I spent the past couple weeks playing every F-Zero game, and now I have tons of thoughts on this amazing series that I want to share. I'm so glad F-Zero 99 released and pushed me to go back and play these games, as they're all fantastic. (And yes, I know I didn't technically play EVERY F-Zero game, but I got all the big ones)

Seeing people play the other F-Zero games after playing 99 is such a breathtaking thing to see after such a long hiatus. I'm really glad you enjoy the series and share the love for F-Zero that we do as well. I have no doubt we won't have to wait very long for another F-Zero game to play.

This time last year I sat down and forced myself to play the copy of fzero gx I found at a thrift store, I spent about two months out in my garage after work trying to beat the goddamn thing but is now firmly cemented as my all time favorite gamecube game bar none. I don't know.... Nintendo is still Nintendo, and their confusing dinosaur decisions always have to be taken into consideration. I wouldn't be surprised if this is the ONLY F zero thing they have planned for a very long time because Nintendo is terribly out of touch with not just their customer base... But all of the gaming community as a whole. Though I do so very much hope I'm wrong cause boy do we need a new one.

You mention that you feel like F-Zero 99 is slower, and that you like how you're able to see further than in past games. Based on my observations, these two elements are very closely related to one another! The speed in 99 compared to SNES F-Zero seems to be about on par, reading similar clear times and top speeds for the machines. However, having a wider field of view and being able to see further down the track gives the impression that you are moving a lot slower than in the original.

It is so wild to see a bunch of youtubers being enlightened to this series after so long! Growing up, my brothers and I cherished this series and we worked together to inch our way through the GPs and story mode of GX. but no one else we knew had even played the games, and we just couldn't' understand why this series went so unnoticed. I remember it took us almost an entire decade of on and off attempts between the three of us to beat GX story mode on very hard. One of my favorite gaming achievements.

Really nice to see someone not trash on Maximum Velocity for once. It's not an easy game by any means, but it's not as terrible as some people make it out to be. By the way, losing speed while being on critical health was not new to MV, but it was carried over from the original F-Zero. Just thought you'd be interested to know that.
@Ray_2112
@Ray_2112 8 ай бұрын
I don't get the bad opinions on Maximum Velocity anyways...I played it for years back then and think it controls really well. It's such an improvement over the SNES original, maybe aside from the iconic soundtrack which is hard to beat, but overall I think it's more enjoyable to play and has more interesting tracks. I guess most people haven't put a lot of time in it and just tried it for a short time...
@SorcererLance
@SorcererLance 8 ай бұрын
MV wasn't bad at all, it's essentially and literally the next-generation sequel to the SNES original, I guess technically an "F-Zero 2" if you ignore the Japan-exclusive "BS F-Zero"... as the gameplay hasn't changed or improved very much, just the graphics went for pre-rendered 3D models digitized as sprites for the cars as all the tracks, locales, music and racers were all brand-new. I suppose the main appeal of it back then, especially as a launch title GBA game, was just being able to play F-Zero on the go... when that used to be unheard of at the time. Though to be fair, after the improvements of gameplay mechanics and track designs from F-Zero X, it did kinda feel like a downgrade going back to the SNES-era gameplay. It did however tide us over until GX was released.
@Galiaverse
@Galiaverse 8 ай бұрын
Agreed. I think a lot of people miss the nuances that MV provides, being quick to play down the game purely because of the Blast Turn mechanic. I agree that repeatedly tapping the acceleration as opposed to releasing it conflicts with ergonomic design. But not all machines are made equal, and Blast Turning actually feels different for every vehicle. The mistake people make is thinking the acceleration needs to be _spammed,_ yet that doesn't apply to every vehicle. In fact that's one of MV's most underrated strengths: while the character designs per vehicle can feel underwhelming, the vehicle mechanics are anything but. Acceleration, Top Speed, Grip, Turn Handling, Weight, Boost Power, Boost Time, Speed Stability, and Jump Height. This really makes it rewarding to master a vehicle and go from meandering through each course to blazing through every turn and obstacle. And there were not just 10 of these vehicles to solve, but four master trophies to score for each one. Truly a rewarding game once understood!

