-out that is the actual reality of it; a place where "there is no pain"...but "there is no love", either...A purgatory. A 9 to 5 where you punch in to feel sick, and don't clock out until that feeling is alleviated...and then start it over again the next day. The one moment where the narration breaks away, and the 'real' person manages to get a few words in ["I'm writing on a little piece of paper..."] just serves to dovetail the two halves together. So fucking underrated

Over the years with a remarkable regularity Trent has left me so impressed with his ability to communicate and render an emotional experience and always with such a respectable authenticity that is all too rare. Some of the time I'm moved to such an extreme that I am at the end of the song in awe. And then there are the times when I can relate so much to the work that I can't help but think in another universe I just might write the exact same song and I am surprised at how we think and feel so similarly about something. For all the respect he has earned for being an artists artist and musicians musician it measures small next to the legendary status of his future legacy. If he stopped creating right now that would not change. Thank you, Trent for doing what you do and for doing it with constant artistic integrity. Respect from a kindred spirit. (for a complete lack of a better term)
