Was 53 years old back on 19th March, been into DJing/Production since the early 90s, a time when there was NO easy way to learn. No KZfaq, no forums, nothing. Will defo say this though, since the advent of click and learn became a thing, I have come across no one who knows more, gives more, and grooves more than this here gal. And, best of all, we have hour upon hour of Mercurial Tones content to binge our way through.

I think the ninja concept teaches alot about arrangement and the general use of space in the mix. I find that finding space for elements already solves a lot of issues regarding mixing, because u solve a lot of issues regarding overcrowding from the beginning on.

Excellent quality of knowledge, at 48, I still find the high end of most modern productions over barring and harsh. Especially pop vocals with the 14/16kh whistle that's more time than not artificially added. Maybe it's just year's of vinyl has skewed my perspective 🤔

I think about this quite a lot. I'm 58, and very much aware that it's simply not possible for me to balance the >15k part of a mix by ear alone. I tend to do a lot of analysis using a spectrum analyser and comparing the curve to reference tracks (and sometimes even pink noise). UAD's Pultec plugins have a "high end rolloff at 15k", which I often end up applying just in case I've put too much top end in. It's a bit of a worry, but I suppose the best thing is to play your mixes to younger people and get their comments. (EDIT: ...and by "you", I don't mean you! At 48, you are "younger people" for me, haha!)

@@macronencerI appreciate your take on this. I know my hyper sensitivity in this range is more than likely the onset of age related hearing loss and years of being a DJ has already unbalenced the top end for me. Much like anyone playing off the left or right of a drummer before shilding was introduced, they have hearing loss in one ear. Crash cymbals being the worst culprit as are DJ monitors that are always to loud. (now I use in ear monitoring) I have always mixed how it feels right and been told by many I mix like vinyl records used to sound, after that my mastering engineer polishes and I forget about it. I tend not to go around in circles second guessing myself when time is better spent....

@@cuejosh9453 If you think crash cymbals are bad, try a piccolo snare :D I have done quite a few gigs, but the odd thing is that although I was usually to the left of the drummer my 4k dip in hearing is in my left ear, not my right. Hard to explain, just random luck I guess. For years now I've had custom-fitted flat-response earplugs and I always use them for gigs, although I stopped playing live a while back now. Thanks for the conversation!

I often replace hats with high toms or wood, etc because my aged ears (46) only likes hats if they're in Trance or Techno 🤣