Most people that trash on MV are the same people that never found out idling on the main menu for long enough gives you a tutorial video with control overlay. If the original F-zero is the introduction to the format, then MV at its highest levels is like a 'bridge' between the 2d and 3D games and actively rewards you for learning slide turns, drift turns, and of course blast turns. As someone who is capable of slinging the Jet Vermilion around Bianca City Ultimate without hitting a single wall, when it all clicks, it clicks *good* AND it helps teach you the basis for the more nuanced controls for the 3D titles... including slide turns, drift turns, and blast turns. There's a huge difference in how you approach X and GX machines like the Night Thunder and Crazy Bear before and after you play MV, as an example, and I *love* that aspect.

The first time I ever played Fzero was back in 2003. I had gotten Mario Kart Double Dash for Christmas and it came with a bonus disc where you could play a track in GX. I remember playing it and being so lost and getting a headache. Fast forward to 2006 and I saw the game at Kmart and decided to buy it and try it out again and I instantly fell in love. Ever since 2006 I have put so many hours into playing GX and the other games. I have been telling people since 2008 how amazing the series and GX is ( GX is my fav video game of all time) and all of us Fzero lovers have been waiting for so many years for a new game for other people to understand just how amazing this series is. It is so refreshing to see that because of 99, people are finally starting to see it.

I love taking on challenges in video games, I've beaten Super Mario Bros. Lost Levels, Battletoads, Platinumed most FromSoftware games. However...THE ONLY CHALLENGE I have never been able to beat....has been "Save Jody" in F-Zero GX. It requires absolute perfection and precision that I have never been able to complete. I've put HUNDREDS of hours into F-Zero GX and I hope for the series this game can come back with its high-speed 30 player action.

This had to be like 15 years ago, but even now I can still remember the day I spent trying to clear "Save Jody" on Very Hard difficulty. I spent roughly 6 straight hours grinding that mission over and over and over again, only stopping to grab water or use the toilet. By the time I finally beat it, I didn't even have the mental or physical energy left in me to celebrate; I just flopped down on my back in front of the TV, heaved a sigh of relief and groaned "Finally...". Good times.

F-Zero GX kind of ruined the futuristic racing subgenre for me. It's gameplay mechanics and physics are just absolute perfection, no other racing game has been able to give me that sense of extreme speed yet absolute control over your vehicle that F-Zero GX has to offer, it's just something that has to be experienced first hand to enjoy. I have played things like Redout, Fast RMX and Wipeout, and don't get me wrong, i've enjoyed them, they´re good games, however, every time I play one of those, I can't help but get this feeling of "this isn't F-Zero" It's like a curse you have to bear once you have played such masterpiece, that's how perfect I think F-zero GX gameplay is. And that's why im so happy that something like F-Zero99 exists, maybe it will be able to bring back some spotlight to a franchise that desperately needs it, and that has been long dead.

I'm born in '91 and got F-zero X as an 8 year old. I remember playing it with friends as a young kid, and them even just enjoying to sit next to me and watch me try to beat the death race in less than 2 minutes or beating the grand prix on Master difficulty - which I didn't do until I was about 12-13 years old (and how excited we got!!!). The music has always been really special to me, and is probably what got me into rock and metal. I remember struggling for so long trying to find a CD - and the overjoy of my friend finding a download of it! I still frequently listen to it. I remember all the machines and drivers - they feel like acquaintances - love the design, even though it's simplistic and old. GX has SO much to offer, and I've enjoyed it A LOT. But I've always felt the design and music, although higher fidelity, is less to my liking. I haven't played any other F-zero game until 99 came now, but I've always said X is my favourite game of all time. The nostalgia is strong, the music legendary, and the sense of speed and risk-reward mechanics are just addictive. I'm hoping the success of 99 finally makes a new modern masterpiece in style of X (and GX) possible! Thanks for this nice video, and glad you enjoyed the games!

