While Guardian Spirits are not new to Nioh 2, the manner in which they are handled is. No longer do you upgrade them to higher and higher levels, but now instead you slot Soul Cores into them. This provides you with passive benefits as well as the option to use new powerful Yokai Abilities. Living Weapon has also been replaced with something called Yokai Shift, which allows you to change into a demon form for a limited time, granting new moves and abilities. Before we get into all that, however, first let’s discuss the types of Guardian Spirits.
There are 3 types of Guardian Spirits in Nioh 2 and those are Brute, Feral and Phantom. Every single Guardian Spirit falls into one of these categories, and determine not only your Yokai Shift appearance and moveset, but also your Burst Counter. Each Guardian Spirit also has an element associated with it represented by its color. Red is Fire, Blue is Water and Yellow is Lightning. Guardian Spirits can be any of the 3 types (Brute, Feral, Phantom), regardless of their associated element.

You can also use Soul Cores when Soul Matching Yokai Weapons to reduce the cost significantly. This gets quite expensive later on in the game, and this is a great way to save you Gold if you are low or just don’t want to blow it all on one Soul Match. This only applies to Yokai Weapons though and cannot be used for other weapons and armor.

Wanted to add a few things! 4:58 Feral can still counter attacks that strike it outside of the I-frames for the counter related bonuses, but the attack will deal damage to them. The most reliable way to counter is to treat it like a parry and dodge straight into an attack animation, but it can still trigger a counter from an evasive motion if the timing is tight enough. Phantom's behaves more like a perfect-guard and must get hit directly by the attack it is countering but will never take damage if the attack is successfully countered. Brute's will just counter anything it hits even if the attack animation has not started yet, so long as the red flash has appeared. Using it within range as soon as possible is generally the best option to avoid taking damage. 7:19 You can also inherit a core's inheritable ability onto an eligible demon-weapon. 8:44 Also worth mentioning the Shiftling passive skill Dragon's Echo which helps you retain a slight amount of the initial Anima cost after using a yokai ability that matches the guardian's type.

I just want to say THANK YOU for these videos. I've finished the base difficulty of Nioh 2 and decided to put it down for a very long time. Now that I'm coming back to it, these videos help a lot for refreshing all the mechanics in the game. I'm just lucky that the muscle memory for my fist combos are still well intact.

You can transfer inheritable abilities from soul cores onto weapons when you soul match. You can also get the Kodama soul core from the little purple kodamas by dropping any other soul cores for them (it is rng though not guaranteed.)

This is a grade A project and everything was absolutely comprehensible. But I think you should make a for dummies version. This game has a million mechanics I actually learned several just now. No shade intended, this is great👍🏿. But I think using words like white and blue would have more impact😂.

Duuuude, you can select multiple soul cores for fusion with triangle. And when multpile abilities could be transferred, you can switch the transferred one with R2. And if I remember correctly, the Yokai skill tree gives boni when the equipped guardian and soul cores match in color (Not entirely sure there)

I think to remember the game tells you that inheritable effects on soulcores are still active while you have them on your secondary spirit. Testing proves otherwise though, you just get the marked effect from the secondary spirit downscaled to 50% of its value.

Feral: the most useful, the burst counter can be used as a dash [also must be precise in terms of countering] Brute: easier to time with its burst counter Phantom: eh? Range and that's about it

Phantoms burst comes out instantly and is the easiest to spam if you miss the timing, its heavy attack is also a reverse get-over-here so you can stay on the enemy very easily. Also a lot of the magic boosting spirits are phantom type.

I always play phantom and never bothered with the other types as the burst counter I find by far the most solid and reliable. The "living weapon" form is probably sucky but I never use it anyway as I use the Yokai attacks to knock myself out of exhaustion state and other tricky situations. Also I spam ninjitsu and I just learned from this video that phantom enhances anima gain from that.

I use feral and sometimes it just goes off in random directions lmao or goes past the enemy burst attack. But the movement is really useful for emergencies especially when you're out of ki or something

Phantom has the quickest counter. It’s instant. The brutes animation can mess your timing up sometimes although it has the biggest window so that’s why it’s the most user friendly. Once you get good though I would say phantom is the best just because it’s instant. And the ferals dodge can certainly mess you up if your not wanting to move but still counter. They all have a great place in the game.

you can transform a normal weapon into a yokai if you get the corruption status into it. i have two normal weapons that came with corruption and were behaving like a yokai weapon but guess that is extremely rare in the tempering options.

Currently using Elemental Tonfas build centered around putting out mutiple elemental status on enemies and its super fun, def recomend it, and also the new omnyo weapon Switchglaive is also really really cool.

I am at lvl 220 and able use every gaurdian spirit as weapons. Funny thing I find I was basing on odachi for long time tonfa,s never thought bout using em but since u get. Trophy for it I used em my courage is at a puny 18 and I slap already for 5 k hard when they are stunned regular hits are somewhat 100 to 1 k sometimes higher depending at the stance love this game

@@votpavel in Nioh 1 on base release we only had ng+ and dlc added higher ng+ levels each with their own exclusive content. Nioh 2 hasn't gotten ng++ yet (nioh 1 went up to ng+4).

