Elvis is so underrated as an arranger! He arranged his recordings and the music in live performances! ☮️🖖🏽
@stephenmorse8811
@stephenmorse8811 9 ай бұрын
The majority of his on-stage performances (not the rock songs) were arranged by his pianist, Glen Hardin.
@AJ-jc1ye
@AJ-jc1ye 6 ай бұрын
If you watch him in rehearsals he is the one commanding everyone! they take their cue from him. The people that worked with him said he produced and arranged but wasn’t credited. He did everything in his head the sound that he wanted. You will hear him in the studio on his many takes trying different arrangements.
@icanfartloud
@icanfartloud 2 ай бұрын
@@stephenmorse8811 according to who? Considering Elvis personally chose the musicians, except the bass player who auditioned after Burden insisted he come by, the instruments were what Elvis wanted on stage. And let's not forget, Elvis dictated how he wanted them to play, except lead guitar of course. Lead was always given freedom. There's no Glen Hardin history to draw from. But there's tons of Presley's stuff that Hardin drew from. So even if Hardin claims he arranged things, Elvis led the bands approach. He pushed the band to play more notes per measure. Even the drummer said he played a lot of fills because when Elvis moved he reacted accordingly knowing what Elvis wanted. I'm not claiming Elvis did everything, but Elvis was in charge. And the history of what is said by musicians who worked in the studio with Elvis, I get the feeling Glenn may be exaggerating/revising history a tad. I.e. Hardin saying "Elvis was good with voices", implying only with vocal arrangements, is demonstrably inaccurate.
@stephenmorse8811
@stephenmorse8811 2 ай бұрын
@@icanfartloud Wow. I have been an Elvis fan for 61 years and so I am not unfamiliar with the points you have made. I am not denying that Elvis knew the sound he wanted and would direct his musicians and backup singers to that end, as seen in the rehearsal sections in both versions of Elvis That's The Way It Is. However, as regards the orchestral arrangements, it would seem that Glenn Hardin contributed significantly in preparing music sheets - not something that Elvis could have done, which is not to demean Elvis's talent as a musician in its widest sense. Your point, "I get the feeling Glenn may be exaggerating/revising history a tad", is conjecture - may or may not be true. Equally, I was not there, and so my thoughts are/were just that - thoughts, based on what I have read or heard in books/articles/interviews over many, many years.

The phenomenon that was and still is...ELVIS. I am a lifelong musician and vocalist, and grew up with his music. I get goosebumps when I pay attention to all the layers in every recording, every live performance. Elvis coached his backup singers, helped with arrangements. There is an element of Elvis’s live performances that is frequently overlooked, but speaks volumes about his talent. Watching this, and others, look for moments when it’s clear that he is constantly aware of what’s happening musically behind him. He is always directing, guiding, urging his musicians as they play. He does it with physical gestures, with words, and often with just a look over his shoulder or a smile, acknowledging what he likes, encouraging sounds or tempos. He is in command of his stage. Such a Talent.

He passed when I was 10. I'm 55 now, and have listened to Elvis all of my life. The decades of other music comes and goes, but Elvis is the mainstay through it all. And yes, the emotion you feel, the chills that you feel when Elvis sings, it never goes away. I still get emotional. I still cry on some songs. I still get the chills. I've often said, "Elvis was an angel in a human body, sent to impart Heavenly grace through song". How else can you explain the combination of looks, humility, generosity, charisma, style, uniqueness among men, attraction, presence, voice, vocal range, control, emotion, and impact? Nothing like it has ever been experienced in the musical world. I'm glad to see the younger generations learning about, being introduced to, Elvis. Your reviews are different in that you point out some technical/musical aspects of his performances. Thanks for the respectful way you review Elvis.

There was nothing that compared to watching him live, each time putting a slightly different sound or word to the music, watching him perform, watching him lead his musicians and singers and interacting with them. Elvis had an album that was titled 50,000, 000 ELVIS FANS CAN'T BE WRONG , but that was a very conservative estimate of the number of Elvis fans that are out there....It's more like many hundreds of millions of fans worldwide. So, for anyone who laughs because someone Is a fan of Elvis , it just shows how ignorant they are.. It also shows what a lack of taste they have in music. Elvis has been , and will always be, a force to be reckoned with in music . He's imitated by many , has been a BIG influence on many, whether they want to admit it or not , and this guy single handidly changed music back in the 1950's Elvis did alone what it took 4 guys from England ( the Beatles ) to do in popularity later on . 45 years after his death and Elvis is STILL very much a big part of popular culture around the world ....Oh yeah, and Elvis has sold more than 1 billion records , yes, that's with a 'B' , far more than any other artist on the planet. So, laugh it up, hyenas , all you want...It's Elvis and his many fans that will always have the last laugh ...LONG LIVE THE KING OF ROCK AND ROLL, ELVIS PRESLEY !!!

I pity those people. My aunt is one of them. She (and anyone who says bad things about Elvis) are missing out on life. Elvis is music. He never encountered a genre he couldn't sing, he knew that music is a uniting force in the world, and that the best music should make people feel. It's no wonder or coincidence that he ended audiences just sitting there and then politely clapping when the song is done. It's also not a coincidence that Elvis is still popular or that youths of today are discovering him on their own which dispels all of the worries his OG fans had about Elvis dying out when they died out because the younger generation is not only finding him without help of an Elvis fan in the family but they're introducing him to the generation in between Elvis and social media/internet when his performances were hard to find and you had to be looking in the first place. However, the number of young people reclaiming the actual Elvis and celebrating the artist shows Elvis never left the building.