I always assumed it became obsolete with the popularity of Mario Kart and that’s why Nintendo basically let it die. After almost 30 hours of playing X, I realize how different F-Zero is. I played the original F-Zero a couple times like 15 years ago, I played Fast Racing Neo on the Wii U and I played F-Zero X once or twice on NSO when it came out... but it never really "clicked", I never liked these games so much. I cant explain very well why that is, but I guess I didnt think they were good enough, I thought they were "just another racing game". I dont know exactly what F-Zero 99 did right, but it clearly did something very right, because I also didnt care very much about the other 99 games, but I loved F-Zero 99. I downloaded it just to try it out and when I realized, I was playing it over and over again, and having lots of fun, which made me want to go back and play the older games. I am now playing F-Zero X on the 64 and I am having a blast with it, it is very fun. I just cant beat the 4 cups on expert, but I am getting better at it. I have only one gripe with GX’s story mode: Chapter 7’s insane difficulty. I’ve been stuck attempting it on *hard*, not even very hard, for a while, while I conquered all of the 5 cups in Master, and finished all other story chapters (aside from the first one I need to do it too) in very hard. I fucking love this game. It’s a blast to play through every time, and I’ll never forget The Skull’s Sonic Phantom carrying me to victory in his nervous, fragile, yet agile and fast car, exactly the kind of machine I like. F Zero X will always be my favourite because I played that from the age of 7 onwards until I packed the N64 away. GX is an almost equal but the nostalgia of X wins out, albeit, just. I liked how the X and GX games kept expanding, once you thought you finished the game, something else was available. Think you've beaten the hardest level, think again, nailed those championships, here's a new one. Like it was a whole other level of dedication for a fast-paced arcade style game. The fact it was also skill based rather than luck or sandbagging, if you make a mistake it punishes you and it made you hone your skills if you wanted to succeed. I really want these games back in a purchasable form rather than an NSO form.

Now that I’ve played several hours of 99, my thirst for a 3D game with online multiplayer has grown stronger. The gameplay is so addicting, and this is coming from someone who couldn’t get used to the original F-Zero, even after playing the bejesus out of Maximum Velocity. Maybe we don’t need 99 players, but 30 players would still make for exhilarating races. Something to note about GX is that it has a strong following of high-level players as well. Competitively, it’s kind of the Smash Bros Melee of racing games. The physics engine allows for tons of advanced techniques that pushes the skill ceiling of the game through the goddamn roof. I doubt that a GX follow-up would have those kinds of tech, particularly to keep online multiplayer from feeling too hard to get into, but that just assures that people will still play GX. Now to find an AX cabinet. I just have to have the full force feedback in first person to get the true F-Zero experience.

you mention in the maximum velocity section that spamming the accelerate and slide buttons felt more controllable, and one part of this is a feature called blast turning, which increases your grip massively by letting go and pressing the acceleration, spamming this just means you have it for the period you spam. spamming slide isnt necessary here, in fact, just holding it is a better option. the reason you felt it have such a big impact here, is because its the most major in maximum velocity, being nearly necessary for reasonable times. the mechanic only exists in the 2d style games. in my opinion, maximum velocity still holds up insanely well for racing games in their entirety, even when its a relatively small GBA game.

I'm so happy that F-Zero 99 exist. Hopefully this tells Nintendo how much we love the franchise. I would like to see a new game in the style of GX. I mean they don't have to make GX2 or anything (unless they want to). I just mean a new F-Zero game that has a really good story and awesome features like GX did. As you can probably guess, F-Zero GX is my favorite F-Zero game. Although I need to get good as it again because I have not had a chance to play it for a long time until now.

Watch the anime. I knew F-Zero thanks to Captain Falcon in the original Smash Bros, however it was when I watch the TV show that made me knew I had to play the games (which started with F-Zero X by the way) and the it didn't disappoint.

I’ve only ever played X and GX. I suck at them but they are still so much fun. X is my personal favorite just because I like the music and art style more. GX is wild. You should check some speedruns of both games, but GX players are godlike at the game. And then you should check out Tool Assisted run where the game gets completely cracked open and you got custom machines flying so far out of bounds and still landing back on the track. They’re insane lol! Btw, you may already know this, but you can unlock all the Arcade machines and tracks in F-Zero GX. There’s actually a fully functional version of the actual Arcade game hidden in GX’s code that you can unlock with a GameShark. Great video and welcome to the F-Zero community!