I'd like to point out early soul core fusion isn't useless because you can rank up higher LV core faster you find later in game by feeding the low lv you maxed out

You can feed any low level soul core to higher level ones regardless of whether it’s maxed out or not. I think what you mean is that it will benefit the higher level soul core proportionately more based on how high the rank of the lower level soul core is, correct? Also it’s soul fusion not soul match, probably just going to confuse some people with your post.

I find phantom the easiest BC to use, just do it right before you're hit, the rest require you to position correctly or to know wind up times. Also all the best soul cores are phantom, literally all of them. Edit* that's what human souls are for, i had no idea.

I gone onmyo build and most of the spirits for that are phantom. Also the heavy attack in phantom serves as a gap closer so you can just constantly attack without the enemy getting away from you. Though I suppose that it really matters what your intended spirit bonuses are, if you want something specific you will likely have to give up on choosing a spirit form that you like.

Which perks can be transferred over with soul fusion? That’s the only thing I don’t really understand so far. Maybe cause I don’t have any cores with stuff that can transfer over. I’m only lvl 41 but I do have over 20-30 cores.

@@mrstaroflamar well, I did almost everything there is to be done in the game, so here’s your answer: you can usem them as passive effects soul core. As their value is low, you can equip two good and very strong cores and complete the trio with one of them. Mujina gives you a chance of copying enemy’s enhancements, so if you’re fighting a boss or mini-boss that uses enhancements (boosts), there you go. Mujina can copy that, giving you the same boosts. You can also use them as re-roll payment. Big sudamas can re-roll soul core effects (it has been nerfed). How you do it: you chose a specific core you like, but its effects are not that good, and drop it to big sudama. And then you drop a second core (mujina/biwa). Bid sudama will return the first core and keep the second as a “payment”. You can try that, but like I said, it has been drastically nerfed. There’s a third thing too. Yokai weapons (corruption imbued) can soul-match with soul-cores. Now this will work with every single core. If they have inheritable effects, you can put it on your weapon at the blacksmith. There you go mate. Hope I could have been of any assistance.

Hey, got a question for you regarding soul core special effects on your secondary guardian. As the secondary guardian only gives you one passive ability....do the soul core special effects attuned to it fully active or not at all until you switch to it during a fight? I hope this makes sense 😅

I'm about mid-way to the game, but I'm not a big fan of the rate in which you lose spirit gauge while ATTACKING. Not even Nioh 1 was this bad about it, even with general stat buildup and the use of spirit stones to extend Living Weapon wasn't too demanding either. It makes a super mode like this a little too fleeting and I forget this exists at times. I only know of title buffs and Demonic Ascension among a few other things that prolong the duration, so are there any other perks that exist?

Was never a fan of the fextralife wiki, in my dark souls career it brought me more questions and frustrations than answers. However I'm really loving the video content and kudos to the voice we hear all the time. This is excellent work, especially since the game is so knew and we're all discovering things together. Reminds me of Demon Souls and Dark souls 1 early days.

@@Fextralife My biggest gripe would be the fact that your SEO is more optimised than the actual quality of the content on your pages. Being an early adopter for most games I play, when I google something, you guys are generally at the top of the search results but the actual information on the page was practically worthless or filled with ???. Basically it's important for you to make a page about something like an item even if you don't have the info about it yet. As a result, during early Dark Souls 3, Nioh 1 and Monster hunter it became a recurring gag of empty pages/useless info that I ended up finding about on gamefaqs, another wiki or reddit instead. I remember the comments for Dark Souls 3 especially, all echoing my experience. Now for Nioh 2 things have greatly improved (that's all I've checked since monster hunter world). However there are a few UI issues, for example in your builds page, one would assume you only have videos, but clicking on the build title gives a written version (much quicker to scan for players who have enough points to try different builds), but it's not apparent. A good wiki is a companion who facilitates your life and is easy to navigate, not one who feels like it has its own hidden mechanics like a souls game. I'm only providing constructive criticism here and have nothing but admiration for all the work put into the Nioh 2 wiki and especially the videos, so don't be discouraged by negative comments. You - person in these videos especially, are doing great work.