Loved your reaction Nina! This is an all time iconic song sung by the legend himself. The S&G version was my favourite until I heard Elvis sing this song... Wow! Love his powerful voice, the music, instruments and his backup singers were the best. A flawless performance. Thank you for this video. 👍⚡🇿🇦

“So what it boils down to was Elvis produced his own records. He came to the session, picked the songs, and if something in the arrangement was changed, he was the one to change it. Everything was worked out spontaneously. Nothing was really rehearsed. Many of the important decisions normally made previous to a recording session were made during the session. What it was a look to the future. Today everybody makes records this way. Back then Elvis was the only one. He was the forerunner of everything that’s record production these days. Consciously or unconsciously, everyone imitated him. People started doing what Elvis did.” - Bones Howe, Recording Engineer, as quoted in Jerry Hopkins’ 1971 book, "Elvis, A Biography"

"Elvis soundscape" is a wonderful term. He surrounded himself with the best musicians he could find and seems to have known how to bring out the best in them. I heard one of those on stage with him say that Elvis didn't care who the spotlight was on, as long as they were doing a good job. The music was what mattered. Check out "Without Love" and "Love Me, Love the Life I live." And for a wonderful early ballad "First In Line."

Hi Nina! Fantastic video I love how you explain the singing abilities that Elvis has, I'm not a singer so I hardly notice some of the in depth abilities that Elvis uses in his performances. What I would definitely recommend is his performance of "What now my love" or "You gave me a mountain" it really shows Elvis's vocal talent. Check it out if you haven't already heard it😉

Elvis knew what he wanted from a song that's why he was so involved in arranging the music. He was a true musical genius with his greatest gift being his phenomenal voice. He takes what was a great song and makes it even better. My biggest disappointment is that I never got to see him in person. He was scheduled to perform in Hershey in the Spring of 1978, I would have been there with "bells on". I was fortunate enough to watch the Aloha special (that will be 50 years this week!) live though. I LOVE ELVIS!!!

I love how he starts out low and slow ad builds the power. Every time the piano "sings" I have to twiddle my fingers over an imaginary keyboard, LOL. Next video? how about "Just pretend" from the same concert in 1970. Elvis has an incredible vocal "run' or riff at the end (if that's the correct term). An incredible example of vocal control.

A few words about Elvis Presley, Nightwish (Floor Jansen), Dimash, Angelina Jordan and another cool vocalists Alan Dean Foster, the famous American fantasy and science fiction writer who applied his writing talent to such hits as Star Wars and Star Trek, maintains a music section on his blog. "There are many good singers, fewer great singers, and a very small number who are unique singers. Diana is a natural dramatic contralto. This is the lowest range for a female singer. She is also polyphonic. Roughly, this means that when she sings she often sounds like more than one person singing at once. As you can imagine, the combination is extraordinary. So too is her full range. Singers at age 14 can do things that astonish us. Witness the careers of Jordan and the Dutch prodigy Amira Willighagen. But even when included in this company there is something special about Diana. I love the performances of the two singers I just mentioned, but they are (perfectly) controlled and measured. Diana is more akin to a force of nature. One of the most common descriptions of her performances is “shamanistic.” Some of this has to do with the remarkable timbre of her voice, some with the sheer intensity of her performing. In this she is closer to Floor Jansen. With both women you can see as well as hear the intensity, the emotion, contained with both the lyrics and the music. A duet between the two would be something magical." I would also like to draw your attention to this young vocalist Diana Ankudinova.

Alan Foster writes further:: "Her first two-minute performance on the show (all the initial performances are brief) is of a very dark version of Elvis Presley’s “Can’tHelp Falling in Love.” I’m not sure what you anticipate hearing, but I guarantee it won’t be anything like what you expect. The show’s production values are also outstanding. Two things I noticed immediately when comparing this performance to Diana’s previous ones: first, her control shows the results of ayear’s worth of professional voice training, and second, as she matures her power is becoming fully unleashed. When someone says she blows you away, it carries a literal meaning. " Alan's full article on Diana is posted in my Community section. I had a T-shirt made years ago that said, I may be old but I got to see all the really cool bands! Well, I'm 72 now and back in 1971, being a long haired musician myself, I went to see Elvis in concert in Dallas, Texas and I was pretty close to the front, dead center and I especially remember Elvis performing this song and it was almost a spiritual experience, totally blew me away as did the whole concert and remember Elvis was 100% at the top of his game then! I'll never forget it, one of the best performances I ever witnessed, and I've see literally seen everybody from 1965 and up.

For my entire life even though Elvis is maybe my favorite performer I never wanted to hear his version or anybody else's version of this song. Once I heard this performance by Elvis it's one of the best performances I've ever heard from anybody and it's crazy to say but it's even better than the Simon and Garfunkel version and they're the ones who wrote and performed the song originally. He gives it a gospel feel and it really gets in your bones because if you hear the song basically it's a way of saying to like a friend or a family member that I've got your back and the way he sings it you really feel it. I agree with you his version is extremely emotional.

Not sure how many fans knew this, but Elvis-for all intents & purposes, produced all of his recording sessions at RCA. Strangely, a production credit was rarely if ever listed on his singles or LPS, but it was Elvis who was the driving force-even as a 21 yr. old.