I first knew about F-Zero thanks to a magazine, but still felt surprised by Captain Falcon in Smash 64, as I didn't know about F-Zero X. I played Maximum Velocity first, and the SNES was next. I got hooked immediately. And then came GX, 'nuff said. I later played X and it was great, too. I was lucky to find an AX machine, it was one of the greatest experiences I ever had with video games, let alone racing games. It even lets you change to a first-person perspective! Sadly, I could no longer find it after a while. Just when I thought the franchise was done for, 99 was released. To say that I was really excited by the reveal would be an understatement. Sorry for the wall of text, it's just that it's great that 99 has encouraged many people to take a closer look at this franchise. Great video!

The f zero 99 hype made me go back to gx. I was really young back then a'd really bad at racing games so I had the f zeros but any difficulty aside from easy was a bit too much for me. Going back to gx and conquering the story mode and (well, only ruby so far but) one master cup has been tremendously fun. It's extremely humbling just how mucj stuff there is in gx. Especially since the game hides it from you "Oh you finished the super hard story mode? That was only normal difficulty." "Great you played a bunch through the three cups, here's an extra one. Hope you didn't like walls too much." And of course the AX extras, even though they were apparently easy to unlock if connected to the arcade game, but having an in game, brutal way of unlocking everything is so good. Reminds me of the unlocking requirements of the jet vermilion in maximum velocity we didn't know about it and my brother managed to pull through all cups in master and seeing the jet at the end (as weird as the machine is to control though), that was special. I'm much more of a casual fan of f zero, but even as a kid the drivers the universe, and just how fun it was even though it was brutal, I never forgot. Hopefully 99 manages to give us the new 3d f zero the fanbase deserves. Seeing how most major franchise were able to break through new grounds on the switch, maybe f zero will finally get the entry it deserves!

The nostalgia rush as soon as F-Zero X came up... 😭 I played the hell out of that game on my N64 (rip), never really having access to an SNES and thus the original, and always wanted to try GX but never had access to a GameCube for it lol, but it looks awesome. 99's definitely taking me some getting used to, but it's cool that there's a new game in the series to try out, and that it's motivated folks to check out the other ones.

Several pointers from a long time fan of F-Zero. Pull up just before landing from jump pads to maintain your speed, learn how to powerslide (X and GX), use side attacks to take out opponents, adjust the camera slightly above (default view for GX) it actually works better then the one you were using.

I really hope for a true GX sequel. I'm just imagining GX gameplay with some of the stuff GP legends brought (more racers, expanded story, locations, etc). And if they had a 99 mode as one of the vs. modes, where you could choose from ~50 pilots would be great, bring back Death Race from X as a vs. mode, etc.

5:45 this is also the core gameplay loop of 200cc MK, which is why it annoys me when people just say "the tracks weren't meant for it" and give up. The tracks were not meant to be intuitive but they are all possible to master to the point you can blaze through them. Also in 200cc you don't need to press brake 9/10 times, just drift earlier, a VERY common mistake a lot of people make ;)

