This video talks about the use of NIPT/NIPS testing, in the event of a vanishing twin during pregnancy. We will talk about multiple gestation pregnancies. What can be expected of NIPT, before the vanishing twin event and how safe the negative NIPT test results are for the surviving baby after the vanishing twin event.
If you would like to know about NIPT please come to one of our events : www.eventbrite.ca/o/merogenom...

For context, the study cited states that Vanishing Twin Syndrome, especially before 12 weeks gestation, could likely be due to chromosomal aneuploidy but typical invasive techniques pose some risk to the surviving fetus if parents wanted to rule this out. So what this video says about NIPT testing is that (Good news!) in a very recent study (Jan 2021) NIPT testing was clinically validated by a 0% False negative rate(!) and this is very good news especially because if you already had a VTS then you would want to be extra careful for the surviving fetus' health Thus NIPT has been clinically validated and could be seen as the best (Based on 0%NFR) and safest option for genetic counselling in VTS syndrome pregnancies. Great stuff, Dr. Raszek !

Wow, can't believe you actually look at the study! But this is great because more than one set of eyes actually looked at this and see that potential value of NIPT/NIPS after VTS to see if surviving fetus could be ok. Obviously we hope this will be of great help to many pregnant moms to be and their supporting healthcare professionals.

Hi! If a NIPT result revealed 1-2 male babies and there was a vanishing twin, would that also be unreliable for determining the surviving baby’s sex if the sample was taken within 8 weeks of both twins being there? Thanks

Hello Dr, I’m currently going through it now. I did the genetic test twice and came back inadequate. I have a vanishing twin. So, the doctor is sending me to a specialist to do the amniocentesis. Dr said it’s a possibility is because of the vanishing twin. I’m a bit nervous about the health of the child but I’m assuming this gets preformed many times. I did the genetic test at 11 weeks and 12 weeks. Thank you for the information.

Good luck with the tests! You should have shown this video to your doctor so you would have been treated free weeks later. And from everything I have read in published scientific literature is that negative impact of the vanishing twin on the surviving twin is very small. Your doctor is just being super cautious and thorough and your result is simply due to contamination from vanishing twin. I'll be sending good vibes for a beautiful healthy baby your way!!!

Thanks for sharing your story. I am going through the exact same situation (NIPT at 12 weeks) and waiting for the results. Did your results come negative after the amniocentesis? Hoping everything was totally fine. All the best.

@@mazzaron19 good luck with your results but as per video, if results are not negative, there will be high likelihood that positive results could be inaccurate and you can wait to redo the NIPT later on to confirm, or consider invasive diagnostic testing option. All the best to you!

Hello thank you for this video ❤just a question: I had NIPT test in wich everything is ok, so negative, but they can’t tell me the sex because the dna of the vanishing twin is still in my blood. For this I have to repeat in 1 month. But the question is: Can I trust this negative results even if the dna of the vanishing twin is still around? Thank you 🙏🏻
@Merogenomics
@Merogenomics Жыл бұрын
I would think yes, because if the vanishing twin had chromosomal imbalance, you would be spotting it. So the fact that you are not seeing it, with the DNA from both the growing baby and the vanishing twin, it means that chromosomes are all in balance as they should be (for both). The test result still always have a small chance of being wrong because technically you are not looking at the DNA of the baby but the DNA of the placenta, but to have normal placenta and affected baby is exceedingly rare from my understanding. But overall, I would say this is positive and encouraging news and obviously wishing you a great delivery experience!!!

Mine is an IVF pregnancy. I had this VTS and my test came positive for sex chromosome abnormality. Rest all my syndrome tests came negative. Even double marker is negative. Nt scan is also negative. So, doctor I want to ask is it because of VTS my blood is showing sex chromosome abnormality?? Plz reply.

Sorry, just seeing this as it's hard to get through all the different comments these days. But the answer is possibly yes depending on when your test was done. As suggested in the video, you could wait and repeat the non-invasive prenatal screening once the VT genetic content is no longer expected to be circulating in your blood. But if your blood test was not NIPS, remember, other blood tests can be quite inaccurate in comparison (like around 5% false positive rate but this is from memory, so please confirm). Wishing you the best!

What about the gender results? I had a vanishing twin, did the NIPT test about 7 weeks after baby vanished, and found out that there were no chromosonal issues. (GREAT!) But also was told the baby is a boy. What is the likelihood that this is actually the case? THANKS!
@Merogenomics
@Merogenomics Жыл бұрын
Sorry, just seeing this. I think this would depend on the test (because some tests only look at few chromosomes as opposed to all chromosomes) but in order to call the boy gender, Y chromosome had to be detected and statistical analysis would inform if there are extra X chromosomes (if the result was confounded by the vanishing twin genetic material). Are you asking to determine the accuracy of the procedure to know what gender to expect or is it because you have reasons to suspect that you were not provided accurate information?
@Narges_K
@Narges_K Жыл бұрын
@@Merogenomics Thanks so much for replying! I wrote this comment because I suspect that they weren't necessarily looking at the results from a vanishing twin 'perspective'. Let me explain: They found out about the vanishing twin during my 13 week echo, two hours before the NIPT test. The test was requested with the mention of only one baby. So I was wondering if the results of a NIPT test reflect my case anyway even without them actually looking out for the results in a vanishing twin case.
@Narges_K
@Narges_K Жыл бұрын
Basically, would they have had to do the testing procedure differently to get an accurate information on the gender of my baby? Or would this have shown up in the test results anyway and does the procedure remain the same?

Thank you for this video! It helped ease my nerves a little. I am going to be tested around 15 weeks, baby b stopped developing at 6 weeks so I am hoping that my results come back negative and I can stop worrying about baby a. I am wondering though, if the test is negative for aneuplodies and we can rely on that- can we still rely on the sex determination? Or could that still be affected by the vanishing twin?
@Merogenomics
@Merogenomics 2 жыл бұрын
Correct, you should be in the clear in the same fashion as for all other chromosomes. Of course there is never a guarantee that the genetic material from the vanishing twin will indeed be fully gone, but that study suggested that in their experience, it always was, so you ought to be getting a clear result. All the best and obviously wishing you a healthy beautiful baby!!!
