It did, it did. I was a little kid when this came out, had a chance to try it while visiting with my father a tech showcase. It felt like it would feel if you experience Ready Player One now. I spent 20m just swimming in the water of the castle-hub. It was hypnotizing. After playing pixellated linear games, seeing that thing was almost alien.

Sort of a late reply, but what were games like in the late 1990's to early 2000's for you? Like, what was it like for you when Super Mario Sunshine was announced? Was it just about as mindblowing as this was back then? Or was everyone just used to 3D games at that point.

The last time I truly remember having my mind blown was in 2005 when my friend got this real time lighting demo for his PC that was advertised as the "future of graphics and most realistic thing you had ever seen" and it was totally right....we were totally stunned that what we were seeing was possible, it was well beyond what was in the Splinter Cell games for original Xbox...this stuff was practically photographic it seemed. When I first got my hands on a Dreamcast in early 2000, that truly blew me away. The first two games I got to try were Crazy Taxi and Sonic Adventure. The water physics and graphics in the first stage of Sonic were beyond anything I had seen at that time. The first time I played through the full first stage my jaw was dropped basically the whole time

It blew my mind first time I seen it at toys R us. They had a playable N64 running the full game. I stayed there for hours playing it once I got the chance till they closed lol. I was just amazed seeing Mario in 3D for the first time. And the pressure sensitive analog stick made the experience so much more interactive. N64 was the first console to have truly realistic 3D. I told my sister about it and said how much I wanted it and couldn’t wait. She called like 5 places and they said they have them in stock a day early and are available to sell. We drove there and I threw my cash on the counter. Before we went she was like what’s so special about it. Can’t be that great. I was like you don’t understand! Mario looks REAL!! When we got to the department store where they were being sold she looked at the monitor seeing a video of the game being played for the first time and her jaw dropped lol

I love how Nintendo chose to introduce the graphics system and quality by using a live game example instead of just a video. It shows that they aren't hiding anything and that they are serious about the content of their system. I want to see more of that and less videos. It would be much more exciting, in my eyes.

It was for people back then. See, you’re privileged now with the internet and being able to just look up a guide or watch people speedrunning it in less than an hour or whatever. But most of us who played this back in the day had to figure it all out ourselves, and some of these secret stars were rather difficult to find. There were many times I just wandered about looking for a last red coin or trying to figure out the cryptic mission name for the star. FOR YOU it may not have been a 60 hour game, for many of us who played it in the late 90s, it was.

My favorite part is that this is actually being played and demonstrated live. Nowadays they try to cram as much as possible in one hour, but back then Nintendo took its time in showcasing this one title because that was it. That was the console. Everything the console could deliver was being showcased in this one game. Mario 64 is not about 3D graphics. It's not Crash Bandicoot, with its mentality stuck in 2D engines. It's about a whole new way of playing. A whole new way of interacting with digital worlds. That's what the N64 brought.

Though commercially the PS1 undoubtedly 'won' the generation, the N64 for me had the biggest wow factor at time of release of any console in history, thanks largely to Mario 64. I think the leap to true 3D gaming & it being done in such a polished way (unlike what we knew before through the likes of Starfox, Virtua Racing/Fighter & early, blocky PS1 games), made it seem space age. I don't think we'll ever see as big a leap in gaming again.

I don't care how many games PS1 got. It never got this masterpiece, or the other masterpieces the system had to offer. SM64, Banjo, Smash, Ocarina, Majora's, Diddy Kong Racing, Star Wars Shadows of the Empire, Goldeneye, Turok, Perfect Dark, Getforce Gemini.... Playing a bunch of average games makes for a full tummy, but no satisfaction. I much prefer fewer but masterpiece games. Games that make a generation. PS360 generation had literally no generation defining must have. If anything, the defining games of the past generation were things like Portal and Minecraft on the PC. I find that sad.

One of the greatest games ever made, god i played this game for hours and still today. This is when gaming was exciting and fun and getting an n64 was the cream on the top with a great big cherry on.

I remember seeing footage of this on the last night news. Back then I was young and got it confused with Super Mario Rpg which I thought this game was lol. My grandma got me Mario Rpg and it was fantastic but not this big Mario game. The follow Christmas my mom managed to get me a N64. I remember that Christmas well. Everyone was all about Tickle Me Elmo.

Depends on how stuck you were. Keep in mind in those days, you’d spend hours wandering aimlessly to find secret stars or other collectibles within the levels. These days, the game’s so old, none of these are secret anymore, so one could easily speedrun the game in an hour, but in those days, it definitely took “60-80 hours” to 100%.

E3 is too Reggie-fied now. I like how the product advertised itself back then. It's not Nintendo's fault seeing as how mainstream E3 has gotten (they didn't have a choice really). Just saying I'd rather be in a conference like the one in the video...

Power wise yeah N64 was the most powerful compared to PS1 and Saturn, but unfortunatley the PS1 still outsold it, just like now with the Wii outselling the PS3 and 360!