This video was awesome. I'm so glad you were inspired to try out the series. I love this franchise to say it's my favorite racing franchise of all time is an understatement, it truly is my favorite Nintendo series of all time with Starfox just below F-Zero. Here are my thoughts on how I would rank the games. 7.) F-Zero 99 I'm going to be brutally honest here, this game kind of ticked me off. After waiting over a decade here in the West this is what we were given? GrandPrix locked behind timed events, forced to play online and can't even access the game without connection, no lobby with friends, and I just can't play the game offline and play Grand Prix whenever I want?... all wrapped into a paid online service game... honestly this feels like it's trying to be Mario Kart rather than actual F-Zero. I'm sorry, but I just can't...I'm glad we finally got something after all these years but compared to what we had in the past this is not it, cheif. To a longtime fan like me this kind of felt like a slap in the face just like the Mario Kart cameos or how Super Smash Brothers doesn't show the franchise proper respect.) 6.) Maximum Velocity. Just felt dated, but still challenging and fun. I really liked how they tried to do something different with the franchise and was disappointed as a kid when I realized that they weren't part of the GX cast. It would have been cool to see this next generation of racers more fleshed-out on the big Home console! But as the first handheld game in the series it was definitely lots of fun and I really enjoyed playing it on my Gameboy Advance! And of course after the disappointment of F-Zero 99 I grew to appreciate this game even more! 5.) GP Legend The game is just simply too easy. F-Zero has always been known for its difficulty and this game was just sort of a Twist in a bad way. It also doesn't help that zero test was poorly designed and getting gold trophies is actually impossible with certain missions. The game felt rushed. But still fun and glad I still have my original copy. I'm pretty sure if the unamate I then would have performed better and this game was given more development time it could have easily been more well-received in my eyes. Regardless of that though my brother and I enjoyed this entry in the series and thought it was fun to see a modern take on the moat seven formula along with getting up very early on Sunday mornings to watch every episode until it was unfortunately cancelled. F-Zero GP Legend was and still is criminally underrated just like this entire franchise has always been. Fun game with an awesome Anime. 4.) The original F-Zero Okay so I know I'm being bias here but seriously I just can't even begin to explain how much my older brother and I are adored this game growing up. While some people grew up playing stuff like Pokemon or Super Mario my brother and I grew up playing F-Zero. Like I stated before it was the very first video game I ever played. I will always have a soft spot for this game and it always will be my favorite game on the Super Nintendo. 3.) F-Zero Climax Unfortunately this was a japan-exclusive. But that never stopped me from getting a copy of the game as soon as I could. I still have my copy to this day with the original box instruction manual and everything. This game blows GP Legend out of the water. It is simply the better game with more fleshed out track design and better gameplay mechanics the game overall is just more refined and is definitely the best out of the Gameboy titles. I only wish that the game had a larger budget with more development time and if it was brought over to the US that would have made it even better! It's just a shame that this was the final game in the series and it wasn't even brought over to the western side of the world. Such an awesome game but just like F-zero BS Grand Prix 2, it was limited to only Japan unfortunately. 2.) F-Zero GX (All AX content unlocked) I know this is definitely the fan-favorite, and for good reason! This was the very peak of the franchise itself. This is definitely the superior F-Zero title of them all without question. However my biggest issue was just how demanding the physics are when it comes to the gameplay and just how absolutely brutal the difficulty Can really be. I remember this was the very first video game I ever bought with my own money and man was I glad! What honestly story mode on very hard and Grand Prix on Master difficulty or just too brutal for me! My older brother actually had to be the one to complete them since no matter how much I practiced I just couldn't do it I wasn't good enough LOL! As demanding and as brutal as the game can be I still love to go back to it to this day. I am so grateful that I still have our old memory card and it still had our original file! Such an amazing soundtrack with great graphic design even for today. I just wish Nintendo would have made this the comeback game instead of F-Zero 99...so disopointing. 1.) F-Zero X (With expansion kit) Man I was absolutely blown out of the water when a relative stopped by to give us a Nintendo 64 as an early (shared) birthday gift from my older brother and I! I was so excited because one of the games we got was F-Zero X! My brother and I were already so familiar with the first game we couldn't wait to dive into its official sequel! The four original F-Zero Pilots, as well as their iconic machines had returned on N64! Looking more cool and stylized than ever! Along with 26 brand new pilots and machines all with different stats strengths and weaknesses. We absolutely played the living crap out of the game as much as we could. Coming home from school finishing our homework and then playing to our heart's content. Getting better at the game over the years and eventually Unlocking The Joker and X cups as well as the rest of the vehicles was just such an awesome reward. ( especially the unique Victory quote for Captain Falcon if you're able to win master mode and get first place. ) I understand why g x on the GameCube is seen as the superior game and is definitely the fan-favorite I really do but for me this truly is my favorite entry in the series. It's just such a shame that the awesome expansion kit which gave us two brand-new Grand Prix cups along with a track and vehicle editor and an awesome remix of Rainbow Road all had to be locked behind the expansion kit that was once again exclusive to only Japan. Of course I got it eventually and I enjoy the crap out of it but man if this was brought over to the West it would have just been so cool! Thankfully I know a little bit of Japanese so I can get by with certain things that require translating, but it just would have been good to have the game in English or German. Regardless though I'll Always Love F-Zero X. I really hope this franchise will make its true Grand return on the next Nintendo console. It's been long overdue. Even though I myself don't like F-Zero 99 very much, I still play it here and there but it's just not the same for me. Though I'm glad to know the game is being received very well and that people are enjoying it! I hope it can get a full physical release like Tetris 99 did. That way everybody can still enjoy and play it years later even after the servers shut down so the game will be available forever in some capacity. But I really am praying and hoping that we can get a modern F-Zero full-fledged title on the next upcoming Nintendo console! And I hope it will have content that is the amount of astrox with the expansion kit or GX with all of the ax content. (None of that modern gaming BS!) Sorry about the very long comment I'm just so passionate about this series and now that it's finally starting to get attention after all of these years I feel like I can finally be open and talk about this awesome franchise without getting sh-t just because it's not as popular as the mainstream Nintendo stuff. Awesome video and I'm glad you enjoyed your experience going through the franchise! I hope others will be inspired bye videos like yours! (My top 3 favorite Pilots - #28 Super Arrow - Machine: King Meteor. #10 James McCloud - Machine: Little Wyvern. And my favorite! #19 Leon - Machine: Space Angler.) Thank you for sharing your experience with this video. Once again I'm glad you were willing to give it a shot!

