Prenatal testing can provide valuable information for anyone with a baby on the way. However, a recent report suggests that for some syndromes, these tests are wrong a majority of the time. It’s not because the tests are “bad”, though, it’s because the syndromes they test for are so rare.

The doctors insisted to my husband's mother that he was going to be born with severe birth defects and tried to convince her that she should abort the pregnancy. He came out perfectly fine

One of our Dr's told us our son had a very rare genetic condition based on ultrasound She told us with this condition he won't survive to birth or longer than minutes after. She scheduled an appt for termination without consent. We got a second opinion and although he does have a rare genetic condition it wasn't the one she told us. He didn't have half of the issues she told us he did. He will be 4 next week and he's thriving.

I’m so relieved to have found this video. My Wife and I are currently going through this, and it really is terrifying the way they explain the results. We were told 79% our Baby has D.S . This is our first pregnancy and to hear news like that was devastating to say the least. The doctors are trying to push for Amniocentesis but we are refusing. It’s not worth the risk especially if the Baby is healthy and there tests are wrong. Part of us wish we never did the test in the first place. Just trying to stay Positive!

Aminocentesis is required after NIPT. You should have done the NIPT first and if that was negative then that’s it. Also I found this information after talking to couple of doctors in the family. Our family doctor didn’t say this. So yes the way the information and advice is presented is completely BS lol

Did you and your wife go a different route to determine whether or not your baby had DS? Im not against the idea of the amniocentesis testing but I’m also very aware of the risks. I was told we would get a more detail ultrasound first before any testing so I’m staying hopeful everything clears with just that.

I had a false negative. And I’m so glad I did. My child is full of the most unconditional love and it’s like living with a real life angel. Who has some devilish behaviours.. but it’s a small price to pay to know her this lifetime. People with Down syndrome deserve to live. People without Down syndrome don’t always deserve the love they bring.

This highlights the importance of patient education. It's all too common that patients will get tests they don't fully understand, and if doctors don't explain them adequately the patients can reach conclusions which cause unnecessary anxiety or lead to further unnecessary tests or treatments.

Well just do the same test multiple times in a row instead if there is too much false positive. Also helps false negatives The informed patient has to be pay multiple time with a long delay to be sure they can avort. But ofc the amerain medical system do not want that at all cost.
@m136dalie
@m136dalie 2 жыл бұрын
The purpose of the test is screening, performing it multiple times still won't guarantee whether the foetus has the syndrome. This is why mothers need to decide if they want a diagnostic test like CVS or amniocentesis, but as the video states there are costs and risks associated with these too.
@SpySappingMyKeyboard
@SpySappingMyKeyboard 2 жыл бұрын
You can only reduce the probability if the tests are independent. The US system would love the excuse to charge for the same thing multiple times, so the fact they don't is an indicator that it wouldn't work.

They only allow it to be done once. I went through this and tried getting retested and they dont allow it or theres no coverage and it would be around $10,000 vs the $200 I originally paid.

This is why I point blank refused to have any prenatal screening with my daughter. If she had any conditions it would likely turn up in an ultrasound and if not, I rather deal with it than have a doctor try to convince me to end the pregnancy. Let's be real, prenatal testings primary goal is eugenics, trying to kill disabled children before they are born, not preparing parents. If it was about preparing parents, I wouldn't hear so many first hand accounts of doctors pushing for mothers to murder their healthy baby because a test came back positive (also disabled does not always equal not healthy!)

Good point, is there another standard statistical number that could be used to highlight this? Here is an example I thought of that I call "weighted S/S" =(pC*pTP)/((1-pC)*PFP). Where pC=probability of the Condition, pTP=probability of the True Positive, pFP=probability of the False Positive. That is for a population, "weighted S/S" = # people that had condition and tested positive / # people that did no have the condition and tested positive Ex: For you proposed hypothetical "weighted S/S" =((75/100)*(20/80000))/((0.5/100)*((80000-20)/80000))=0.04 - Pretty low Ex2: Say you have flue symptoms and you think that the chance you have COID is 50/50 and you want to know if you should take the MedSam Home COVID test (pTP=55%, PFP=3%) "weighted S/S" =((55/100)*(50/100))/((3/100)*(50/100))=18.3!!! Much Higher - YES Any other ideas? Is there a similar standard statistical number that yields this or a similar distinction?