@@IVANGUARDI I see. I'm the same person that does the wikis, and no I won't get discouraged because I think a lot of this is coming from a misunderstanding of what a wiki is and how it works. We make the pages in advance because they are meant to be edited by the community with information. People don't create pages, in general, but they do edit them - so we provide the platform and page made so that the information can be shared and centralized. If we don't make the pages, then the info will likely never be added, as a wiki is not a one-person project. When I intend to do something solo, it ends up on the blog, like this guide. The wiki's builds page has been updated with further links to make it way more obvious for those who didn't think to click the title. Feedback is appreciated, and we make improvements and changes based on community feedback all the time. It might've been because it wasn't as popular in the past, but I felt like it was generally a pretty bare bones wiki when it came to Dark souls 3 release period or for MHW early days, especially compared to other wikis, that all work the same way. Afaik you cannot stack different attack bonuses anymore. F.e. If you have Attack boost(magic) on your weapon, you cannot have the bonus melee attack x% or damage bonus (familiarity). I tested that with inheritable stats like damage bonus(enemies defeated) on the demon horde weapons bcs they have dmg boost(amrita gauge) and I wasn't able to get any other damage boost skill. But yea it would be pretty useful to know which damage Stat is actually the best. For me I'm using damage boost (magic) bcs my magic Stat is at 99.

Yokai Realm is an already a Buffer ( It does take out your Ki Recovery as a Human/Samurai ) but if u notice under your Health & Ki Bar there's a Red Buff , this is due to the Fact that you're a Half Yokai & half Samurai/Human Bloodline... hence why any Yokai Realms would buff up your Attacks if your using Yokai Skills & even Yokai Shift itself 🤣😅 ( But i think it drains alil bit more Anima , and Amrita Gauge im not certain ) if your inside the Yokai/Dark Realm , when u keep using Yokai Skills or Yokai Shift inside the Realm

The only thing I disagree with is stopping soul fusion once you're maxed out. Soul Cores keep dropping with higher stats as you progress the game.

Yes any Hatchet Hold 🔺️ ( in any Stance ) means Projectile/Ranged 👌🏼... This is clearly shown because of the Damage Difference between Hatchets Melee hits & Hatchet Throws , hope this helps 👍🏼..... I'm specifically running a Switchglaive ( Main ) and Dual Hatchets ( Off-Main ) as my build... i use Brute Form Guardian Spirits as 1st , and Secondary i use Phantom Guardian Spirits 👌🏼 *Keep in mind that both Brute Form & Phantom Form are both having the Anti-Stagger when u transform into a Yokai shift* ( only the Feral Form has a weak Body , and gets staggered by getting Hit against Enemies/Yokais ) Enjoy 🔥

Amrita Build is already a thing yes... Yokai Shift Build is kinda tricky , since All soul Cores give you Attack & Defense Values ( Those number values on each soul core , also contribute to Yokai Shifts Attacks & Defense Values ) But however , some End Game Soul Cores like Magatsu Warriors , Gozuki Core & Mezuki Cores ( Give you Bonuses like "Yokai shift Attack +33" or Gozuki gives "Yokai Shift Defense +23" ) those values they give is also considered the same value of each Soul Cores... this means you could have a Heavy Defensed Yokai Shift or Heavy Attack Yokai Shift... that's pretty much it 😅 but Amrita Build there is of course ( there are Talismans that can Buff up your Amrita Gauge Rating , and also Bonus effects )... However , thro the DLC hopefully they drop a Yokai Shift Builds in the Future

You increase the passive bonus. Say you get have a +4.2 Poison resistance @ Rank 2, Rank 3 will increase it to 4.3,

that's how you progress in NG+, combine two of the same Green Item with the same (+X), you get +1, so +2 & +2 gets you +3, and so on. +0 & +0 = +1 +1 & +1 = +2 etc.

I hate the Brute Burst Counter, preferring the Feral by quite a ways. But with a poison build I really like using the snake Guardian Spirit (which is a Brute). So I'm kind of stuck with it for now. Hopefully a Feral one will come along that I can maximize my poisons with eventually. I'm level 65 and haven't seen one yet.

This is one aspect I truly hate about the game, clogging up your inventory with hundreds of soul cores, you need to pick them up to level your stats, but then you cannot just delete them randomly with resting rites, as you will screw yourself over. So you need to actually sift through all these details of the soul cores when you really just want to sit on the couch and play. This is also the case with armor and weapons collection (also bad) BUT there you don't have to bother with soul fusions and you can just feed all non-purple equipment to the shrine to level up faster. What is also sucky is the complicated way to attune soul cores as the video in your iventory isn't always clear which ability you are going to override with OR which ability you are going to override. And then there is the confusing issue of soul fusion with your old soul core or picking up a higher level one of the same variety and playing on with that.

Make sure that you have unlocked the ability to do that first. You unlock it after beating a certain boss. If you have, try binding it to 2 buttons instead of one. Also, make sure you have a second spirit equipped at a shrine.

Girlfriend of a stressed boyfriend here. He doesn’t even know I’m commenting. How does he activate the spirit animal and use the special power thing on PlayStation? He did it once by accident and can’t figure it out. He has the wolf one. And he is losing his mind trying to defeat the water boss thing. The big water blob that turns yellow inside. Dude have you seen the completely unkillable yokai shift build? You literally nullify 100% damage and virtually can't run out of gauge if you just attack once every 10 seconds.
