A playthrough of Konami's 1992 license-based beat 'em up for the NES, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles III: The Manhattan Project.
The Manhattan Project was a fantastic bookend to the TMNT trilogy of NES action games. Turtles III was built on the foundation laid by TMNT II: The Arcade Game ( • Teenage Mutant Ninja T... ), but instead of producing another conversion of a game that was originally intended for much more powerful hardware, Konami created a brand new game tailored specifically to the NES hardware. As excellent as the previous game was, it was a balancing act of compromises that was necessary to keep things as faithful to the original arcade experience as possible. TMNT III greatly benefits from the lack of any such restrictions tying the hands of the development team.
The biggest improvement comes in the gameplay. While there were differences in how the turtles played before, the differences in range and speed are now much more pronounced, and now each character gets his own unique special move. These distinctions inject a lot more variety into the gameplay, and they imbue these 8-bit sprites with a healthy bit of personality.
The stages also change things up often. Enemies can drop into the playfield from the background or leap up through the floor, and there are a load of hazards to deal with - be careful not to get shoved off the side of a bridge or electrocuted by a giant neon sign!
The graphics and sound are top notch, too. The stage graphics look fantastic (there's so much color!), each boss makes a dramatic and memorable entrance, instances of slowdown and flicker are far less common and less severe than they were in TMNT II, and there are a load of new cutscenes that link the stages together. The music is a fantastic compliment to the visuals, too. It's upbeat, insanely catchy, and peppered with small voice clips that give it a fun sense of 90s cool. There's not a bad track in the game, and it's one of my favorite soundtracks on the NES.
Overall, The Manhattan Project is an absolute blast to play, it's one of the most stylish and modern-feeling beat 'em ups on the platform, and it's my favorite game of the NES trilogy. As the bridge that spans the gap between The Arcade Game and Turtles in Time, one could hardly ask for better.

Back in the day when Konami were technological wizards. That animated opening on the NES was just out of this world. And it's pure insanity how well they used the limited NES audio output; the composers were some of the best at the time.

And here we are, compadres. One of the finest outings for the heroes in a half shell, TMNT III is an even bigger improvement over the last NES outing in every conceivable way. Konami brought they are A-team talent and went all out to push the system to the limits. In this game, the Turtles play a bit more different than last time as each of them has different attack range and most importantly, they have their own unique special attack, albeit costing one point of health on each use. However it can be used all time before losing a life as a last ditch of effort, which is especially essential against the bosses. Along with TiT, this is my absolute favorite TMNT game ever, and also it was of the first video games that I ever played!

Cowabunga! It's the ultimate 8-bit shelldown with the Foot. With a ton of great setpieces, enemies and bosses. The idea of sacrificing your health to perform each turtle's unique special attack is an odd one, but the rockin' soundtrack, level design and charm are all as present as ever. The presentation is at a whole new level. I get a ninja kick out of seeing the colorful sprites, and hearing the digitized "COWABUNGA!" The only thing it's missing is the plentiful Pizza Hut advertising.

Didn't land this one till a few years into collecting, a friend got it for me, Hyperstone Heist and Turtles in Time all at the same time, the games were still fairly priced back then. Once my friend got it for me off Ebay, I went to a long defunct Play N Trade about 20 miles from where I live, and this freaking game was in there for a little cheaper than my friend paid for my copy. I left it there out of respect for what my friend did, but deep down inside I wanted to buy that copy. Didn't matter, days later my TMNT games showed up, this one first, then the 16 bit ones shortly after. This was the pinnacle of the trilogy on NES, and at the time Konami was entering their prime years, yes they had put out some bangers prior, and a few duds, but they were starting to hit their stride around this time, or shortly before.

The CIB has skyrocketed in price as it is exponentially rarer than the loose game. Around 10 years ago, a pawn shop near my house got in about a dozen cib mint NES games that the owner had bought from a collector. The ones I remember were TMNT II, TMNT III, Mega Man IV, Mike Tyson's Punch Out, Double Dragon II and Double Dragon III - all wicked games. For some reason they were all priced the same, which made no sense to me. I only could afford to buy one at that point and I picked Mega Man IV. I always regret that move, I wish I would have chosen TMNT III because I had never seen a cib one before and I've never seen one since. Ironically, down the road I traded the Mega Man IV cib to another collector for TMNT IV cib, but I still wish I had the TMNT III. Anyways, I thought I'd share a collecting story haha.

Hopefully Konami doesn't fuck up The Cowabunga Collection. All of the games I using the arcade titles finally available outside specific unlocks in other games or downloads on 7th gen consoles.

Yeah, especially since those unlock versions weren't great with their redone audio.

I'm just noticing now that the twin towers are in the opening cutscene. Man this game was amazing. What nes game has cutscenes for that matter, nevermind this good!

Michelangelo and Donatello were my favorites because they're "special moves" hit harder than the other 2, and were better to defeat the big bosses, including Krang and Super Shredder.

My cartridge just kicked the bucket. Would get to the copyright stuff and then go black. Tried everything with no luck. Had to toss it.

I actually prefer the second game, but 3 is good too, as is turtles in Time,

The 3rd one is better to me. I think the 2nd one was a bit too easy except for the last 2 or 3 levels. I felt like the Manhattan Project was a harder version of the 2nd one which makes it more challenging and fun to play.
