Do you remember the Nintendo DS' DS Download Play feature? The best way to play local multiplayer in the early 2000s without having to own the actual game. What has nintendo done with this feature and how come it isn't on newer consoles?

I remember playing Download Play with the bros. We played Mario 64 mainly. I never liked Mario Kart DS’ version because the only character was shy guy when you weren’t hosting, but looking back, that was just a minor inconvenience

One of the most unique uses of Download Play I've seen is in the WiiWare game Maboshi's Arcade, that let you temporarily download a DS version of the game that you could play on the go.

And then, they went the extra mile with Mario Kart 7 on the 3DS. All courses available with the only drawback being that download players only get to play as Shy Guy and use only standard kart parts.

I missed this awesome feature. It was cool how you can enjoy multiplayer fyn if you don't have a copy of a specific game, and it was super convenient. Honestly, I kinda wish some modern games have their own type of download play by having you download an app on your pc or mobile device to have fun.

Something that I find curious is that the psp also had this feature, the only games that come to my mind when thinking about it are sonic rivals 2, bomberman, bomberman land, nfs most wanted and metal gear solid

I'm really hoping I finally am able to see that in action! The PSP calls the concept "Game Sharing". As a side note, on GBA, it's called "multiboot".

There was a guitar hero game on the Wii that allowed for download play onto a ds, it was black magic I tell you! It was pretty bland though imo, maybe because there was no one I could play that with at the time.

To be fair, it isn't only (Only, I accept how Nintendo can be a lot of times) Nintendo being greedy the reason that we don't have a switch download play or the fact that 3ds had less download play titles. DS download play works like this: the host ds works as a server and the client ds's download a chunk of the game and store it on its ram, and after that you play the game like a regular multiplayer game. So everytime you change circuit in Mario kart or minigame on Mario Party or Clubhouse games for example you will have a loading screen where every client ds downloads the new content through WiFi. For example, Kirby and the amazing mirror wouldn't work as a download play game because in that game every player has access to any part of the game in any moment, and that's probably why in super star the client ds only works as a controller. This system is more difficult to implement with bigger games. Zelda triforce heroes has download play, but the first time you use it on a client 3ds the game downloads files to that consoles storage to use any other time. Mario party star rush on 3ds and the clubhouse games sequel on switch have (or had) free client versions on the eshop for multiplayer, because regular download play would be difficult to implement or really slow.