for the longest time GX was my favourite but recently I've realised Maximum Velocity is. Each car feels unique, the controls are absolutely perfect and its so satisfying unlocking the Jet Vermillion by beating every cup on Master with every car and it's a 100% worthwhile completionist bonus too, considering how good it is. What you described in the GBA games is something called Blast Turning, where you basically spam the accelerate button and it helps you take corners faster. You can also drift in the opposite direction from a turn while turning into the corner to get a nice racing line. I know the game isn't for everyone, especially when you go from SNES to N64 then back to GBA, but I see Maximum Velocity as the perfect sequel to the SNES game. It's the same with a lot of F-Zero games. Hard to control at first but once you dial in the techniques it becomes amazing. Blasting round courses as the Fighting Comet with perfect racing lines is so satisfying! Just an extra point but I know you said you didn't play AX. If you complete all the cups on Master in GX you will unlock the AX tracks so it's worth doing and you'll get an extra cup out of it. The tracks are also absolutely fantastic! But the great thing about this series is that almost every game plays different and people will have their favourites. Glad you enjoyed the series and great video man!

F-Zero has so much "extra" content. (1) F-Zero SNES has 4 more racers, and 10 more courses from BS F-Zero Grand Prix, though 5 courses have been lost to time. The F-Zero Final project adds in the racers and the 5 courses that have been recovered. (2) F-Zero GX has an arcade version, titled AX. There are 3 ways to play it. First, he Dolphin and Nintendont emulators can now run the original arcade ISO (and also the 2 Mario Kart Arcade GP games). Second, the full arcade game is ON THE GX DISC, and can be accessed with a simple gameshark code, though some of the graphics and music differ. Lastly, there is a patch called AX Enhanced that can be applied to a GX ISO to convert it into a more accurate copy of AX that can be played on a modded gamecube. (3) F-Zero GP Legend had 40 e-reader cards that included staff ghosts, extra racers, and 20 more courses. A patch exists to load all of these into the original game. (4) And lastly, F-Zero Climax has been fully translated to English by fans. There's so much F-Zero goodness to go around!

Add: X has the 64DD-exclusive Expansion Kit, which comes with new music and GPs (including F-Zeroized Rainbow Road music), a machine builder simpler but similar to GX's, and a fully-fledged track builder that you can make almost anything with, complete with a custom GP to put those tracks into and race on. Some of the assets for these were already on the original ROM, such as all of the machine parts and english-language buttons for the editor. There are some modded ROMs that put these together for a flash cartridge to play it on a regular N64, with expansion pak.
