For those not subscribed to my channel, I upload very few videos that aren't related to Bob Dylan. But I managed to get my hands on this footage and couldn't help sharing it with the world. This is one of the best live performances I've seen by any artist. It was filmed sometime between 1968 and 1969 at the Village Gate nightclub in New York City.
I hadn't listened to much of Nina Simone until I watched the Netflix documentary "What Happened, Miss Simone?" This performance kicked open the door to my soul. The film had only short clips of it though, so I scoured the internet for the full version. To my disappointment, all the available videos seemed to be VHS bootlegs (terrible visual and audio quality). I finally found this beautifully clear version after many months of searching.
I could not upload the entire performance due to copyright issues, but the most moving part of the song is completely intact; at 1:20, Simone has her band and the entire audience singing "'Cause I know" (in reference to the lyric "Then I'd sing, 'cause I know / How it feels to be free") while she improvises incredible lines ("I wouldn't know myself / I'd have new hands / I'd have new visions / My eyes would be open"). And her eyes tell you she means every word of it (especially at 3:00). Watch this from the beginning without any distractions. If you really tune into this performance, it might kick open the door to your soul too.
Although this performance is just as much visual one as it is a musical one, I highly recommend you listen to the full version here: • I Wish I Knew How It W... .
LYRICS:
I wish I knew how
It would feel to be free
I wish I could break
All the chains holding me
I wish I could say
All the things that I should say
Say 'em loud, say 'em clear
For the whole round world to hear
I wish I could share
All the love that's in my heart
Remove all the bars
That keep us apart
I wish you could know
What it means to be me
Then you'd see and agree
That every man should be free
I wish I could give
All I'm longin' to give
I wish I could live
Like I'm longin' to live
I wish I could do
All the things that I can do
And though I'm way overdue
I'd be starting anew
Well I wish I could be
Like a bird in the sky
How sweet it would be
If I found I could fly
Oh I'd soar to the sun
And look down at the sea
Then I'd sing 'cause I know
How it feels to be free
Love & Peace,
~SP

It's a form of call and response..embedded in African culture. So if you're black it's like listening to a song straight from your ancestors.

@@Blissedx Exactly! I also think of it as the group creating a musical base for her to stand on as she works out her feelings and interpretations on the stage. It's an audio version of "We got you."

The spirit of activism rendered via music resided in Nina Simone. Truly she was the high priestess of music. Even though she distanced herself from being tied down by labels She appreciated every genre And appreciated the different aspects that fed into her music

The lady says there's been a couple of times on stage that she's been really free....and boom , you see her rise from her stool and you can physically see her spirit raise up as she moves and dances, and I think the audience singing " cause I know " gives her impetus and makes the whole thing semi religious. damn I wish I could have been in that room. Absolutely astounding .

Agreed! The recording studio versions don't hold a candle to these live performances... Because they don't capture the absolute essence, the pure emotions or the crowds involvement in the song that Nina performed in. This video captures all of that and allows us to be touched by a time that existed long before us (or remind us of that time). Istg, I had a lump in my throat watching her perform this song (it's about the 6/7th time I've watched it) and it'll never get old. You can just feel the hidden anger, the deep sadness and the desperation to be free once more just from this vid alone ❤️❤️❤️❤️

When Dylan was honored by MusiCares gave an speech about his career and talked about the influence of artists like Nina Simone . And Nina admired Dylan's songs . The High Priestess of Soul covered several times his songs . In 1968 included three songs 'To Love Somebody ' album : Just Like Tom Thumb's Blues , I Shall Be Released and The Times They Are A-Changin' . Previously she covered Ballad of Hollis Brown and in 1971 her famous cover of Just Like A Woman , where Nina changed the lyrics (I'm not a little girl) . Dylan was at least two times with the Nina , one late 60's and in the 80's . '' I want to be remembered as a diva who never compromised in what she felt about racism and how the world should be , and consistently stayed the same '' Nina Simone .

@Ernie Chip Douglas You got it , man . It was a little joke ; her real name was Eunice , Nina is a nickname from Spanish " niña" that means "little girl" (i think when she was young , one of her latin friends called her "Niña" ) . Despite of this in Spain usually many flamenco artist and bullfighters have a nickname with "The" , and talking "street Spanish" it's usual to say La Juani , El Pedro or La Nina . 🇪🇸🎶✅

This is the best live performance of the ones I have heard lately. It is perhaps the wondrous, bluesy choir in the back. I do think this was how the studio recording ought to have been.

The amazing thing (from what I understand about this performance - I maybe be wrong) is that the choir is actually the audience. They joined in and helped Nina reach that point of transcendence. It’s beautiful! ❤️

Yesss, that performance is my favorite of hers. She had taken a long hiatus before then to sort things out for herself... She came back and was a little rusty, sure. But she always valued authenticity, and being true to herself. If you can't enjoy her rusty, you don't deserve her at her most polished. She always desired to be a concert pianist instead of what she ended up doing... The end of "Feelings" in that Montreux performance is so epic. She is an amazing pianist ❤❤❤❤
