A playthrough of Ultra's 1990 license-based beat 'em up for the NES, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II: The Arcade Game.
Played through as Leonardo.
Going into the 1990s, Konami was on a white hot streak with the Turtles license, and this was among the highest profile third-party games I remember ever being released on the NES. Advertisements were everywhere for it, it had a super-heavy Pizza Hut endorsement deal going on (remember those in-game advertisements and the Pizza Hut coupon included in the box?), and even if it didn't quite match the stunning presentation of the arcade game ( • Teenage Mutant Ninja T... ), it provided an excellent analogue of the gameplay that made that one such a hit a year prior.
(They even kept the woman on the skateboard who screams in terror as you attack her for a bonus point! How awesome is that?)
The graphics were killer by NES standards, it featured Konami's usual brand of great music with some sick bass and drum lines, and best of all, it allowed for 2-player co-op play. It's actually a fair bit more difficult than the arcade game was on its "normal" setting - it will kill you over and over until you can reliably judge the timing and position of your attacks, and since the move set has been stripped back a bit, things will take a bit of adjusting to if you're coming to it fresh off the arcade game - but once you have the basics down, it's pretty reasonable.
You can't fault the game for not being "arcade perfect" considering that the NES hardware dates back to 1983, and it's one helluva close approximation given that the coin-op was on the cutting edge of arcade tech in 1989. Konami went out of their way to make up for the difference, too. There are two brand new stages that are exclusive to this version, and a couple of the arcade game's stages have been extended in length. There are also a few new bosses, including the mutated fly version of Baxter Stockman who replaces the Bebop and Rocksteady combo at the end of the parking garage stage, as well as the Tora and Shogun characters that were dreamt up specifically for the NES game by the creators of the comic.
Finally, if it has been awhile since you last played, be sure to keep in mind that when you press A and B together (A has to be pressed just ever so slightly before B), your turtle will do a slower moving, much more powerful attack that can clear multiple enemies at once with some good timing. It isn't a "special move" that drains your life gauge, so you can spam it as much as you like, and it's worth taking the time to learn how to properly use it. With it, the game moves along at a far brisker pace than you'd see sticking to simple slashes and jump kicks.
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II: The Arcade Game was a hit when it was new, and it has proven itself to be an enduring fan favorite of the NES library over the years. Whatever it lacked in flash, it more than made up for in sheer playability.
Cowabunga!

I remember the game increasing its difficulty at later stages, so I was abusing loophole in the game: the game has no timer, the boss at sewer stage can provides infinite supplies of minions, while the minions can harm you they can be easily disposed of and you got 1 pt for each, and the boss itself can not harm you directly. You guess it, I use that to farm points for a few extra lives.

The NES hardware was far from cutting edge by 1990, but that didn't stop Konami from delivering an impressively faithful conversion of the hit arcade game that packed a lot of brand new, platform-exclusive content.

Thanks for the play through. It's really hard to decide which is the "best" Konami NES game, but it is definitely between this game, Castlevania III and Contra. Personally, I think it's TMNT II.

@@rjcupid You ever play The Lone Ranger? It’s a late generation NES title from Konami that blends platforming, adventure, first person maze exploring and shooting, and gambling mini games. It didn’t get much attention when it came out, but it’s amazing, and is my favorite game Konami did for the NES.

@yusakug You know your stuff! Yes I own that game. That is a real hidden gem. I would also put Bucky O'Hare up there with amazing lesser known Konami games. I think Lone Ranger is one of the least known/most obscure games on the NES. I agree with you that it's an excellent game. Have a good day.

Back in 1985 though, it was cutting edge, especially compared to Atari, Colecovision, and such. Seriously, most 80s game consoles made the NES look like a PS5. Having character sprites as good as the arcade, and 8-bit music synths with bass, were a big deal.

The NES was obviously not capable of recreating the cutting edge stuff the arcade game offered, but Konami was able to keep all that game's content even with the compromises miraculously. At the same time they added exclusive stuff in order to give the game extra length. Two new stages alongside with the two OC boss characters (The two bounter hunters hired by Shredder: Tora and the Shogun) designed by the franchise's creators. And yes, this game heavily advertised Pizza Hut, hence the free coupon for a pan pizza players receive when buying a new copy of the game. So, don't be surprised if those billboards will get edited out in the upcoming Cowabunga Collection. A vast improvement over the first NES outing.

The first one honestly wasn't that bad, and no more harder then the original Megaman and Castlevania games. (And those are still beloved.) Even James Rolfe admitted he actually likes it, despite it's flaws, and his AVGN character giving it a bad review. I think it had some good ideas, like the ability to stratedgically switch characters, (handy when one is low on HP) the overhead map and side scrolling stages mixed together reminiscent of Zelda 2, and the ability to attack in 4 different directions, (kinda like Smash Brothers) were pretty cool. Some of the bosses were impressive for NES standards, like the huge Technodrome, with multiple parts you could destroy.
