funfact, the first tenkaichi game was repurposing music from previous budokai games. because the original japanese DBZ tenkaichi games (named Sparking, Sparking neo and Sparking meteor) are all using anime music, so the english version had to come up with something else to change that, they just reuposed budokai OST for the first one, but they made original music for BT2 and BT3, which is pretty cool

One thing that wasn't mentioned but I appreciated in these games is the sequels started replacing generic moves with character specific ones. I remember in T1 even some main character would have "Full Power Energy Blast" or something that was a generic beam attack with no dialogue. Sequels added new moves and even added some voice lines for characters to call out attack names

Day/Evening/Night variations is a thing I wish more DBZ games would do with their maps. Tied to this, the developers showed great attention to detail with Great Ape transformations because characters like Raditz and Kid Goku need to look at the moon in a night time map while Vegeta and Turles can transform anywhere by creating artificial moonlight.

Thanks for listening to my recommendation, these games to me are definitely the magnum opus of Dragonball games and I don't think there's a gameplay formula that fits Dragonball more. It's a shame they stopped using it because they where so close to perfecting it with the Raging Blast games. The scenarios behind many of the Ultimate Battle Z towers were nice too, such as Saiyan Blood, Giants, Transformation, etc. As an experience, I'd also say Tenkaichi 2 was more rewarding in unlocking characters with things such as long story progression or Z Item Fusion, whereas the majority of characters are already unlocked at the start of the game in BT3.

Yeah same here. As someone who enjoys story mode in games, Tenkaichi 2 is so much more satisfying than 3's story mode. Like I gotta disagree with Niosai that Tenkaichi 3 had the best story mode because sure there was cut ins and animation cutscenes but the story was severely lacking. It skips so many battles from each saga that I was disappointed at how quickly I finished the story mode of that game. The Cell Saga especially was insane at the amount of fights it skips over.

Like for example how BT3 removed the whole Move Cancelling system the first 2 had, or how the entire combo system from BT1 changed in BT2, stuff like that. Doesn't even need to go too much in-depth. Still, content-wise this has been a great showcase

Yeah I think the uploader is just a boomer who struggles to put his two brain cells to good use if he thinks a simple menu change makes bt3's story mode, which in itself just a summary of events ,better then the fully fledged campaign of bt2. Like all you do in bt3 is fight a while and press r3 for a boring cutscene.

As a kid I loved BT2's OST way more than BT3 and thought BT3 was bland but now I actually value them mostly the same. There's a lot of tracks in BT3 I didn't really appreciate before but that being said I'd probably still put BT2's OST just a bit higher.

Mid match transformations were one of my favorite parts of 2 and 3. Me and my friends had a rule were we always had to start as the character's base form and work our way up throughout the match. Our fights felt super dramatic that way.

The battle 100 in BT3 from the disc fusion has you battle literally 100 characters in a row in a single map with a single character. You heal 1 health bar for every character beaten. The rewards weren't really worth the 2 hour grind tho.

Some interesting points you missed here concerning a gameplay mechanic. So you have these rush type moves that lock onto a character, in tenkaichi you can't adjust the trajectory you move so you get hit by beam attacks but in the later games you can move while using it which adds some extra strategy. You can even slightly adjust your beams when firing which ar some neat aspects that were added.

In BT3 Story mode, you could make your own alternate ending by finishing the story with a different character you're playing that wasn't supposed win, finishing off the opponent early on then intended, or winning without the player from transforming or the opponent.

Great retrospective on the games! One thing I wanted to point out that I don't think was mentioned; difference between the tournaments. Obviously, World Tournament has ringouts. Hercule and Cell Games don't so you have to defeat your opponent all the way through. Cell games is also a survival tournament; your health doesn't fully recover between matches so you have to consider that when competing

The fighting mechanics were totally BOSS in this game 4 way blocks against charged attacks during combos was epic to me!! It's trim down is why I didn't give BT3 a longer run although BT3's roster was super impressive. Budokai Tenkaichi 2 started the fusion mechanic during tag battles as well I don't think you ran through that.

I really appreciate these videos. As a recent Dragon Ball fan, I never quite knew the difference between Budokai and Budokai Tenkaichi. Now I see that Budokai is more like a 2D standard fighter while Tenkaichi is a 3D arena fighter. Very cool. Glad to finally understand that difference. Based off of your comments, it seems like Tenkaichi 3 is overall the best of this bunch, but it might be worth it to get Tenkaichi 2 as well for its unique content. Conversely, for Budokai it's basically just Budokai 3 that's overall the best. Does that seem accurate to you?

Sweet. Wish more people would do retrospectives on this series If I could make a suggestion for a single-game video, maybe consider One Piece: Burning Blood. It was developed by the same team who does the Tenkaichi/Raging Blast games, along with the recent slew of Jump fighters. As far as I can tell, this team has been around as a developer within Spike years before they merged with Chunsoft

It would be great to see it get more popularity, though it probably wouldn't hit the wider fighting game mainstream compared to something like FighterZ due to the obvious lack in balance with some characters, unless there were major changes made to either general or online mechanics. With that tweak though, it could become an incredibly fun and strategic experience, as shown with the slightly modded version on the channel DBZ League. Sad that, due to the rights to the games essentially being in stasis due to the company behind it now being defunct, we'll most likely never see any remake or re-release.

BT1 is definitely the weakest of this series and it hasn’t aged well, but the foundation was always there and the next 2 games improved dramatically over its predecessor. Fights were faster, combos were expanded greatly, and the roster sizes were ridiculous!
